According to Genworth Financial’s 2019 Cost of Care Survey, seniors here pay an average of $4,385 monthly for homemaker services and $4,767 monthly for home health aide services, which include limited medical support. Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Westchester County:

RideConnect

RideConnect, a Family Services of Westchester initiative, provides free transportation services to residents aged 60 and over throughout Westchester and southern Putnam Counties. Volunteers take seniors to medical appointments, shopping and other excursions. This program also offers The Weekly Shopper, a free 11-person bus service transporting residents on weekly or semiweekly shopping trips. RideConnect provides information on other transportation providers, including volunteer organizations, discounted taxi services and public bus and train schedules. 

DOROT

Federally and state-funded DOROT provides creative in-home programs for Westchester County seniors aged 60 and older. DOROT matches volunteers with participants based on geographic proximity and shared interests for weekly or monthly visits. Three times a year, nearly 100 seniors receive special holiday packages and hour-long visits from volunteers. This program also offers Shabbat Shalom at Home four times a year. Other interactive opportunities include:

Westchester County’s volunteer-run Livable Communities has nine regional sites and aims to help seniors aged 55 and older remain independent and engaged. This program features award-winning supports, such as caregiver coaching and health management resources. Its Care Circles of Westchester initiative empowers caregivers to coordinate services not provided by public funds, including:

  • Laundry assistance
  • Companionship

Weatherization Referral Assistance Program (WRAP)

Through Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services, WRAP provides up to $5,000 per household to help needy seniors aged 60 and older make their homes more energy-efficient. Energy-related repairs include:

  • Programmable thermostats
  • Repair or replacement of hot water tanks, outside doors and broken storm windows in heated areas of the home
  • Air-sealing repairs to walls and floors
  • Adding insulation to walls, ceilings and attics

Westchester County’s Nutrition Program brings meals to area residents aged 60 and older. Approved nutrition centers distribute hot meals five or more days each week, and eligible homebound seniors receive meals at home. Participants must register in advance, and a small donation is requested. In addition to hot lunches, seniors have access to nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy.
