"Norfolk Health Care Center was really bad. They did not have enough staff. It was a disappointment. The facility was pretty old, which is fine. However, while my husband was there, there was only one working elevator for four flights of people. It's a four-story home. I don't think they take care of the facility. The elevators were broken for two months. If it was for a couple of days, I could understand, however, God forbid something happened when the elevators weren't working. Most of the staff cared about the patients. However, there was not enough staff, especially on the weekends. People have the same problems on the weekends as they have on the weekdays, so you need to have enough staff that will work on the weekends. The food was horrible. My husband never got hot food. It was all cold. He never participated in activities because they wouldn't get him in a wheelchair, get him up, and get him out, which bothered me. I wouldn't put my dog or my worst enemy in that place. They can hire enough staff to get the food to the patients when it's still hot. It may taste better if it is hot. They can hire enough staff so that the patients are taken care of with dignity because they can't get up and get into the bathroom."

"Harbor's Edge is the assisted living facility where one of my aunts is now residing. Aunt Ella has always regarded her "˜personal independence' as being of utmost importance and it took us a little time to discover a senior community where she would truly be happy and content. The one thing she feared most was the possibility of being treated like a child or having someone hover about-watching her every move. What she wanted was a place where she could experience a full life with as much independence as possible. The staff at Harbor's Edge was very helpful from the very first visit and the director eased her worries by taking all of us on a tour of the facilities; introducing us to some of the other residents and explaining that our aunt's freedom to live her own life would be supported and encouraged. She was thrilled to discover she would have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities from poker to scuba diving. If someone wants to try something that is new or different this staff goes out of their way to help make it happen, if at all possible. Today she remains as happy about her living arrangement as she was the day that she first moved there. She regularly travels to downtown Norfolk to eat at a favorite restaurant, attend the opera or simply enjoy a shopping trip. When she needs help with transportation, medications or other daily tasks she knows that all she has to do is request those services from an available member of the staff. She can enjoy a waterfront view just by looking out of the window or walking along the property of Harbor's Edge. There is even a swimming pool that contains buoyant salt water which is ideal for seniors and others who may have arthritic joints. We know that our aunt is extremely pleased with this particular amenity and you can generally find her relaxing in (or by) the pool on many occasions. This facility has given our aunt a new lease on life during her golden years. "

"Waterside Health & Rehab Center is so much better than the other place. My husband gets warm food instead of cold food. It's warm and welcoming when you step inside. The staff has a whole different outlook on life. They are positive, and they do their best to keep my husband and myself apprised of anything that's happening, what they think needs to be done, and what have you. I couldn't say anything else but from the other two nursing homes he's been in, this is a 180-degree turn. It's just like night and day and Waterside is the day. They offer spiritual time with a church. They offer Bible study, bingo, and one-on-one visitation. They have more activities than a lot of places do. There is some food because my husband is very picky, and he didn't like it. However, he said, at least it's warm. Most of the time, the food is OK. He is legally blind, so he couldn't eat the spaghetti and the nurses didn't help him. That's no better or worse than what he's been at before. He didn't expect them to help him."

"My brother is staying in Autumn Care of Norfolk. It's a very nice-looking building. The inside is clean. It doesn't smell a whole lot of different smells. They're short-staffed, and that's my biggest problem. They don't have enough people because his laundry does not get back to him quickly enough. They treat me pretty nicely and they're professional. Some of the things that happened a few months back, I was not satisfied with the social worker, but we worked it out. They have a movie day. They have crafts and whatnot, so they have enough to keep the people busy. My brother doesn't participate in it. I'm just seeing some things that they have on the wall. They have a welcome board where you come in every month with all the residents, let's say this month, everybody who's born in January, they have their names up on the board, and that was kind of touching and nice."

"I was a patient at the facility for most of October 2015. I had been there before and requested to go back. The stay this time was better. The Nurses gave good care and the rooms and halls were clean. I would go back "

"The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. My grandmother really liked it there. The food was hot, and most of the staff would go above and beyond to make the resident feel comfortable. There was a nice garden to enjoy, and several rooms for activities such as card playing. The only thing that I wish was different, was the fact that there was smoking allowed right by the front entrance, and every time I would go visit her I had to walk into a cloud of smoke. There was also a rehab and workout facility provided. "

"When I first put my Brother in there, I was disappointed and angry, because nothing was done for him which protected him from insults and lack of care....but then, after I reached the Head Director of this Facility, and spoke with her...all that changed. She took the matters into her own hands, and heads began to roll at that location for the One(s), who treated my brother with lack of care and Disrespect. She not only fix the problem with Harsh Wording to staff....but she got everything needed into place to take care of my Brother. I feel comfortable with his care now, the staff who now is in charge treats him with Great Respect and His care is on Point. I would reccommend this location to anyone....Its clean, It's Professional Now, and it is filled with caring individuals who takes Patients concerns and Care, with Top Notch Treaments. Thank you to the Head Director for fixing the situation with the Individual who made my Brother's entrance into Thorton Hall miserable at first and for showing true Care, for his Health and Well Being !! "I have visited Our Lady of Perpetual Help many times over the past ten years to visit members of my church. I have always been impressed with the care provided to my elderly friends at this facility, but more importantly, I always look forward to going back. The residents really enjoy themselves at Our lady of Perpetual Help; the caregivers and volunteers always join in for games, meals, and sometimes help the women residents paint their nails. Also, the facility is always clean and the meals are well-rounded and good. The caregivers also host outings so that the elderly residents can get out "on the town" every once in a while. It's a lot of fun to join them on their trips. I've never been to another facility that promotes such great well-being of not only their residents, but their caregivers, employees, volunteers, and visitors. "
