Independent Living Communities in Grass Valley, CA

"Bret Harte is an old residential building run by a family and they all seem like very warm and caring people. It's in the same neighbourhood as where my mother is living. The people that we met there all seemed to be pretty happy with the services. They invited us for lunch and I liked the food. They have entertainment on Fridays; they run movies a couple of times a week. They also have exercise classes and Bible study classes. It's not a lot but it seems reasonable. "

"I lived in Nevada Senior Apartments. The rooms are big, nice, and spacious. Sometimes we had activities like game nights and cards, and we celebrated birthdays once a month. The staff is very good. "

"The facility is bright and clean, and there are always helpful staff around. The individual apartment where my friend lives is small, but plenty of space for her. I really like that each apartment has it's own kitchen, so the residents can choose if they feel up to preparing a meal or would rather eat in the communal dining room. The facility also offers bus transportation to local shops and events, which makes the residents feel more freedom than if they had to come up with their own way of getting around. All of the people I have met there, residents and staff seem happy and comfortable. My friend who lives there likes it and the only negative I can think of is that they did not allow her to bring her cat with her, although this may have been a personal choice rather than a facility rule, I'm not sure. "

"The Summerset Lincoln is gorgeous and nice. It's only a year old and just a beautiful facility. We looked at both their independent and assisted living. From what I saw, they had a huge number of activities. Everything from bocce ball, music, game rooms, to pool table and tennis. They even had a kitchen where family members could come in and cook and have a big family dinner. They had a spa room with a bathtub. They had a puzzle room, card games, a library, and computer stuff. They also had a nice little cafe area where you could go get tea, coffee, and water throughout the day. They had areas where you could just go, sit and read. There is not much you wouldn't want there, that's for sure. The only thing that I didn't see was a pool but it was nice. Their facilities are beautiful. The only thing to complain about was just that the closets were just way too small for anybody, especially for independent living. It didn't have adequate space. Nobody wants their suitcase on top of their kitchen cabinets and I don't know if they have an extra storage locker somewhere but that's just something that I would think would be handy so people could put large items to store like suitcases and some other things."

"Sun City Lincoln Hills was lovely. It's a huge area with lots of homes but it's very self contained. Residents can drive a golf cart to doctors' appointments, to banks, and to grocery shopping. Their dining areas and restaurants looked perfect."

"I looked at The Pines, A Merrill Gardens Community in Rocklin which I liked but they have a waiting list. I'm looking for independent living at the moment, but I need the possibility of having to move into assisted care at some later date and they do it right at the same place in the same room. You just move over to the other type of care paying for the services that you use. It has nice accommodations inside and the building looks nice to me. I have a very strange eating schedule and their dining is from 7 to 7 or something like that so basically, no hours so that I can more closely meet my needs. In most of the other places, someone will serve breakfast from point A to point B, then lunch and dinner so you have prescribed times that you have to be there. I have to take certain medications that I can't eat or have any other medications for an hour afterward. Another one I have 3 hours before and three hours after so that's important for me. The person who assisted me was very knowledgeable, showed me around the place, and was very friendly and open. I had lunch there and it was very good. They're very accommodating that way. There's an open kitchen for 12 hours. We checked the calendar of activities and they have different things going on that seem quite interesting. It's a very nice place that's why they have a waiting list to get in."
