"I went to look at Ivy Lodge. I was a little bit concerned about the fact that many of the rooms shared a bath and a somewhat inadequate kitchen area. The rooms were very small. The director was very committed to his program. I didn't see any evidence of residents going into the community, to the movies, or shopping, or playing, which was a concern to me. I thought the dining room lacked décor. It was not appealing."

"I toured the Pine Ridge Family Type Home for Adults. It just seems small for the inside and you can't put too many people in there because it would be crowded. We sat in her dining room and we were talking and it's a house. So that's how the whole place is. It's very comforting because it's a home. They made it very homey and comforting. It's better than going to a nursing home. The owner was very nice. I didn't get to talk to her about the activities because, like almost immediately, I could see that it wasn't for my mom. She was in a wheelchair and also, I told her that eventually my mom was going to run out of money and she was going to go on Medicaid, and she said they don't take Medicaid. The facility looked very clean."

"I went to Vanduzer Family Type Home for Adults in Walden. It's a very loving, caring family, very dedicated and devoted to their members. It's a very comfortable, warm environment, and they work together as a family unit to take care of the needs of each individual. The dining area is very home-like. There is a kitchenette attached to the dining room. The mother of the house cooks, and she makes very healthy food. Her husband does a lot of research, and they provide food that is healthy for their people. It's a home, so they have a beautiful backyard where people can go sit outside and enjoy the country-type setting. They also have permission to go on activities with family members freely. If there's a family member who has a pet, they're allowed to bring the pet to the room of the individual. They gave me a sample of something, and I was like, "What is this? You don't have to feed me." They said, "If you had come a little earlier, we would have given you lunch." It was a dessert, and it was a chocolate cheesecake. There was absolutely no sugar in it. It was gluten-free. I never would have guessed it was gluten-free. Their food is phenomenal."

"Golden Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was very clean, but it was institutional looking. There was no outdoor area, but there were a few hard benches in front. It's enormous and had this very dark brick. When you go inside, it was very modern with very high ceilings. It's inviting. It was well-kept and the woman that met me was very professional and caring. I was impressed with the staff. She was very accommodating, very informed, and very, very polite."

"The Landing Of Poughkeepsie was absolutely perfect, but I couldn't afford it. The rooms were adequate. They thought of every little thing. I couldn't conceive of one thing they hadn't covered in that establishment. I wish I could afford to live there, but I can't. They have culinary trained chef. The dining room is open 12 hours a day for any meal at any time. To me, it was the most wonderful place. Everyone that I talked to was excellent. The lady at the reception desk and the fellow who gave us the tour were very knowledgeable and very caring. The staff I saw as we walked through was excellent as well. I didn't eat there but they gave us a going away package of galettes that would melt in your mouth and were wonderful. This place was like heaven to me. It's top notch. They showed a calendar of their activities which had four to six every single day throughout the month."
