We moved to the independent living community of Wesley Park Centre in Newton. It's a lovely place. We are on the third floor, and there are balconies to a lot of the apartments, but we do not have a balcony. We do have a beautiful scene out our windows. We are enjoying the independent living part because we can come and go as we please. You're walking distances that you normally don't walk, so you get lots of exercise, too. The people here are also very friendly. They provide about one meal a day, so you can pick whether that's going to be lunch or dinner in the formal dining room, or out at the small bistro that's open from 8 to 4. You could get breakfast there if you prefer. You can always purchase the other meals, and they just get added to your account. We've been in the formal dining room twice, and both times, the food was very good. I heard they are going to change their meal program. They said that instead of having one meal free for the day, they're going to give you an allotment of the money, and they are going to make all of the food in the bistro and dining room have a price on it. You can pick what you want, and they'll serve a couple of main entrees every night, so we'd have several things to pick from. If you don't use the allotment up, you will lose it for the month when you start with a new one. However, they're putting up a little convenience store type of thing where they would have supplies you might need, like toilet paper or paper towels, maybe some boxed cereal or something that wouldn't expire right away. If you had say $10 or $15 left over, instead of it going to waste, you could purchase these items there. That way, you wouldn't be losing money. It is a continuing care facility, and everything is located in the same building, with just different tunnels that go to different places. There's also an underground tunnel that goes right to the hospital next door, so if you had to go to the hospital, you wouldn't have to go outside. One of the other nice things about that place is that they have underground parking, so we all have underground parking and just take the elevator up to our rooms. The staff that I have met has been wonderful. They were remodeling our apartment before we moved in, and a couple of things had not arrived, but the maintenance was very conscious to make sure that we had things that we could use. She was also very helpful to stop by and collect some of the packing boxes and stuff that we had unpacked and get rid of them for me. I haven't really met the chefs or anybody that actually does the cooking, but all the aides that deliver the food have been very friendly, very nice, and very sociable. The people here have also been very helpful like when we left the dining room, and they showed us where we could check for activities or do something like that. For activities, they have different card games going on at different times and on different days. They have exercise activities going on all the time, too. There are also bus trips to Des Moines or to restaurants to eat out, so there are outings that you can go on.

We went to Wesley Park Centre independent living, but we're also quite satisfied that assisted living would work beautifully. It has the advantage of being across the street from the public library, a major grocery store, and a hospital. It's three stories and it's extremely attractive. The staff was friendly and informative. We've looked at two or three apartments and there were spaces, in particular very nice kitchens. They have a workout room. If you want meals instead of cooking your own, even as independent, meals are available. They have all the standard amenities. The dining area was fairly spacious. The tables were not crowded closely together. They're fairly well spaced out. It's attractive and comfortable. There were other areas also that we did not look at. If you were having a meeting with 12 or 15 people there were a couple of rooms available, and that sort of thing could be done over a meal included. Upkeep and maintenance were excellent.

My mom had a stroke, and after a nightmare at a nursing home in another town (5 complaints with the state, 4 were founded!), I was able to get her moved to Park Centre for skilled care. The difference in care was night and day. When we realized she would never be going home, they were able to move her to LTC in the nursing home side, and she didn't have to leave. She is as content as can be. The staff have become like family, her care is excellent, communication regarding her has been . As her guardian and conservator, I am the one in contact regarding her care. My grandpa moved here when the building was new, back in the 80s. They are always doing updates, and it is nothing like the nightmare of an old nursing home. We consider ourselves blessed she is there.

My dad has been at Park Centre for barely a month, but everything I would look at now, I would say it is very high quality and very satisfactory. The staff is fantastic. They’re absolutely the best. My dad’s particular unit has a good size bedroom along with a nice living room area. It is well lit. He has two beautiful windows -- one in his bedroom and one in his living room. There are only eight units on that particular floor, and it really has a community feel for all residents on that floor. It is beautiful. There is a common room down the hall, and all the residents are invited to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same time. They have the ability to specialize diets -- for example a low-salt diet -- so it is wonderful. They’re very good. My dad has physical therapy on a daily basis to encourage mobility. There is a lot of socialization. They have coffee and movies. He has access to the entire parts of the facility, which includes independent living. The assisted living option is the right one for my dad, but should he need more, there is also a skilled care available in the same facility. Literally, he never has to leave Park Centre. He has gone from independent living to assisted living, and if he ever needs it, skilled care on the same facility.

I visited Park Center. It was a well run facility, but just too big for me. The staff was extremely friendly. It was also clean and well kept. Like all the places that I have visited, they have very good activities and good food. Their interaction is great. It was just little bit harder to get around because it was so big; it was multilevel. You have to go downstairs to a basement to access any of the recreational activities, and the apartments were upstairs. There was just a lot of getting around, and my mom is 91, so she doesn?t get around the best.
