"Brookside Village is a fine place. I knew about it already, though. My mother was in there for 10 years, several years ago, and she spoke highly of it. They're nice people. The lady took us around and we're impressed with it. When we made it, that's where we want to go. I've been into half a dozen nursing homes and they all are a lot similar. They have nice places and everything else, but Brookside seems to be much more organized in the way they do things. Besides, I know several people that work there and that's important that you have people that will tell you what they think and they wouldn't be working there if they didn't like it. So that's a big reference point right there. I think they're very organized, for one thing, and that's good. The rooms were very nice. They feel warm. They're not lavish or anything like that. They have everything set up to be useful, but not too much. In other words, you don't want to be in a room where you can't turn around because you got so much junk in there. They seemed to have a lot of thought put in as to the way they have their rooms. It seems to work well. You have the space. You have what you need, but you don't have too much. They seem to be able to handle things. I was very impressed with the place. Most people that have been in there or had people in there are very satisfied with the service they have. The dining area looked very nice, open, and very roomy. People could sit at the table with each other. That was one of the things that impressed my mom. She could always go out and eat with her friends and kind of enjoy. I could probably attest to the food because I know the dietitian there and she's a great cook. The dining area itself is very spacious. It's got enough room for 50 to 60 people and it's very open and it's easy to get around. The people I saw there, 50% of them, were probably in wheelchairs, so you have to have the space available to take care of them. It seems to be a well-run place. That's the best recommendation I could make for anybody that would need that. My wife was very impressed with the place and that's what made me pleased about it, too. She enjoyed the tour. As far as activities, we didn't get into it much. I still have the brochure here yet, and I'm waiting to take a look at that. They were having their exercise period when we were there, which was maintaining flexibility. None of them were running races or anything else, but the movement is very important, with their arms and as much as they can with their legs to keep their circulation up and everything else. The ones that do walk have a good place to walk up and down. In the bad weather, they can stay inside the hallways and get exercise doing that. As far as real physical activities, most of them that I saw there were probably at least 70+ and then some and most of them were in wheelchairs, so you're very restricted on anything much more than just some arm movement and maybe twisting and turning. It's a great place. The staff during the tour was great, very outgoing, and very good with what she did. She got all the paperwork together. I'm a veteran and she got me all the paperwork I'll need later on if we need to have the VA pay for some of the stuff. I know who to go to and get things set up. The financial arrangements are very important, too, and they seem to have everything pretty well together, so that was good. The place was very clean. Everything, the hallways, paint and doors, and everything looked brand new almost like they had been redone. The facility in general looked almost like a brand new one. I'd say it's been renovated in the last five years since I've been there, and they looked good."
