Independent Living Communities in San Marcos, TX

"I think I would prefer to go to The Continental Retirement Community. I like the price and the physical look of the facility, and its location is convenient. It's very close to where I currently live, so I wouldn't have to adjust to a new neighborhood. The living spaces were not very large; they were medium-sized. I was looking at a one-bedroom-one-bath. They had a library, an activity room, and of course a dining facility. I had a meal there and it was acceptable. It was more casual dining like you would find at Applebee's or Denny's. The staff who assisted me with the tour was mostly knowledgeable. By her own admission, she had only been at that facility for about three months and was not familiar with the territory around it."

"My mother will be moving into Brookdale Gaines Ranch. I chose it because of the look and feel of the place. The residents looked happy and seemed to be enjoying the place and they were out and about and active. The staff was friendly and caring, and we had good communication, so far. It's a very nice facility with a lot of amenities. They have a gym, salon, indoor pool, courtyard outside, walking trail, pet park, poker room, and deli. They had more than anybody else."

"My parents were residents of Brookdale Westlake Hills. They both shared a room there and were well taken care of. It was a very nice and clean facility with excellent food, nursing, and support services. The staff was very professional and friendly. The room size was adequate. It was a two-room room, and each had a television and a separating curtain if they needed it. It was a good facility. My parents were comfortable there. My dad complained about his bed, so they switched the bed out. I saw people playing bingo, doing yoga, and stretching and exercises. You get what you pay for, and you have to pay a lot to get top quality. So, it's expensive."

"I will be moving in Friday at The Wellington. It is a number of duplexes there, it's one level -- which is so much easier on me -- and it is a gated community. We have a full-service kitchen which I have missed today. They served breakfast on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays only, which is fine with me because I like to cook. They have washers and dryers in the room, and all the appliances are furnished. We have 2-bedroom, 2-bath, there is a walk-in closet in the master bedroom and three closets in the second bedroom. It’s one of the nicest complexes I have ever seen. The people who showed us around -- the assistant manager -- is bubbly and friendly, and when you meet her, you’ve known her your whole life. "

"I have moved into Stone Brook Seniors Community. It is very quiet. Very nice people. The staff and location were great. They're great people. They jump on everything. They have bingo. They have swimming. They have church on Sunday. They even have a little barbershop. They have a pool table. They have a huge dining area. They also have weights and stuff. It's pretty much an open area and on each floor, you can see that the common area is clean. It's a little pricey, but it's nice."

"When Mom was at Mariposa at Hunter Road, she was very happy with the service they had there. The management was great. They had the hallways enclosed. They keep the grounds very clean and pretty. They're also very responsive to the seniors. I know Mom was always talking about different events that were going on there that she was happy with. They have a lot of activities planned, especially with the university right there. A lot of university students come and do performances."

"I'm moving to San Marcos. It's called the Kissing Tree for 55 and older. It's just really pretty and I thought it's my chance to get out of Houston. I visited it a couple of times, and it was really good. We have been up there twice and spent the entire day. I like it, and I bought a house. Kissing Tree is completely independent. You can have home care and have some people come in. At some point, I may have someone come in once a week or twice a week, and I have to pay for them, but I still have my own place and go and do what I want to do. If I don't like it, I'll come back to Houston in a year. It's one of the top rated here in the US. The staff was helpful and friendly. I've only worked with my relative there. I just talked to other people that live there and they loved it. We'd do our own food. It's just a place for 55 and older. They have activities all day long like arts, crafts, book clubs, bocce ball, and golf. They have an indoor swimming pool, an outdoor swimming pool, and a humongous workout facility that's beautiful and overlooks the Hill Country. There's greenery everywhere. The way they put the houses is architecturally very pretty. I'm moving there on December 7th, but I've been up there, I've looked around, and I've talked to people. Their HOA is a little bit high, but I don't have to do any groundwork or anything, and I have a cute little house. You have to pay if you play golf, but the other things are free. There is a little putting thing that you can go and putt and I plan on doing that."

"I would highly recommend Sage Plum Creek because it meets our needs. We already know people there. Everybody I run into (even if you don't know them) tells me that they love it there. It's clean and open. The staff is wonderful. We're very pleased with the accommodation that we were able to get. They have a lot of activities. There is no meal plan, which is fine with me. The grounds are impeccably kept and clean. There's a pool, there's pickleball, and there's a doggy park. There is a place to grow a garden if you want. There are cabanas, seating areas, and grilling areas. It's also very centrally located. It's across the street from ACC, where they give senior classes. It is near the Performing Arts Center. It's close to a lot of things, and that makes it very convenient. I still drive, but there will come a time when I cannot drive, and yet there is still transportation available. The staff has been wonderful, too. They have a lot of things. They have an exercise room, chair exercises, and a fitness center. All of your mail delivery, including packages, is done indoors. Everything is in tip-top shape."

"My tour of EdenHill Communities was very helpful. The staff who gave the tour talked to us and asked good questions to help me and also in the process gave me help with some of my thinking and doubts about the whole process. The tour was very clear and not pressured. It was very positive. It was also good because my daughter-in-law was there, and she had seen it, too, and so it was helpful. They showed me a studio. It's just a bedroom and a bathroom. There was a common space, and the people there seemed very content and were talking to each other. The dining areas looked fine. They have a barber area. Overall, I didn't see anything I didn't like. And the one in charge of it was great. I can see why he got promoted to that job. The place was clean and nice. And the floors are the same."

"Dawn personal care home is truly a home away from home! The rooms are spacious and well kept, large living and dining area and an amazing backyard for activities. The owner was wonderful and makes sure all the residents are well taken of. Stellar service! "

"I put my name in Creekside Villas Senior Village because every other place I called was way too expensive for my budget. It's a nice place. My first impression was very nice because it's outside of Austin, so you're more in a country area but it's a little town. The building that we went into and had the interview with had a big area where they did get-togethers with all the chairs and tables and there's like a kitchen there. There's a really nice theater room, and they had a small room for computers and printers that residents could use. They also talked about planned monthly activities that you could attend. The person who gave the tour was very, very nice and she talked to my granddaughter first so she knew what we wanted. They had a 1-bedroom 1-bath, a 2-bedroom 1 bath, and a 2-bedroom 2-bath that you can pick from. Each apartment has its own kitchen, stainless steel smart start appliances, granite countertops in the kitchen and bath, a refrigerator with ice maker, and a dishwasher, and they have facilities in the apartment for a full-sized washer and dryer."

"Emerald Cottages of New Braunfels is strictly independent living. There was no food. The tour was excellent. I really liked it. They're new. You get a lot more room. What they offer is like 1,000 square feet versus plans that are 600 or 700 or even 900. They're a very spacious and very well planned out community, and they're more affordable, but they don't offer assisted living. They don't have that transition option. The staff was very good."

"Vista Village is mostly what my mom needs; it's basically assisted living. The staff is very conscientious and very caring, they really care about their residents, and they try their best to keep everybody as happy as possible. They do a good job. It's a quiet place, and it's been around for a long long time. The owners take good care of it, and they keep updating it. It's a good place to live. Her apartment is a 1-bedroom that is space-wise, adequate for one person. They have all kinds of stuff that they do with the residents. They have an atrium where they have parties and celebrate birthdays, they have a large yard in the back where people can go, and a large yard in the front so people can go outside. They also have a large van that could take them anywhere. It's just a typical large assisted living facility."
