"My mother-in-law is currently at Hawai'i Kai Retirement Community. It is well managed. The COVID restrictions are good. The meals are healthy for the elderly. I don't think I have anything negative to say. She has a caregiver with her. They have a menu, and you can select from the menu. There's always more than one choice. The food is done by chefs. I have eaten the food a few times. It's not like going to some fancy steakhouse, but the food is fine. I don't know how to say it any other way; the food is healthy. It is not junk food, which is good for the elderly because a lot of people have poor habits. They have nice facilities in regards to the accommodation. They have many activities. Because she's 97 and in a wheelchair, she doesn't participate too much. They do have facilities. Every day something goes on. If you are interested, you can participate. Everything from yoga for the elderly, to music, to storytelling; it goes on and on. They have a lot of exercise activity, but she doesn't participate too much because of her physical condition."

"I have acquaintances that are at Good Samaritan Society Pohai Nani, and so I just went with them as their guest over a year ago. Overall, it's a pretty good place. They were a casual place. They have facilities for everything, like for exercising, swimming, certain classes, and trips that you can go on the bus to wherever you need to go. Also, they have scheduled meal times. There were just a couple of things that I was not real fond of, but that's just me. One of them is that they have a dress code when going to meals. To me, it's a little much because I prefer a more casual approach to dining. It is just a minor thing. They have an area for people who become ill. It's almost like a hospital area, where they have nursing staff and doctors that come in. The problem is it's very limited and a lot of the people that are in there are Alzheimer's residents. It tends to fill up. If that's one of the things I would have been counting on, it would be something that was a problem for me. Their apartments were a comfortable size, assuming it's for a single person. They have actual little apartments, separate for a husband and wife. They'd be in their own little home. They have kitchen facilities and a separate bedroom. They're not just kind of a big open room with everything in it, and I liked that better. The staff was very nice and very helpful too. The people there were mostly local people. A lot of them were acquainted with each other because they're about the same age. It's a pretty friendly place overall. The dining area was very nice as well. The food was pretty standard, but it's very good food. However, they just have the same menu every week."

"15 Craigside is well-maintained and I like this one the best because it’s smaller and there’s less corridors and everything. The people are also very nice, and they have all the medical facilities in there as well. Actually the location is very good because it’s very close to where we live now and to the hospital. They have art classes and movies, and then there’s the bus that will take them out to the shopping mall or doctors’ appointments. I guess my parents like it because it’s smaller and more intimate and the location was a big plus. "

"My father is at Plaza at Moanalua. He has been there going on two years now. They’re wonderful! If he could stay there forever, I would leave him there. I have eaten the food there, and it is awesome. It is restaurant-style. The dining room area is beautiful. They also have activities galore. They have field trips, movie nights, and tailgates in the theater room. The facility is beautiful, and the rooms are nice. My father is in a two-bedroom, so he has a roommate. His room has a refrigerator, a microwave, and a sink area; there is no cooking, though. It also has a bathroom. The staff goes in and cleans it once a week. I recommend this community to others if they can afford it because it is expensive. "

"I toured The Plaza at Punchbowl. It looked pretty good. The people seemed nice. I met with the person who went over the facilities with me and things like that. He was good. He was very informative. The activities sounded pretty good. Depending on whether they want to participate or not, at least they have options. It was also clean and up-to-date."
