"I toured The Plaza at Punchbowl. It was very cordial. Everybody was smiling and everybody was helpful. They answered all the questions or anticipated questions. However, they're undergoing extensive renovations. They're redoing everything inside and outside. When it's finished, it'll be even nicer. It's a 20-year-old facility. We went to see almost every part of it that they could except for the renovation areas. The rooms were bigger even for the companion room. They have them designed nicely. The studio types have the walls coming out, so even though there are no doors, you don't see each other when you're in bed. They have so many common areas, and they're nice."

"We have moved into Kulana Hale Senior Apartments. We have been here for a month and a half now. Everyone is very friendly here. We have a one-bedroom unit that has a living room, a bedroom, a bathroom, and a full kitchen. I like that all the units have speakers in them so we can get announcements from the main office throughout the day or as needed, or if there are fire drills or something going on, the fire drill will go off. The office people are wonderful. The people who work in the building are also very caring and attentive. They have a lot of patience. We have an area where you can go and do some exercises. We also have a washer and dryer that you have to pay for. It's $1.25 per wash or dry. They have a lot of activities here. They have movie nights on the weekends. They also have bingo nights and line dancing. Everybody can go and attend. You meet your neighbors through there, and it's a nonsmoking building. If you want to smoke, they have a smoking area outside of the building, and all the smokers go and gather there. The facility is very clean and well kept. We're happy here. We can afford this place. There are two big shopping stores. Safeway is down the street; we could just walk down there. There are big carts from the building that you could push to Safeway or wherever. You can take the cart upstairs to your unit, and when it's empty, you take the cart downstairs so that other people can use it. So far, we noticed that everyone here is like one big family. It also feels safe."

"My mom is with Central Union Church Adult Day Care & Day Health Center now, and it's wonderful. It's very accommodating and there's plenty of help. The food is excellent, everything is excellent. You can go as many times or as few times as you want to go. So if your senior is a morning person you can go in the morning, and if your senior is a late person, you can go later in the day. If your person doesn't want to go, you just call them up and tell them she's not coming. The building is part of the church, so it's quite large. They divide the people according to their interests. There's art and games, they have exercise, and they take them on a walk outside around the area to get fresh air."

"Kalakaua Vista is only about 6 or 7 years old. The majority of the staff is very, very nice. I have yet to come across a rude person. They are extremely friendly. Some of the units have case workers that live on property, which I think is a fantastic benefit. The upkeep is very nice and the maintenance is very good. "

"The thing we liked the best about Manoa Cottage was that they had people who spoke Japanese and they had oriental foods. It's made up of three houses with eight bedrooms in each. The rooms were very small and very simple. Then there's a community bathroom. They also have a TV and a koi pond. It's an old place, but the staff was very nice and very calm."

"Kalakaua Gardens is a good facility right in town. It offers every level of care from independent down to totally dependent. The dining area is beautiful. The menu was quite nice. It had very nice choices and things like that. They had PT and OT. The staff was very nice and was a lot of very young people. The common areas were very beautiful all throughout. They have quite a few areas and smaller little sitting areas. Everything is self-contained in the building. They have a patio and things, but the other places had a yard and things like that."

"My experience at Hale Ho Aloha was very nice. The rooms were very nice, and the staff was very good. Because of the level of care that they offer, they don't have too many amenities. The security was OK, and the value for the money was good. It had a great view. Mom said they took very good care of her. I liked the fact they gave her the attention she needed. "

"I visited 15 Craigside and it was a really nice facility and probably one of the best on the islands. The staff was very friendly. They have studios and 1-bedrooms. They also have a lot of amenities, like a solarium that has a pool table and ping pong, a swimming pool, physical therapy, and personal trainers. They have a big dining room, a movie theater, arts and crafts, and different activities going on all the time. They have independent living, assisted living, and long-term services also. The food was actually really good."

"The Plaza at Waikiki was very expensive but very nice. The apartments were nice. Everything was nice. The staff was very friendly. Everything went well. The food was very bland, though. The residents looked happy and not bored because it's in a resort area. It's a very nice community, and we're quite impressed with it. The thing that was so impressive was the barbecue area. It was very nice. The dining area was nice, nothing exceptional. What I didn't like about the apartments was that you couldn't open the windows. The people were really nice and very accommodating. The rooms were well designed and there was more closet space."

"My dad moved to Kokua Hale. The staff is very helpful. They're not responsible for watching the residents because it's independent living, but in my father's situation, because he has dementia, which has now progressed, they keep an eye on him. It's a clean and fairly new building, but there are a lot of building flaws now. They have a luncheon and a craft fair."

"My brother is staying in the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific. It was very, very well-kept maintenance-wise. It was an excellent place for him to be for rehab. The staff is very friendly, caring, and professional. He's on physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Their food is excellent. They are very in tune with the patient's needs and do an excellent assessment."

"The Care Center of Honolulu was really bad. I knew that they were understaffed because they would always tell my sister to let her bladder fill up first before she goes pee because she pees all the time. Their therapist would say he’ll get back to you and that he was busy, then he’ll go home and say that he’s out of time. It was a repetitive type of thing, and she was there for several weeks. The Care Center of Honolulu was not doing their job. What they did to my sister was not right. One of the male orderlies shooed her out and asked her why she called and rang the bell. He got mad, and he threw the call button on her head. Stay away from that place. It’s bad news. I know buildings, and I can see that the facility is old. They would feed everybody the same kind of food, and it was too salty, and to counteract that, they give them blood pressure medicines. Then they’ll feed them sweets which they’ll enjoy, but seniors tend to have diabetes. The other thing, too, is my sister does a lot of cooking and she told me that they were recycling some of their food which is OK, but she found part of some dish in her breakfast, so the food quality was not up to standard. I’m not a trouble maker. However, when I see inequities, disrespect, and inappropriate behavior, I want to protect the next client. Nobody should be subjected to what my sister was subjected to."

"Hale Ku'ike was of a really good quality. It's clean, very caring, and the location is phenomenal. The staff was great. I don't have any complaints. They have a beautiful outdoor space."
