"We are working with STEPS Home Care for two months now. They're excellent. I never had any problems with the caregivers. They come on time, they're very cooperative, and they're very good with my wife. So far, so good. They help my wife with showering, they walk with her, they do small chores in the house, and they help change her diapers. They were the first to call. They're very cooperative and very nice. Scheduling and billing are excellent."

"Bryan, the leader of this company, is one of the most diligent people I have ever had the fortune to work with. As the owner of this company, he takes his clients’ needs very seriously and does his utmost to match his staff with client needs. He is a fabulous communicator and always gives prompt responses to queries and any problems that might arise. He first provided home care for my mom, it when my mom went into assisted living we terminated his services. Just a few weeks ago, my mom went from her assisted living facility into the hospital. After a week in rehab, I had two days to arrange supplemental care for my Mom. I called Bryan and he put the whole thing together with time to spare. In my opinion this was an amazing feat and I will always appreciate the effort Bryan put into this. If my Mom ever needs more help, you can be sure I’ll call Collaborative Home Care first!"

"We used Senior Helpers in Southwest Connecticut for just two weeks. We only needed somebody to help bathe my son because he could not get into the tub or a shower. So, he was getting just a sponge bath. That's all because he feeds himself, I cook, and I do everything. I didn't need any help with housework or shopping or anything like that. I just needed somebody to give him a sponge bath, and they were very good. I just got billed after two weeks. The scheduling was fine. I would recommend them. The person I had was on time. She helped me as much as I needed help. I just got her for three hours, which was more than enough, because what I just needed was somebody for one hour."

"We used Lean On Me Home Care INC for my husband. They were very professional, and caring, and they were also very expedient. So they met the need when I needed it. If you need services right away, if you need someone professional, that's caring, and provides the services you need, that's the care service for you. They were local, so it wasn't far away for them to travel to get here, which was very helpful and they were always here on time."

He was interesting and provided great conversation for my Uncle and was so helpful in the house. It was great to have a concerned companion looking over him. Home Instead was extremely cooperative and accommodating in varying the schedule as needed. The staff would bend over backwards to make things work and the communication was excellent. "We hired a young lady from Synergy HomeCare for about an eight-hour span. She helped my grandmother around the house and helped her get ready for a nap and just made sure that she was generally safe in everything that she was doing. She was very good, showed up on time, and was very attentive to her. My event was running a little bit late and she even offered to stay an extra hour, which was very helpful. Everything went very well."

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Westchester County:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| RideConnect | (914) 242-7433 | 75 Route 35, Suite 6S-5, Katonah, NY 10536 | RideConnect, a Family Services of Westchester initiative, provides free transportation services to residents aged 60 and over throughout Westchester and southern Putnam Counties. Volunteers take seniors to medical appointments, shopping and other excursions. This program also offers The Weekly Shopper, a free 11-person bus service transporting residents on weekly or semiweekly shopping trips. RideConnect provides information on other transportation providers, including volunteer organizations, discounted taxi services and public bus and train schedules. |
| DOROT | (212) 769-2850 | 171 W 85th St., New York, NY 10024 | Federally and state-funded DOROT provides creative in-home programs for Westchester County seniors aged 60 and older. DOROT matches volunteers with participants based on geographic proximity and shared interests for weekly or monthly visits. Three times a year, nearly 100 seniors receive special holiday packages and hour-long visits from volunteers. This program also offers Shabbat Shalom at Home four times a year. Other interactive opportunities include: |
| Livable Communities | (914) 995-2000 | 148 Martine Ave., White Plains, NY 10601 | Westchester County’s volunteer-run Livable Communities has nine regional sites and aims to help seniors aged 55 and older remain independent and engaged. This program features award-winning supports, such as caregiver coaching and health management resources. Its Care Circles of Westchester initiative empowers caregivers to coordinate services not provided by public funds, including: |
| Weatherization Referral Assistance Program (WRAP) | (914) 813-6300 | 148 Martine Ave., White Plains, NY 10601 | Through Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services, WRAP provides up to $5,000 per household to help needy seniors aged 60 and older make their homes more energy-efficient. Energy-related repairs include: |
| Nutrition Program | (914) 995-2000 | 148 Martine Ave., White Plains, NY 10601 | Westchester County’s Nutrition Program brings meals to area residents aged 60 and older. Approved nutrition centers distribute hot meals five or more days each week, and eligible homebound seniors receive meals at home. Participants must register in advance, and a small donation is requested. In addition to hot lunches, seniors have access to nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
