The beach and its boardwalk create a scenic destination for seniors at Virginia Beach. Retirees who enjoy dining out will find many options on the boardwalk, including a wide selection of local seafood restaurants. For seniors who enjoy the outdoors, First Landing State Park has thousands of acres available for swimming, fishing or picnicking. Seniors can also take in the sights at The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center at Virginia Beach, with animals, exhibits, dining and even boat tours for sightseeing.

People over 65 make up 12.7 percent of the population at Virginia Beach. Seniors enjoy summer temperatures in the 80s, and mild winters with an average temperature of 52 degrees. Seniors who enjoy shopping and movies can find both at the Lynnhaven Mall, where there are over 120 retail shops and an 18-screen AMC theater.

Virginia Beach provides a wide selection of home care agencies. The average cost for housekeeping assistance and home health care is the same at $19 per hour. That’s less than the national average of $21 for home assistance and $22 for health aides. Seniors can expect to pay about $3,600 per month for each type of care, according to Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey 2019.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Virginia Beach area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
