Breezy Point is a coastal enclave in the Queens borough of New York City. The community is privately run by the Breezy Point Cooperative. Each resident owns their own home, and they pay dues into the cooperative. The collected dues fund the maintenance, security and community-related costs that keep the district less urbanized and more private.

For those that love the outdoors, Breezy Point has plenty of recreation options. At the southern tip of the community is the Gateway National Recreation Area, which is popular with the area’s many seniors (about one-sixth of the area’s population) who stroll on the beach, observe wildlife or spend time boating. With ready access to New York’s city services and the small-town feel of the neighborhood, it’s no wonder that many of Breezy Point’s seniors choose to retire and call this close-knit community home.

Many of Breezy Point’s retirees choose to remain here to age in place and be surrounded by friends and family. Breezy Point is home to several quality home health and care agencies with services that average $24-$25 per hour. This is according to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey, which lists the national average at $21 per hour for in-home care and $22 per hour for home health care. For seniors in Breezy Point, the average monthly cost for in-home care or home healthcare ranges between $4,576 and $4,767.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Breezy Point, so data for the closest city, New York City, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Breezy Point area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Breezy Point Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Breezy Point:

The Aging in New York Fund

Address: 2 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10007
Phone: (212) 602-4455

This organization works closely with the Meals on Wheels program for the New York City metro area. While the organization focuses on delivering hot, nutritious meals and friendly companionship to seniors in need, there are several other missions the agency advocates: connecting leaders to the New York public health system, helping the elderly improve their oral health, and reducing the social isolation that many seniors feel.

Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC)

Address: New York State Department of Health, Corning Tower, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12237
Phone: (866) 881-2809

EPIC is a statewide program aimed at helping reduce the out-of-pocket costs of prescription medications for New York seniors. The program is income-based and available to all seniors covered under Medicare Part D. Once the individual’s deductible is met, the program provides secondary coverage.

Astoria Salvation Army

Address: 45-18 Broadway, Astoria, NY 11103
Phone: (718) 721-9046

This branch of the New York Salvation Army has both a thrift store and a food pantry. They provide caseworkers to help Breezy Point seniors gain access to certain Salvation Army services such as rent and utility emergency bill payments and homeless placement assistance. Free hygiene supplies and food are provided for those in dire need. Benefits are based on income, and most services are from volunteers.

Margert Community Corporation

Address: 325 Beach 37th St., Far Rockaway, NY 11691
Phone: (718) 471-3724

This organization works in conjunction with the New York RESTORE program, a housing repair and home modification program for seniors. It offers funds to repair hazardous areas of the home or make housing more accessible for seniors with mobility problems. The program is income-based and serves all eligible residents of Queens County. Funds are used to fix severe housing deficiencies, in accordance with local safety standards, and include winterization.

LiveOn – NYC

Address: 49 W 45th St. 7th Floor, New York, NY 10036
Phone: (212) 398-6565

LiveOn advocates for the rights of senior citizens in the New York metro area. It works directly with seniors who choose to age in place in their communities, providing workshops to help them retain their independence. They provide case managers who work to connect seniors with helpful area services and host events that provide seniors with opportunities for socialization.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
