Princeton, New Jersey, is home to more than 30,000 residents, of whom 15.7% are aged 65+. To support the aging population in Princeton, the city is home to several well-equipped hospitals and medical centers where residents can get the care they need. Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center and Princeton Medical Institute are just two of the facilities located in the city. Princeton Health offers a Diabetes Management Program to support seniors living with the condition, including follow-up care and necessary referrals.
Nursing home costs in New Jersey are fairly high compared to the rest of the nation, with a semiprivate room in Princeton sitting at an average of $11,650 monthly, according to the Genworth 2021 Cost of Care Survey. While the national average is $7,908 monthly, the higher prices reflect the developed urban area in and around Princeton. Nursing homes are beneficial to frail seniors who require round-the-clock access to a skilled nursing staff. These facilities offer more support than cheaper options such as home care or assisted living.
The following guide to nursing care in Princeton provides insight into the cost of care homes in the area. It also provides a list of free resources to support seniors.

My mother was a recent admission to the short term rehab facility and I was appalled at the substandard level of care she received.
1. We waited 1.5-2 hours before she was seen by a nurse upon her arrival, and the nurse who performed her “assessment” and skin check had little bedside manner and did not take the time to explain what she was doing.
2. My mother was a fall risk and I was told there are no bed rails as they are considered “restraint” only to find out later that there are rails that can be used if signed off upon.
3. The facility was dirty and the environment dismal, dark and depressing.
4. For the time periods I was there, I saw little effort to speak to or engage with the residents. Some staff were on cell phones when they could have been communicating with the residents/patients.
5. While out on the patio, I could smell marijuana being smoked on the "campus", and while legal, not appropriate at a care facility.
6. Once in the middle of the night, my mother either fell, or slid herself to the floor only to be found by her roommate who had to call for help. She was not injured, but no call was ever made to me or my brother to alert us to the situation.
I do know of people who had good things to say about this facility, but my experience for my mother was less than optimal. I would not suggest this place to anyone…..ever.

They’ve been taking the time to talk to him and try and explain every step of the way what’s happening and how we can get them to report and everything and try and get him strong enough to take care of himself. And everybody has been so pleasant. I can call the nurses any time and they talk to me, which I think is very nice. It’s a very, very clean place. It feels like home. Different areas where you go in and relax, and everybody there seems to be pleased. They have a nice outdoors. You can go and sit in rocking chairs or on the park bench. It’s a very nice layout. They have a barbershop. He has whatever he needs. It’s right there. And they also have a bus service that takes you if you want to go food shopping or do whatever you have to do. They have a terrific menu, you have your choice of what you want. If they don’t have it on the menu, you can ask for it. It’s like a five- star restaurant. He’s been eating very well.

Its been a while since my mother passed so I’m calm enough to give my feedback on my experience there. First off during our tour of the skilled rehab I wasn’t told that my mom would be moved from room to room in her weak state, but it happened. Not once, but 3 times she was moved. I also didn’t know my mom would be put in a behavior unit. There were several patients yelling out continuously and my mom couldn’t sleep at night. I complained to the social worker who got back to me 2 days later. She spoke to me as if I was her kid which I didn’t appreciate and nothing changed. I was basically told that’s the way it is. My mom was sent to the hospital eventually for complications, but I’m sure the stress during her stay didn’t help. Some of the staff were compassionate and actually cared for my mom while others especially at night did not. My mom said they were very rude to her at night. I forget that this is a business and the sales people said what they wanted to get us in the door.

My husband was always clean and cared for no matter what time of day or night I arrived. The food was presented beautifully and he ate with enthusiasm.

Thank you all for making his final months more manageable for both of us.

First what is good about this facility. it is clean well cared for, it even smells "normal" I don’t think the food is anything to rave about, but I think a lot of that has to do with the dietary restrictions placed on most residents.
Now why I cannot recommend this facility to you. When I was there visiting my mother-in-law. The common area was filled with clearly very old people just sitting all watching one small TV. I believe there were at least 30 perhaps 50 patients on the floor and at most 4 visible staff members. My Mother-in-Law is quite ill and she told me the called for help one night (she was cold) no one ever came. There were small thefts (they called them things misplaced) in the week that she was there, and finally they did not seem to notice that she was getting sicker not better during her week of rehab. They informed us that she was not improving and she would have to leave on Friday. They provided no advice on what we should do next, and two days before she was suppose to leave my brother-in-law had to call 911 to have her returned to the hospital. I don’t wish to supply to much more in the way of details but I think she might not have survived if my brother-in-law at not called for help. Of course I have no real way of knowing that, it is only how I feel. Still I would look elsewhere for services.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Princeton, NJ
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Princeton, NJ
There are many resources available to seniors living in Princeton that can help them access support and create a sense of community outside their nursing facility. Families looking to move their loved one into a facility in New Jersey can use these resources to ensure a smooth process.
The Princeton Senior Resource Center (PSRC) is a nonprofit organization serving Princeton residents aged 55+ and their families. The organization helps with care planning and the transition to nursing home care. The center also holds senior programming to help seniors with retirement planning, engage them in social and recreational activities such as fitness classes and provide technology assistance.
The T.R.A.D.E. transportation assistance program is provided by Mercer County in New Jersey and incurs no costs to older adults. Seniors can schedule free transportation for door-to-door travel to medical appointments, nutritional services and more. They should book at least 2 weeks in advance to ensure availability, and a $1 donation per ride is appreciated.
The HomeFriends Program is available to seniors in Princeton and surrounding areas through the PSRC and VolunteerMatch. Together, they deliver a volunteer program that allows adults aged 40+ to offer their time to socialize with seniors for at least 1 hour per week. The program allows seniors living in Princeton to have companionship, conversation and regular social interactions even when they're living alone or in a nursing home.
