Sacramento is the capital city of California, and it sits in the center of a sprawling urban and suburban zone between two rivers: the Sacramento and the American. Home to 508,000 people, over 12% of Sacramento’s residents are seniors aged 65 and over. The entire region has a mild Mediterranean  climate, which gets just 18.5 inches of rain a year. This helps keep Sacramento one of the most heavily forested cities in the world, and seniors who enjoy outdoor walks and other activities are almost always within range of a grove of shade trees. Several local hospitals, such as Sutter General Hospital, provide superb age-related medicine from dedicated senior health departments.

Homemaker services and home healthcare in Sacramento both cost $5,434 a month, according to the 2019 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. This is significantly higher than the average monthly cost of similar services nationwide. Nationally, homemaker services cost an average of $4,290 a month, while home health assistance costs around $4,385. On an hourly scale, this means that Sacramento seniors pay an average of $28.50 an hour for both services, while nationwide, homemaker help is $22.50, and home healthcare runs $23 an hour.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Sacramento area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Sacramento Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Sacramento:

Home Modification and Safety Repairs – Seniors First

Address: 12183 Locksley Lane, Suite #205, Auburn, CA 95602
Phone: (530) 889-9500 ext. 205

Seniors in the Sacramento area can get assistance with weatherizing and making minor modifications to their homes through the Home Modification and Safety Repairs project, which is administered by the local nonprofit Seniors First in Auburn. Seniors who meet the project’s income and asset restrictions can use funds to improve their home’s energy efficiency, mobility access and basic safety. The project pays for licensed local contractors to install wheelchair ramps, grab bars in bathrooms and other fall-risk areas and to upgrade or install new insulation.

Project Go

Address: 801 Vernon Street, Roseville, CA 95678
Phone: (916) 782-3443

Seniors in Sacramento and Placer counties can sign up for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) through the local nonprofit Project Go. LIHEAP is limited to seniors who are responsible for their homes’ energy bills, but who earn less than the program’s maximum income threshold. Assistance may reduce home heating and cooling costs by up to 30%. Seniors may have to provide proof of residence and income during the sign-up process.

Salvation Army of Auburn

Address: 286 Sutter Street, Auburn, CA 95603
Phone: (530) 889-3990

Seniors who are facing eviction or the disconnection of their utilities may be able to get one-time emergency assistance through the Salvation Army of Auburn. Emergency assistance may be requested on an as-needed basis, without prior applications or interviews, and interventions are made with SMUD, PG&E and property owners immediately. Verification of income and address may be requested after payment arrangements have been made, but before funds are paid.

Meals on Wheels – Seniors First

Address: 12183 Locksley Lane, Suite #205, Auburn, CA 95602
Phone: (530) 889-9500

Seniors can get freshly prepared meals delivered to their homes five days a week from Meals on Wheels, which is administered through Seniors First of Auburn. Volunteer drivers visit seniors who have trouble shopping or preparing meals for themselves Monday through Friday, with extra frozen dishes brought on Friday for the weekend. Low-income seniors are given priority in signing up for Meals on Wheels, but all local seniors are eligible to apply.

Senior Recreation and Respite Program

Address: 485 Twelve Bridges Drive, Lincoln, CA 95648
Phone: (916) 705-3552

Sutter Health and Seniors First work together to operate the Senior Recreation and Respite Program in the Sacramento-Roseville-Auburn corridor. This program plans recreational activities for seniors in the area, as well as providing free respite care.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
