I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My brother moved to New Hanover House. So far, they are offering good pay. They're doing good. I have not tasted the food, but I asked my brother and he said, the food was good. As for the value, the price range was in his budget.

Mother was a patient in memory care. Rooms are slowly disintegrating, dingy and dirty. Mother urinated on floor, and had cut herself. We reported to staff. It took over 30 minutes to get get a response. We ended up cleaning up ourselves. Went back 4 days later and mom still had same bandage that we put on her on her hand. Floors in the unit were sticky from housekeeping utilizing a dirty mop. You could actually feel your feet sticking on the floor. In speaking with staff on the phone about a medication issue, one of the staff members actually stated that the patients were treated with a horrible lack of care. I was shocked. Staff lack of attention to hygiene of patients, safety, and routine medication issues and communication with families wishes are an huge issue. The nurse practitioner that we dealt with did not communicate medication changes and actually went against our directives as POA. As in putting her on an antidepressant without our knowledge and then taking her off without weaning her off. Billing of extra charges are a concern. Kept finding an extra amount on our monthly bill. Wrote emails, called, sent letters. Have not gotten a response to date. For the health and safety of your loved one, I would recommend not putting them at this facility.

I visited this facility

We saw one room at New Hanover House, and it was like an old-fashioned nursing home with no places to go to. There were some people sitting on the front porch in rocking chairs. We talked with the man who showed us around.

My Mother has been in the assisted living side for 4 months & she is doing very well. She has companionship she did not have at home alone. The staff are very good to her. There are alot of activities daily. This is a small community with works well for her. The staff is excellent & they keep you informed of any problems right away. Most of the staff are long term employees.

New Hanover House Assisted Living is a beautiful facility. The staff were very nice and they were able to explain very nicely. They couldn’t have been more helpful and interested in us coming to look at the facility. I like how they were very interested in helping me, but they weren't being pushy. They understood that I wasn’t sure I needed assisted living yet for my mother, but they gave us the financial information that I needed and invited me to come back anytime. From what I was seeing and smelling, it looked like the facility is good.

I visited this facility

We put our uncle at New Hanover House for a month. They kept him doped up. We couldn't even talk to him and he can't even open his eyes. Treatment of our uncle is not good there. They were not responsive to his needs. He was over medicated. The place smelled of urine. I suggest they improve on cleaning their facility. Also, I don't think that uncle was cleaned, bathe or shaven. He was lying there with no clothes on. They left him on the bed all the time.
