Our average age is late 70s. They enjoy interacting with the many volunteers who work at SHARE in many capacities. Our volunteers include social work interns and lead group discussions or talk to the residents one on one, help arrange holiday parties and are friendly people to talk to. We have high school student groups and scouts who visit SHARE on a regular basis and cook meals on Saturday or Sunday evening and sometimes provide entertainment or lead bingo. Families of resident's often visit on the weekends and good dinners. We have a friendly visitor who leads discussion groups, does craft activities, sometimes organizes very local "trips" to events with the residents. Volunteers stop by the houses and play musical instruments and sometimes lead sing alongs or play musical trivial pursuit.
What places are nearby for independent living residents to enjoy?
The houses are near the center of beautiful downtown Ridgewood with all of its lovely restaurants and shops. We are walking distance to the library, houses of worship and a supermarket.
What are some recent off-site events that the community activity director at S.H.A.R.E., Inc. Independent Living has organized?
The activity director at SHARE has organizes events with Ridgecrest Senior Housing in Ridgewood regularly. A Ridgewood library librarian comes to Ridgecrest once a month and leads a "book club" and SHARE residents participate in that regularly.

None. The Ridgewood senior bus stops at SHARE's door. The Ridgewood taxi company offers discounts to seniors and there is a privately owned "senior" car service located in Ridgewood who provides transportation in the area at reasonable rates.
What makes the chef or dining program at S.H.A.R.E., Inc. Independent Living exceptional? What kind of menu can independent living residents expect?
Our chef is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and has been working at SHARE for two years. Prior to that, he was the catering manager at a prestigious local country club. Our menus are varied. On birthdays the chef lets the "birthday" person choose what is for dinner at their home.
What common areas are available for independent living residents?
Both homes have living rooms and dining rooms available to the residents. The Cottage Place house sits on a large property and the residents and there is seating in the backyard to relax. The Cottage Place house also has a large wrap around screened in front porch as well as a second floor TV room.
What safety features or security measures does S.H.A.R.E., Inc. Independent Living offer to independent living residents?
Both SHARE homes have full house generators! We have elevators in both houses to all but one room. Each house has a SHARE employee who lives at the house. The Ridgewood police and fire department are very responsive to SHARE.

Sorry, we don't allow pets in the houses.

About S.H.A.R.E., Inc. Independent Living
SHARE, INC. is a non-profit organizationwith no religious or government affiliation, with two full-time employees: a Program Director, a chef, a part time resident assistant and a part time maintenance manager. What we have is a Volunteer Board of Trustees and Directors to ensure the Mission of SHARE, Inc is met.
SHARE, INC. was founded in 1979 as an effort to provide affordable housing for Senior Citizens in Bergen County. November 21, 1982, the first resident moved in. September of 1996, a second house was purchased and funded by Community Development of Bergen County. The first residents moved in June 1998.
