My mother-in-law is currently at NHC in Oak Ridge, and she is getting very good care. I have noticed that mornings are more lively, and that might be a good time to make a first visit to check it out. All staff have been very friendly and caring with her (and us!).

My mother was just denied admission to NHC Oak Ridge because NHC refuses to cover the cost of the retina injections she requires in both eyes to combat macular degeneration and prevent blindness. People need to know this about rehab centers / nursing homes - the facility gets to decide what treatment they’ll allow while under their care. Even if you’ve been getting this treatment for years and your insurance normally pays for your treatment with no problem (e.g., chemo, radiation, eye injections, etc.), you can’t just go to your oncologist or specialist while admitted to the rehab/nursing facility. They control your care entirely and they can and do and will refuse you any treatment they don’t want to pay for. This is idolatry at its worst - putting the dollar over the patient. How utterly hypocritical and appalling for a business that’s supposedly all about patient care and wellness to refuse critical care because they care first and foremost about their bottom line over what the patient needs while under their care. Shame on you, NHC.

They do not keep the patient or their rooms clean. On Monday mornings the whole hallways down the patient rooms reeks of urine. My dad was there 20 days and the first full week, they didn't change his clothes. In the mornings he would be sitting in a pile of urine. His tray table was always dirty with dried food stuff on it. He would use the call-button, but they ignored him. I would not recommend anyone taking their loved one here.

never never NEVER have a family member put here in hospice care. The staff do not listen or understand what hospice care means. The director Shawn will nod like he cares and then tell you he's too busy to take care of the problem. My grandmother would be better off at home with US taking care of her because WE listen to her yell and know when she's in pain and are not afraid to give the breakthru pain medication that's been ordered for her when she needs it. The staff this past day have been atrocious and even slammed the door in my mom's face. Maybe one day someone will sue them out of business and the world will be a better place.

If I could rate them a 0, I would. While most the staff was wonderful, one staff member was extremely rude, mocking, and aggressive when questions were asked about procedures, medication, and food deliveries. Going so far as to ask in a very unprofessional tone "Do you have a medical degree?" to which I responded, "No, that is why I'm asking these questions." And once resolved, wouldn't let it go, had to involve other people in the mix. When asked if I should take my business elsewhere because they seemed uncomfortable with asking basic questions, was told no, they already had orders, but they cancelled them the second I walked out of the door to pick up my grandmother to take her to the facility. Unprofessional and rude.

One of my family friends was a resident at NHC Oak Ridge and I must say that it is a really nice place for the patients. The staff took great care of the residents and there were several activities that were offered for them to participate in if they were able to do so. One issue that our friend had was the placement of his NG Tube because they had problems getting it in his stomach properly. They did always notice this problem before it became a serious threat to his health, however. Overall, I would definately advise people that NHC Oak Ridge is a good nursing home.
