I toured Teal Shores Senior Living. It's a nice place. It's very clean. It's just that the memory care wing is pretty exclusive. The room that was available from my mom faced the courtyard that was just a bunch of swampy grass, and it was in the wrong exposure. It's just nothing to look at. I could never move her to a place like that. She would just get so depressed. It would be horrible. The sitting room that they have, it's in the middle of the floor, and it's dark. It seems like most of the activities are focused on assisted living and not really memory care. They say that the memory care people can go out into the great room area, but they never wander out there on their own because it's just too intimidating, and so different. I mean, it's out of that little hallway that they are used to their comfort zone. It would be too confusing. She'd never be able to do it unless a staff member took her. There's never enough staff. The girl who's in charge of activities was very nice and kind. The room just didn't seem very bright. They were in the process of putting in gray luxury vinyl floors. The room didn't seem very cheerful.

The memory care unit here is horrible. Do not place your loved one in their care. We placed our parents there 2 years ago and the environment and service has gone downhill drastically. The unit is dirty, they so short staffed that they are rarely showering the residents, the food is not appropriate for 90 year olds and present a choking hazard - tough chunks of meat not cut and served without utensils. They are not doing memory care specific activities. While the lobby and other areas look really nice, the memory care unit is dingy and in need of updating (which by the way they promised us they were doing 2 years ago). There are other nice memory care places in the area. Do your due diligence and talk to families of residents in memory care before placing your loved one in a facility.
