"I liked that All About Family Residential Care, LLC was a home atmosphere. It was in a residence, it was a home and there were not very many residents. You had one employee for three people. What I liked least was their visiting hours, they were very restrictive of the visiting hours. In terms of the staff who toured us around, I would have liked to see a higher level of medical knowledge. It was a very clean facility. They have a courtyard, a fenced-in backyard. They have a very nice TV viewing area or a cinema area. Very nice community area."

"My uncle is now in Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall. It's been great. When you get in the facility, everybody's just really friendly, which I appreciate, because nowadays it's so hard to have somebody say "hi" or "hello" or even smile at you for that matter. Everybody is just smiling, and they all acknowledge the guests when they come in. My uncle is on the second floor, so I actually hang out by the rail and look around, and I do see that they all just wave at you. If somebody comes in, they all wave at the person. They know each patient by name, which is highly appreciated. I like that fact that they know their patients. They take time to talk to them. It's clean. I have not really seen anything that I would say that they do not keep their facility clean. It's clean. It's not far from the hospital. It's been great, and my uncle feels safe there. The staff members are really great. They call the patients by their first name. They're really kind. They take time to talk to the patients, and they make sure they're comfortable, too. If they're outside and somebody starts yelling help, they'll just barge in and help that person, which is good. I think the food is good, but my uncle who is not easily pleased with what he eats, so he tends to pick on it sometimes. I guess my uncle is just too picky when it comes to food. He has always been like that, so it doesn't really make us wonder why he started saying things like, "I don't like the food here," because we already know that he is just the pickiest person in the world. But I've tasted some of the food, and I feel like it's good. My uncle did not sign up for any activities; he is unable to do so. But I saw some of the residents, they have this church choir that goes in there, and then they listen to them perform. They have game days wherein they go down and then they play dominoes. It's fun to see them like they're dogging each other out. I saw a group of them were listening to Audible. They have a book club, and they listen to Audible. They have that monthly thing where they go in there and they just vent out what they want or what they want to change. It's not an open forum, but it's sort of like something to make the facility better. So those were the ones I've seen so far. The program director there makes it a point to where he can have everybody participate. He would make my uncle participate if he could, but he just can't."

"I stayed at Commonwealth Senior Living at Churchland House for four weeks. I like the meals. They were nicely served. The food was good. The staff members were attentive, but they were not too plentiful. They had bingo and Bible study. They had reading and jigsaw puzzles available. I chose a small room, and it was satisfactory. They had a salon and a courtyard. Portsmouth is rather small, so everything is nearby. The upkeep was satisfactory. The cleanliness was good."

"The Gardens of Virginia Beach allowed pets in their facility and that was the main reason my friend chose it. It was also close to home and everybody she knew. The rooms could be bigger but it was spacious enough. I would recommend this place depending on the person's condition. "

"I toured Brookdale Virginia Beach. The staff was very accommodating. I was very impressed with the facilities. It was very well taken care of. I did not see anything that I was concerned about. Outside, when they had an art class going on, everything was set up for the residents. It was very clean."

"We visited Harmony at Independence two years ago. They had a theater, beauty salon, computer room, library, and activity buses that they could take the residents out to doctor's appointments and shopping. Everybody was just great, and everybody we interviewed with was wonderful. We also had a meal there, and it was great. They staff was very nice, very accommodating, professional, courteous, and helpful. The facility was wonderful, too. It was very new, in great shape, and well-maintained."

"We liked the fact that Harmony at Harbour View was very clean when we went in. The staff was very willing to help and to assist. The young lady who showed us around was very knowledgeable and friendly. We also had an opportunity to have lunch to be able to taste the food. The staff was very good. They spoke to you and acknowledged that you were there. Everybody was very friendly. Everybody that worked there, if they walked past or whatever, they spoke to you. They had transportation. They had a calendar that showed whatever was going on that week that we could participate in. The units that she showed us were very clean, ready to move in, and accommodating. They had one-bedroom or two-bedroom, and they had a studio. It was just wonderful. It was pricier than the other place and what turns my wife off to all of them, not just this one, is the fact that you have to pay for your spouse. If your two-bedroom started at $3500 and if you got a spouse, then it went up another $1200 or $700 for the spouse to be there."

