My brother lives in The Haven & The Laurels in the Village at Carolina Place. Everybody there is very nice and very helpful. They seem to care about the residents. The place is clean. They've kept it very clean, unlike most places where it kind of stinks. This one does not. It is well cared for. They had outside activities. They took the residents to the store or for fun outings. Everybody there was great. I don't have anything negative to say about it at all. The facility is great and reasonably priced. The food was fine. My brother has a single room with a bathroom. No shower. They come in and clean for him. They change the sheets and do his laundry and everything and he doesn't have to do much for himself. It was nice. It was like you're in a little hotel.

The Laurels & The Haven in the Village at Carolina Place was nice. The rooms were also nice, but they were a little smaller and didn't have any kitchen facilities in them. There's also a lot more you'd have to pay for there. They would start higher and then they have care levels and med levels. So, it would charge me quite a bit more Everything looked good on their menu. They had a billiard room, different rooms for reading or watching TV, and activities every day like playing cards, bingo, and painting classes. It was well-appointed. They will take you to Wal-Mart probably once a week as well. Andrea was the one who toured me around and she was very nice.

We went to The Haven & The Laurels in the Village at Carolina Place, and my father has decided on The Laurels (assisted living). The Haven is another building that is memory care. He has reserved an apartment. It's not brand new, but it's smaller and it was nice. It's not one of the newer ones, but he kind of immediately felt at home there. The director of sales was great, answering our questions and getting back to us when we had questions and showed us multiple apartments and views and when Dad wanted to go back and look just to be sure that's the one he wanted, she again showed us multiple apartments and views and introduced him to some of the residents already. It was good. She patiently answered all of our questions and got back to us when we had questions once we got home and she connected with dad, and that's the important part. When my father got there, she immediately connected to him. When we went there first, we had cookies, and when dad went, they had a chocolate cake that they gave us. They told us we could have a meal; it just didn't fit our schedule. The food looked good, and the menus looked good. They have the chef's choice every day. If you don't want that, they have the stuff that's always on the menu, chicken salad, hamburgers, hotdogs, soups, and turkey sandwiches that are always on the menu. The cookies and the chocolate cake were fresh, they were good, and they were boxed up. The facility was clean and it did not smell. They were remodeling the second floor and some of the rooms. You could have a small refrigerator and a microwave in your room.

My friend is a resident of The Haven & The Laurels in the Village at Carolina Place. When my friend was brought in, she was shown a room with a bigger bed. It was more like a queen-size bed, and the room was a nice little room, sort of like a big hotel room and everything, but that's not what she got. She ended up getting twin-sized bed. When I went to see it, the floor was all dirty, and nobody came in to sweep the floor, and she didn't have a broom in there to do it herself. There was not a lot of room for her to put her clothes. She had a closet, but she didn't really have a lot of drawers or anything to put in, so she kept a lot of things right in suitcases. She had a small refrigerator because the food wasn't all that great. They said that they serve very healthy food and things like that, but she said that they had hardly any fruit. She was used to having strawberries and blueberries, and when she was with us she had her routine of yogurt, fruits, eggs, and spinach, but she said that there's no greens there. The only thing they have for greens is a regular head lettuce, but there's no good dark greens that she's ever had since she's been there. My friend really needed to get her hair cut and they have a salon there, but no one was there. She said basically a lot of the older ladies will go in and have perms or something. When I brought her back the day that I took her, there was nobody there, and it was locked up. They have a laundry mat there. She said that they were going to come and clean a room for her, and that they were going to take her laundry, but that didn't happen. They had two different washers with a dryer. She would need help; her sight is to the point where she can't really read or see very clearly. She has one sight that's very bad, and the other one, she has problems with it, so she would definitely need help with that. According to what my friend is paying there, I would give it a one. She's paying a lot of money there for a temporary stay. I know it's furnished, but she doesn't have much furniture. She's got a bed, a little nightstand, a chair, a table, a little refrigerator, and a microwave, and that's it. When I got there, there was one girl that came up and said if she was ready for her walk that she would be glad to go walking with her, which does happen once in a while. I was there just for a short time to bring in her groceries, but I don't think she should have been buying a lot of groceries. She is supposed to have three meals a day, but because she doesn't have the stuff that she likes there, she goes out and she picks up her own fruit and some salads. Breakfast she said was good, but the other two were not that great. The facility is average, I don't think it's anything great. There's work that needs to be done. It looks like run down and it needs a lot of work. Certainly, her room wasn't clean there, there was there all over the floor and stuff like that. She'd been there a little bit, so I would think that someone would have come in.

My husband will move into The Haven & The Laurels in the Village at Carolina Place. The residents seemed happy, and it was very clean. It did not have long hallways, and the common areas were very open and sunny. The food was very good. The memory care unit was a separate unit all on one floor. The outdoor areas were secured and accessible for the residents. The residents' rooms were adjacent to the common areas, so they could walk around in the evenings if they wanted to, and it's like a small town. Like they've got a hairdressing salon and an ice cream shop. It's all set up on the inside like a small town, so it feels like a little village on the inside. The staff was lovely.

My mother lived here for 5 years. We were never happy but couldn’t convince her to move out, as she hated changes. Mom needed help dressing, showering and sometimes getting to the dining room. Often she never got help getting dressed so she spent days in the same clothes. They were supposed to wash her sheets and towels weekly but this wasn’t done until we would complain. We often had to request that her apartment get sprayed for bugs. Her medication was often not given as ordered (I’m a nurse and took her to all her medical appointments and I knew what she was taking and when it was to be given to her). There were a couple excellent care givers and nurses but they can’t work 24/7 so you could always tell who was working, the ones who cared or the ones who didn’t care! The worst thing that happened was when mom had symptoms of a UTI and I told the nursing staff to get an order from her doctor for a urinalysis. They didn’t follow up for 1 week! My mom ended up in the hospital and died not long after that!
