My mom has moved into University Living in Ann Arbor only because they were the only ones that could take care of her unique needs. She needed gallbladder surgery, so they put a bag in, and because of that bag, she couldn't go back to the place that she was in before because they wouldn't take her. This place said that they would be able to take care of her. I went there back in the summertime when we were looking for an original place for her. It was a lot more expensive than where we had put her, that's why she went to that other place. Her needs became more now though and they couldn't address her needs there that's why she was moved to this place. It's assisted living and they have doctors and nurses there that's why they could take my mom. The other places don't so I guess that's the most positive thing, that they have medical personnel that could address her special needs. They're probably one of the nicest ones, and they had staff. I remember looking at some other ones and not seeing any staff around. That was the other thing, there were no people. This place felt like they would be more attentive to personal needs rather than not having anybody around. My mom said their food is excellent. It was very well kept, very clean, modern, and looks very nice. The building was old, but it was still well-maintained. When I went to visit, they had a big screen and people were in there watching TV. They also have another area where they watch movies or play games and stuff. There were a lot of things that I saw that would keep the residents busy. They can have pets there, too. Mom doesn't have a pet, but she says that people have pets there.

Our experience with University Living is good. Their food and the staff are very good and accommodating. The place is modern and clean. I'm satisfied, though the feel of the place is of an institution.

University Living was very nice, they were very accommodating, very helpful. The sample unit was nice, and there were a few residents who had their doors open. The eating room was very nice and high quality. They have a room that you can rent out if you want to have a party for a loved one. Everything that I saw was a five out of five. It was very classy and very clean.

My mother was a resident at University Living for the last month of her life. She was treated with respect and kindness from everyone we met. Tanum, the community relations director, is wonderful. During my initial tour, she took time to answer all my questions and was warm and friendly during her interactions with all the other residents. She and Chef Thomas even picked my mother up from her apartment and drove her to her new studio at University Living. During her last month, my mother was very limited in her movement, and spent her entire day either in bed or in the armchair. The dining room was very accommodating and delivered all her meals to her room. The women who run the activities are excellent, and even though my mother was unable to participate in the activities, they would bring her ice cream and check in with her regularly. Although UL is not a nursing home, there is a nursing director on staff and a full time nurse scheduled on the premise at all times. My mother's medications were delivered to her on time by qualified staff. One of the nurses, Nick, took time to sit with my mother on a couple occasions when she had a nightmare. My mother relied on the aides for assistance in going to the bathroom and getting ready for bed every evening. Her attendants were very kind and patient. My mother relied on her hospice team to help bathe her, but the attendants are also able to assist in this regard as well. I was present every day and was grateful for the cheerfulness of the floor supervisor and the medical technicians who helped make my mother comfortable during the last month of her life.

Care and dining room staff not capable of provi ding consistent individualized attention or residents. The staff does not have specialized education in the care of elderly or dementia. Perhaps 25 %of care and dining staff are excellent. These employees have experience and inate skill in how to be successful in carei g for elderly. Housekeeping services are erratic. Often cleaning, sheet changing, towel and toilet paper need to be requested. Usually you need to ask more than once for something to be done. Laundry has been lost. Laundry that was labeled. No particular effort was made to find the list items. Leadership staff has had frequent turnover. I would have given 2 stars but the review system would only permit 1 or 3 stars. I could not in good conscious give 3 stars. The activity staff and front desk staff are very good, capable and invested. ALL staff are genuinely friendly. But their management, training, and accountability is unacceptable.

University Living is close to me. It was friendly. They were relatively less expensive than the other one I was at. It was clean but dowdy. I had lunch there, and it was salty, institutional food. It wasn’t awful, but I wouldn’t go out to a restaurant to eat that food.