"I visited Bickford of Virginia Beach, and it was fabulous. The people and the staff there, and everything, was fabulous. They gave us so much information and made us feel like this could be the place when we get to a situation where my mom and dad needed to be together for assisted living. The woman we talked to give us information about checking with another place that had apartments, and then we can transition to assisted living when that need arises. The staff was superb. As we walked through the tour, in each section of that place, the cook, the maintenance people, and anybody who was in charge of anything made their way to us and introduced themselves and what their function was and made us feel like a family for real. If there was someplace for me to put my dad right away, that would have been it because they had a lot of senior activities. We came in when staff was doing a lip sync kind of program. All of the residents were there, and we got a chance to tour. The facility was clean, neat, and very well-appointed. It was like a family. It's very small and that's another appeal to it, they are not like hundreds of people. It was a small, family-oriented place. The person that we were with, her name's Heather, was a wealth of information as far as continuing our search. She was immensely helpful to my mom and me. I would recommend them to anyone ready to make that move. She really went above and beyond, even gave us some other information and made us feel free to go to different places I mentioned; she knew who was there and somebody that we could talk to. I saw the menu, and the chef and another kitchen person came out and talked to us about what they were offering. It was midday, so they were getting ready for lunch, but I didn't get a chance to try it."

"Mother passed while at Arden Court within a week after she had a terminal diagnosis. The staff couldn't have been more loving and caring with her from her arrival to Arden Court and through the week that she passed. They were loving, kind, and nurturing to her always. I cannot thank you enough for making it a happy home for her. I tell everyone about how wonderful and dedicated you all are to your house guests!"

"Commonwealth Senior Living is basically at the same level other communities. The staff members were very friendly. The amenities and activities were adequate. They were doing a cooking activity where they had the residents making muffins. "

"I toured Harper's Station Yorktown. The staff was great. Everybody we met and were introduced to was great. He still follows up on me, calls, and checks to see what kind of progress he's looking at. We went down and met some of the people who are in the memory care area. The patients all seemed to be friendly. They seemed to be happy. It was a good feeling that you almost felt like you weren't in a nursing home-type facility. Everything around it is fairly new and clean. I would guess that place is probably no more than two years old. The landscape, the facilities around it, the amenities they have in that place, the movies, the outside court, and the entertainment areas they have for people were so nice. They have a band that comes in like once a week and plays. The pricing was right in the ballpark with everybody else. They explained how the lunches worked, that people could come down for lunch. They showed the different lunch rooms. They have a couple of different places and even a bar for them. And the bar is non-alcoholic, but it's like a bar you'd go to somewhere else with all these barstools, tables, and everything around it. It's just that they got all these juices and all kinds of stuff behind the bar. It can make you feel like you want to sit there and play cards with somebody. You could play cards and have your glass of orange juice or something. It's really comfortable. Their lunchroom has a menu on the table, with white tablecloths and menus for choosing what you want for dinner or lunch. Everything gets cooked and everything's done right there. It's not prepared like in a cafeteria."

"Harmony on the Peninsula was a beautiful place. My husband and I looked at their assisted living and the rooms were nice. The staff seemed nice, and the place looked impeccably clean. They have a big common area, there are craft rooms, and lots of activities, too. The dining was nice. It was a big open space and they have dining after-hours where you can order something. It's just expensive, probably the most expensive of the places we have visited. As we walked around, the staff were very friendly, greeted us, and said hi to us. The person who was showing us around was a little snooty. We were like, "This is very expensive so we're not sure" and she said, "Well, not everybody can afford to come here". Maybe she was just trying to be realistic with us because we had given her our financial information."
