I did a tour of Van Rensselaer Manor. I love the outside, the land, it's just gorgeous. They had everything. They had a huge PT/OT room, a dentist, a podiatrist, and hairdressing. They have a beautiful dining room, and it was very nice. They're supposed to be getting another grant to do more work on it. The staff member who gave us the tour was great. The rooms were great.

I was a little upset with how the staff handle the patiances/clients of Van Rensselaer. I feel they are understaffed. When visiting my in laws, they were gathering everyone into the eating area to get ready for lunch. It was only 10:00 in the morning. Some were sleeping in their chairs, others were getting told not to move. Still others just sat in the wheelchairs in the hall way. You also never know who may show up in YOUR bed. The care for rehab may be good, but the care for the nursing home side isn't all it should be.

My father is in Van Rensselaer Manor. It was chosen strictly because of the rehab program that he had had, but when he failed rehab, he moved into the nursing home side. They're close to where I live. The staff seems to be caring and friendly. The rooms are adequate. There are 2 people in the room, and it has room for a twin bed, a dresser, and a stand-type thing on each side and a chair in the room. My father is not real thrilled with the food. They have exercise activities. They have birthday parties and holiday events. They occasionally go out to plays or a musical if they can get people to sign up.

I was very pleasantly pleased that Van Rensselaer Manor was very clean, bright, and cheerful. The people were very friendly, and the people I visited there were as happy and as healthy as they could be. They were well cared for, and they were there for rehab. The rooms were a good size, clean, and homey. There were personal belongings with pictures and things around. They were nice; one was a private room, and another was a double room, and both were pleasant and spacious.

Van Rensselaer Manor was very good. It was more cozy and homey-type. The place was not as new as some of the others but it wasn't as old either. However, you can tell that people respected it, liked it and took care of it. They were set up pretty good as far as the design. They even have a section that was specifically for people that had to have the oxygen because they have outlets through the hall in all the rooms. However, if you took those out, you also have portables, so they're set up pretty good. They were also pretty well staffed. Even when I went over to visit a friend of ours a few years back, they seemed to be very good. What I did see in relationship to nurses and clients and so forth, it seemed to be very upfront.
