Wilmington is a coastal city in southeastern North Carolina known for its scenic Riverwalk district, historic architecture and access to beautiful beaches. Of the 123,744 people living in Wilmington, 16.5% are seniors over the age of 65. There are seven hospitals situated throughout the city, including New Hanover Regional Medical Center, offering orthopedic, rehabilitation and other health care services. Seniors also can access the city’s 295 medical doctors per 100,000 residents. New Hanover County has a senior resource center that includes social service programs, home-delivered meals and transportation. Access to nursing home care in Wilmington is good for seniors, as the monthly care costs, $7,178 per month for a semiprivate room, are lower than comparable prices nationwide.
Some frail or disabled seniors might need to reside in a skilled nursing facility if they require around-the-clock help from registered nurses, personal care assistants and other professionals, such as physical or speech therapists. Seniors who don’t require 24-hour care and want to live in a less restrictive environment may be able to opt instead for home health care or assisted living.
This guide provides more information about nursing home costs in Wilmington, NC, and in nearby areas. Information about alternative types of senior care and their costs, ways to help finance long-term care and free resources available to Wilmington residents is included.

Bradley Creek Health Center of Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall is a very nice facility. They are doing real good caring for my mother, and she loves the staff. We have seen it all, and we had no issues with them. She’s been there for almost twenty days now, and she’s actually improved in the rehab. They do a very excellent job getting her back on her feet, and now she’s able to walk down.
She got a private room. They have a calendar of events and various things that they do in the facility. It’s quite extensive, and it’s a beautiful place. She’s on a special diet, but for the most part she’s fine with the food.

I would not recommend this place to ANYONE! I currently have a family member who unfortunately had no other choice but to go here for rehab. On the way in to the rehab wing there is such a terrible odor it comes right through the mask you have to wear. It’s horrendous! The minute you open the door it slaps you in the face! It’s disgusting! The rugs are completely filthy! These people spend tons of money to stay in a clean sanitized placed. Between those dirty rugs and smell. I cannot wait for my family member to get strong enough for me to pull her out of there! It’s a disgrace!

My dad was in Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation Center. We weren’t too impressed with a lot of things but the physical therapy that my dad got while he was there was excellent. But apparently, dad fell a lot while he was there, he fell out of bed, and they didn’t do a whole lot to prevent him from falling out of the bed. He always complained several times a day that they manhandled him. He wasn’t very happy with them. His other facility looked so much nicer. This one is a little bit older, maybe that’s why the aesthetics weren’t so appealing. The rehab staff did an excellent job but he was upset with the other staff. The food was pretty good. Medicare picked up the tab because it’s considered short-term care.

My dad went to Azalea Health & Rehab Center. They moved his room closer to the nurse’s station just so they can keep an extra eye on him. And they were very active as far as calling us if he falls, and calling us if they needed something from us. So they did an excellent job with that. Most of the time, it was nice and clean. There were a couple of times where everything wasn’t great in his room as far as, dirty laundry, that type of thing. I met the rehab team and I like them. There were a couple of staff members that I did not like some of their answers when they talked to me about him not wanting to stay there. They were kind of ugly about it. The food was good. They let us bring our whole family in because he was there over Christmas. And they gave us one of their little party rooms so we all could get together and have Christmas together. So that was nice. In terms of value for the money, Medicare picked up the tab.

