"My dad was with Crest Manor for about 8 weeks. It was a very clean center. The staff was lovely. My only objection was that mentally, there weren't enough peers of my father to be able to keep him mentally stimulated. Most of the people there have greater needs than he did. He had broken his neck and he needed physical therapy and occupational therapy. A lot of the people there had strokes and could not interact with him. After being with Crest Manor, he was able to function on his own again. "

"I toured Aaron Manor Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. It was very clean and well-managed. They had a very nice ratio between patients and staff. It wasn't overly burdened, so that was a nice thing too. They had nurses 24 hours a day at this facility. The staff seemed to be very attentive and very caring. The rooms are a good size and even the semi-private rooms were good size, much bigger than a hospital room. There were plenty of rooms. They were L-shaped. The beds weren't side by side. You walked in, one room was to the left, then as you went back towards the back of the room, the other room was facing in the opposite direction, and both areas had windows for the people to look out. It was well planned."

"My mother is in Highlands Living Center. The thing that stands out in my mind most is the fact that as you walk in, there's a receptionist and security right there, and it's bright and more than acceptably clean. The only problem we had with the staff was that my mother was not comfortable with some of the aides, and they've since been removed. She gets along with quite a few people now, and it's been 11 months, so she's kind of worked her way into it. My mother is very particular about the menu. She's not happy with the food seven days a week there, but to me, it looks like it's served well. That's the only thing that she really has a problem with, and the rooms are not as big as they were in the other place, at least the one that we saw. My one suggestion to them is that they need to have another supervisor on the weekend because the staff seems to be more lax on the weekend as far as helping her, because she is not ambulatory right now, and to get her out of bed and to get her dressed seems to be a little bit of a hassle, especially on the weekends."

"Penfield Place is a 40 bed Senior Care Facility . The staff is caring, considerate, knowledgeable & attentive to all the clients they care for on a daily basis. My Mom was there for rehab in 7/10--after a terrible fall which broke her collarbone & several ribs. The staff kept me up to date on her progress even when I could not be there. I am certain that the care she recieved at Penfield Place facilitated her ability to return home with me after only one month. I would reccommend Penfield Place to anyone looking for a small Senior Care facility for their loved one---it is a small nursing home with a huge heart!!! "

"My parents moved into Friendly Home. It's a great facility. It's rated number one in New York State. They're very attentive. They have nurses and they have nurse practitioners on call. They have a social worker. They are in a shared room that's got a wall, but because they're together they got this shared room to themselves. They have their two recliners and a TV, and then they have two twin beds on the other side because they've set it up for a couple. They have all kinds of social events downstairs and they're both doing physical therapy. I think the food is excellent. They're phenomenal compared to other places around here."

"This place is a dump. It was recently taken over by a company on Long Island. The recording that plays when you're on hold makes it sound like a spa. My sister is a resident on the 3rd floor and they never answer the phone (the 2nd floor does answer). She said the food is terrible. Her room is crowded & the laundry practically throws her clothes in the closet. There is a heating unit by the window & the bottom is broken & hanging loose. The wall behind her bed was plastered very sloppily. Her call light is frequently not answered. There is sometimes food on the floor in the hallway & recently there was blood there. The staff is nice enough. My sister's hair hasn't been washed in months. No amenities, although you'd never know by listening to the telephone message. Big turnover of staff. "

"My mom is in Jewish Home of Rochester. She first went there as a rehab patient and ended up staying there. The facility is large and has some wonderful caregivers. They try very hard and do a pretty good job considering the amount of people there and the amount of care that's needed. It's very satisfactory. It took a long time to get the labels from the laundry. I think they have since hired some new people, but sometimes they need more people to care for everybody. They do a pretty good job. Nobody's idle. If I were to make a suggestion, it's to add more people, aides, or nurses. "

"A loved one was once a resident of The Brightonian. The people were very nice. The dining area was very nice and clean. However, it smelled of urine in there, and I'm very picky with smells. The staff is very nice, though. I didn't try the food because it didn't look good. Also, they told us the day before the insurance ran out that he was going to go on private pay. They did not tell us ahead of time."

"Cobb's Hill Manor had single rooms that were available at the time, and they were spacious. Everything seemed very well run. The social worker that I spoke to was very good at what she did and gave us a nice tour of everything. The vibe there was a little down, and my mother wasn't comfortable at all going around. She made the decision right away that she would rather stay where she was. It wasn't a bright and shiny situation there. The staff was definitely outgoing and welcoming. She gave us a nice tour of the surrounding areas, rooms, what was going on there, and their activities. She was very knowledgeable. The room that they did pick out for her, or that they had available at that time, was much larger than where she was, and it felt almost like a small apartment."

