We have found a place that's providing memory care. It's like assisted living but for dementia patients. We've never seen anything like it and it's wonderful. The only thing I don't like is the drive because it's almost a 2-hour drive for me. My dad is in it and it's very homey. It doesn't feel like a medical place or a nursing home at all. It's wonderful and just like a house with people in it, you just have housemates. There's a big, beautiful dining room, a big, beautiful living room, a TV, and then there are rooms that are scattered about. Daddy has his own room and it's a perfect place. I just hate that it's so far from me. The staff is great and they have great caregivers. Sometimes if he overslept breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there's always a caregiver there 24/7, so they can always fix them up with a sandwich or a fruit. They could provide food for them, 3 meals a day and even snacks. The activities are great. They walk the residents or they have a backyard and they're allowed to go out in it. They just have to let their caretakers know that they want to go. That way, they can keep an eye on them. It's a beautiful backyard and my dad has even been able to plant. He planted some tomatoes in the garden.

About Gemstone at North Austin in Austin, Texas
From the moment you and your loved one arrive at our community, you can relax knowing you have finally found a partner in care. At Gemstone at North Austin, we have intentionally designed our homes to be smaller than non-personal dementia facilities. This smaller and more structured environment means Gemstone at North Austin provides a level of personalized care not seen in other communities. We are not designed to be a "cookie cutter" corporate business; we are driven by a mission to provide total care -- to the resident and the family. Each home is situated on more than an acre of property, affording the residents a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy. Our landscaped yards continue around each community, allowing residents the freedom to wander or enjoy the flower, herb and vegetable gardens, relax on a bench and watch the birds and squirrels play. Inside our homes you will notice a decor designed to match the history of our residents. Antique sideboards, calming colors and comfortable furniture are features of our homes, every item selected to compliment the residents' tastes. Our layout is structured to allow safe wandering -- residents are in sight of the staff and there are no long hallways to "get lost in." We want our homes to feel like home, for our residents and their visitors and we think you'll agree. Our Austin staff prides itself on providing personalized care for your loved one. Our professional caregivers are trained to understand and respond to the behaviors associated with various types of dementia, including Alzheimer's, Vascular, Parkinson's, Frontal-Temporal, Lewy Body, Pick's, Huntington's and other more rare forms of dementia. Each caregiver receives an unprecedented 20 hours of classroom and virtual reality education. (The state requires two hours of training for certification.) Our training, our education, our staff and our mission are only part of what makes Gemstone at North Austin different than the rest. Come by and see us; we think you'll agree -- Texas owned and Texas friendly. It makes all the difference. To learn more about this providers license and review other available state reports, please visit: Texas Long-Term Care Provider Search

It was nice. Everybody was very nice, very understanding, and answered all of my questions. Everything was good including the dining area, the open areas, and the rooms.