My Grandmother recently spent three weeks in Wilmington Health and Rehabilitation Center. I chose this facility for my Grandmother based on location, room availability and ratings. Upon entering this facility for the first time I found the facility to be clean and without any noticeable odors which I was not accustomed to when visiting other facilities.
Like all relationships there was a learning curve getting to know the routines and staffing but I quickly understood any issues that I had was a direct result of me not communicating with the Directors and staff as to what my Grandmothers and families special needs were. Wilmington Health and Rehabilitation not only addressed my Grandmothers needs but also had her families best interest in mind as well. Wilmington Health and Rehabilitation went above and beyond what I was expecting because they wanted to, not because it was required or requested by me. Their Directors and Social Workers were on the floors and available daily @ all hours including nights and weekends, always more than eager to help and assist. I found "ALL" Nurses, Aids, Housekeeping and Maintenance personnel to be friendly, polite, helpful and compassionate.
I know what it requires to take care of an 101 year old elderly woman who is confined to a bed and has to be bathed, cleaned and Tube Fed daily and turned every 2 hours to prevent bed sores because I have helped do it for the past 13 months.
We as clients should be more respectful and show more patience and understanding for the staffing and facilities like the Wilmington Health and Rehabilitation Center.
More times than not facilities like Wilmington Health and Rehabilitation are left with taking care of patients that their families either don’t have time for or just don’t want to be bothered with any longer.

Abominable facility to be avoided at all cost. Please do NOT admit anyone here. They are severely short staffed and admit it, careless to the point of being negligent and their management is overwhelmed with complaints and is unable to manage. Very poor nursing staff that do not answer call bells or phones (often) and are not even visible on the floor many times. If a resident in a single room had an emergency, it could be a while before anyone would know – and that maybe too late. The food is sub-par. Special needs recommended by doctors/therapists are ignored by the kitchen. Clearly the management is running this on the lowest possible budget. They are soon moving premises and are in a state of total chaos. Family is expected to take care of most of the patient needs – the buck is passed on so is the blame. What if family is not able or willing to; then you can expect egregious neglect. They need to be blacklisted until they step up their act and do what is expected.

My mother was in a nursing home at North Chase (formerly Britthaven of Northchase) in Wilmington just a month ago. She just got out. She was there for rehab, but I was not happy at all with the nursing home. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. She won’t go back there. The physical therapy people were amazing, but the nursing home part of it was not. The rooms needed repairs. She had to get three different beds before she got one that worked. The walls needed to be painted and had lots of marks on them. A lot of the rooms didn’t look very nice on the inside. The only reason she was there was for convenience to me. It was halfway between work and home for me. She was there for 100 days. She had therapy for hip replacement.
I know they’re short staffed. I’d go in there lots of days, and the food would be sitting on her table; she hadn’t touched it. No one bothered to open it up or help her open it. She’d be laying in bed, and it would be laying on a table by her. Her light would be flashing when I got there, and she needed help (she needed changed or something). I’d be there 30 or 40 minutes before I could find somebody to even come in there and help her. That was many times I was there. I came every day at lunchtime to bring her food.

Nursing Home Costs in Wilmington, NC
Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey reports monthly nursing home costs in Wilmington, NC, are $7,178 for a semiprivate room and $7,908 for a private room.
The Cost of Nursing Home Care in Nearby Cities
When comparing care costs with other area nursing homes, Wilmington’s semiprivate rooms are a bit less expensive than those in nearby cities. For example, the cost per month for a semiprivate room in Wilmington is $122 less than a comparable room in Jacksonville. Throughout the state of North Carolina, monthly nursing home costs for a semiprivate room average $122 less than Wilmington. Nursing home costs across the nation show that Wilmington’s prices are $578 less expensive per month, exhibiting the fact that skilled nursing care in Wilmington is overall a less costly option than U.S. median prices.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Rather than choosing a 24-hour skilled nursing facility, many seniors prefer to age in place at home or in an assisted living home where they can take advantage of nursing and personal care services. Frail seniors who require around-the-care but want as much privacy as possible can opt for a private room in a Wilmington nursing home for $7,908 per month, $730 more than a semiprivate room. An assisted living facility costs considerably less than a nursing home at $5,877, and hiring a home health aide at $4,185 per month is an even less expensive choice. The least expensive option is adult day care at 1,408 monthly, but that service may not be adequate for a senior in need of around-the-clock personal medical care.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Wilmington, NC
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