"In my experience this nursing home was very good. My grandmother really liked all of the nurses, and over time she became extremely acquainted with each and everyone in the building. There were a lot of activities that went on at least twice a week. I visited once and saw an amazing pianist playing in front of the living room. The food we ate there was... bearable, and I imagine in the resident's advanced age they probably couldn't taste the food anyway. My grandma had a couple accidents while residing there. She fell on the tile floor in the kitchen once and the staff was there within a matter of seconds to aid my ailing grandmother. My grandmother survived a couple falls while there before she passed. The rooms were fairly small, but that isn't too bad for a senior, as they don't have to walk as far to get to their chair. There was a kitchen in each room with an oven, microwave, and sink... also possibly a dishwasher. Overall my experience with The Highlands was a great one. The only possible improvement is bigger kitchens and maybe better food. "

"My mother is in Woodside Manor Nursing Home. It is a great facility. The staff is great, and they're well taken care of. It's long-term. It's for people who have Alzheimer's who can't take care of themselves. The building is older. They could certainly improve on that, but I don't think they're going to. My mom is well-treated. I would suggest to anyone, if they need long-term care for dementia or Alzheimer's or whatever you want to call it, that's the place. It was the only bed available when we had to have it. My mom was in the hospital, and they wouldn't release my mom until she went into this type of care because my mom was falling a lot. We weren't thinking of staying there because it's a little farther drive for my father, who's 91, but the care that she gets is so good that we're not moving. They manage her medications, change her, shower her, and wash her hair. They're attentive to our needs, and it's a smaller nursing home. There are less people per nurse or attendant, which helps with my mom. It's fully staffed. They also get trainees from the college. They have a good training program there. The food is definitely very good. The cleanliness is spot on. They do a lot of activities there. They do bocce ball, bingo, movie night, and arts and crafts, but they make it a point to make sure every day that there are at least two things that they can go to. They're all expensive, but the value that we're getting, because my mom is on Medicaid, is superb. She loves it. The staff is so attentive, and they make sure that during lunchtime, everybody sits with somebody. Nobody ever eats alone. If you need assistance eating, they can do that. If you need a special menu, they can do that."

"We got my cousin into independent living at Cherry Ridge in Webster. It's an ideal situation because he could just walk across the way and go visit his wife who is in skilled nursing in the same facility; he could visit every day. One thing that we liked was the ability he would have to visit her. They're both located on the same site and within walking distance, so he can go visit her as often as he likes. He's in independent living, so he has an apartment, and it is beautiful. It's a three-room apartment with a galley kitchen. It has a little eating area, a full living room, a big bedroom, an enormous bathroom, and a washer and dryer. They come in and clean every couple of weeks but he vacuums it every day. The way it's all laid out is nice. The skilled nursing care is not large. I think they only have seventy people in skilled nursing care, so they really get a lot of personalized care. The staff is great; they're very on top of things. Even though he's in independent care, there's a doctor right there on site, so we transferred all his medical care to the doctor. There's a dentist, too, so it's all very convenient. The food is excellent. If he doesn't want to go to the dining room, he goes downstairs for lunch and brings it back up to his apartment. Sometimes he sits down there in the dining room, though. They bring the dinner right to their door. The menu selections are great and they're flexible. I know he has not taken advantage of the activities, but I see that they have groups that hike around, like walking groups, and they have exercise classes too. They have a lot of groups there, like card groups and hiking groups. I think they even take people to different functions throughout the area. It's very varied but if you don't want to do them, nobody's going to force you. I think their cost is very reasonable too."

"I have been volunteering at/ visiting St. Ann's for over a year now. I have learned about some of the terrible conditions of other nursing homes through literature and films, however, I can say that this is definitely not a nursing home of the like. For the most part, the staff seem to absolutely love what they do and love the residents living there. They do not limit their time or stay to strict to a schedule, but really care about the individual they are interacting with. The facilities are well decorated and give a very "homey" feel to the place. I think that the residents really enjoy all of the holiday/ seasonal decorations as well. The main complaint I would get from the residents, however, was that the food was not always very good. Sometimes it would be served cold and other times, it just tasted too bland. Overall though, I think that St. Ann's is working towards improving and making their residents as happy as possible. "

"Maplewood Nursing Home was very nice. They had a welcoming committee of old ladies who would encourage new residents to go to exercise class and stuff like that. The facilities and rooms offered were good. The receptionist and the caretakers were good. I liked the big windows and good-sized bathrooms in the units. Most of their meals were very good, and they gave people a lot of choices. If you didn't want to eat what was on the menu, they would make you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or whatever, so they were very accommodating with food. The rooms weren't as nice as at other facilities I'd seen. "

"Nursing staff was professional and timely with providing care to my mom. The food was pretty good for the most part. The dietician was helpful in picking out alternate food options for the fish she didn’t like. Rooms were clean and well maintained. Every room came with their own TV. Closets could be bigger, but everything fit and the nursing home was willing to provide laundry service. There were activities everyday and the activity staff were extremely friendly and energetic. Bingo seems like the hot ticket as everyone seemed to show up for that. "

"My mom is in St. John’s Home (St Johns Health Care Corporation) because of her many falls. I have tried the food and it was very good. If they don’t like what’s on the menu they can order from the cafeteria. They are extremely attentive to the patients. The rooms are clean, and the whole place is very clean. They have many activities for them to do. It’s the place that I’m glad I got my mother into. "
