I am/was a resident of this facility

I was at Berkley East Healthcare Center. They were not very nice and they weren't helpful at all. I was there for at least two months. The third night, they were trying to send me home, and I couldn't understand. Just that initial experience was terrible. I had a number of boxes with me because I work, so I brought my computer and papers to work on. I'm figuring out if I'm going to be there for four or five weeks and all the director did was complain, "You've got too much stuff." Then he had the girl put all my stuff in the cupboards and I can't even reach the closet bar and I've got stuff on the top shelf. They were very rude when they admitted me. They were rude all the time. The staff, particularly the director, was very inhospitable. I never was offered a private room. I had a shared room. I had a bed on a window. They moved me to an end room that was much larger where I was by myself for a while, and I don't know what the move was all about. If the staff didn't talk to you, you wouldn't be surprised because they just were not friendly. It was like they were afraid to speak with you. The food was dreadful. They gave you a menu, and I just resorted to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. That's how bad it was. They had a candy machine and I survived on that. I gained a lot of weight because of it. They were out of cookies and out of chips, and I had to resort to chocolate. There was rust all over the wall underneath the sink. They wanted to look nice, but they didn't take care of the details. They didn't clean the toilets right. It was disgusting. There wasn't any activity.

The staff is top notch. the Nurses and CNA’s were very attentive and caring. Kailani, Abraham, Jesse, Erica, Jackie Susanna Martha and so many more. O PT Physical Therapists (pt) and occupational therapists(OT) worked so hard to help me be ready to go home and get back to life. Tyler and Janey were standouts for me. Sam was also amazing. 2 Leo’s were great, leah !! So many more ..

The building is NOT handicapped accessible. If you park in the below ground parking lot and use a wheelchair, walker or cane, you're trapped because the elevator from garage to lobby is not working. If you try to walk in through the main front door on Arizona Avenue, you will not be able to open the door on your own. It is extremely heavy glass. No automatic opener. And usually, no one at the desk to get up and open the door. UNSAFE!!

The good: physical therapy, speech therapy, clean room, good doctors. The bad: Doctors rotate every few weeks. No coordination from staff. They Do not return calls. Social worker not engaged in care. No discharge planning. Patient discharged at a moments notice. Discharged without medications.

Found most of the nurses ( from CNAs-LVNs-RNs), and PT and OT staff kind, caring, and helpful... as well as had a great doctor. But the overall administration-social work- admissions depts were quite lacking... i.e. they typically were either not available, not accessible or non responsive. The food was surprisingly decent to occasionally really good. The general ambiance and environment pleasant, clean and nice. I was a short term, post surgery rehab patient twice over last 8 years and would choose Berkley East again if need be.

This place is so disorganized. When you call anyone in charge, you rarely get an answer, and their mailboxes are full. Therapists change daily and you rarely get the full amount of therapy that is required. Call buttons aren't answered in a timely manner. Patients frequently wait an hour or more for help. Food is terrible. This facility is extremely understaffed!!It is nearly impossible to talk to anyone in social services or administration. Doctors are suppose to see patients weekly. My friend who was there for a month and saw the doctor only once on the day she arrived even though she requested to see a doctor, that request was never honored. An activity director never saw my friend, and she was never offered to participate in any activities. The only good thing is that the rooms are spacious and comfortable. However, that doesn't compensate for lack of proper treatment.

My husband is in Berkley East Healthcare Center. It's a skilled nursing facility and it's very good. I wish I could keep him there longer because they have physical therapy and occupational therapy five days a week, which is great and he needs that. The problem is, unfortunately, he's been stubborn and he has not availed himself of the excellent therapies that they have there. I would recommend it. It has some downsides, too. The food isn't great and right now it's understaffed as every place is and that's understandable. The staff changes all the time. The place is clean and they are very Covid careful and I like a lot of things about it. As far as the therapists and stuff there, it's great. I like the therapy. He's been there for six weeks already. The staff is OK but a lot of them don't speak great English, so they're sometimes hard to communicate with. They have activities. They have a little sheet there, and we never used them at all. They have bingo, they had a holiday party, and they have a penthouse and they had some kind of a party up there. They have a gym there. It doesn't have a ton of machinery, but it's good for therapy when they take the people down. I've been in that, and it's nice and clean. It's not huge, but adequate for what they use it for. It has a bicycle and they can sit in a wheelchair and do an elliptical. He's been there under insurance. He's not been real cooperative, but they've kept him there a month longer than they normally do.

My Dad ended up here for reasons I don't know. See I had left my contact info 2x with nurses at Saint Johns Hospital which is across the street and no one to date has contacted me. I am my Dad's only family. I have called everyday for 3 days now and still don't know why he is here, what they are doing, or when he will be released. I have spent 3 hours calling today and I either get hung up on, put on hold-to only get hung up on, or the phone rings and rings then drops you. I am on hold right now....NOTHING. How do you operate this way? Does no one (nurse or doctor) not think to themselves that my Dad is too old and may need an advocate or to speak to family to inform them of the situation? I am so upset right now. I work and can't call all day long. I have now resorted to filling out the CONTACT US on your website just in hopes to speak to a human that is caring for my DAD.

This place is disgusting. They don't know what they are doing. CNAs walk around for an hour or longer before they know their assigned patients. No one ever wants to help they always have excuses. My mom was there for 2 1/2 weeks ended up with influenza and pneumonia. I kept telling the nurses something was wrong for 3 days before i insisted they take her to ER and that took 3 hours. The hospital sent her back there on their own and she was back in ER 3 weeks later septic and fighting stage 2 bed soars. This place doesn't even deserve 1 star. Neglectful and the lack of cleanliness. We witnessed cross contamination and just a lack of integrity across the board. We nearly lost our mom twice due to the kind of care she received here, she was in ICU twice in less than 60 days. The hospital was so concerned they contacted the ombudsmen for us and started an investigation. We moved her to better place in Fountain Valley and she is thriving.

The call button is the room might have not been connected to anything the nurses would never come. We got my grandmother out as soon as possible, but now her home care is dependent on Berkley sending her medical records to one place, and we've been trying to get them to do so for over a week. No message is ever returned, no one can seem to figure out how to do a simple thing like take ten minutes to fax medical records. My grandmother is literally in danger every minute they don't do this, but they just won't.

While most places will have its pros and cons, Berkley East/West is filed with more cons so if you care about your loved one don't bring them here!!! Starting with the receptionist, the “executive staff”, the nursing assistants, and the wound and physical therapy team, it leaves a lot to desire. I can’t explain my family pain and frustration to deal with them. Not to mention, if you you try to call your “loved one”, the nurse stations, will NEVER EVER answer the phone, and when you ask you, they tell you: it is broken… I'm not sure how many patients the nurses have. I have yet to see an RN mostly LPN. It's like pulling teeth to have conversation with them to find out status of your loved one! Unfriendly staff. Dad needs set up to eat, tray was sat down in front of him and staff just left it!! They claim to be specialized in wound care and physical therapy, I can only say that they are not qualified to have that in their credentials… They do not provide adequate care. Staff is always unavailable and unwilling to help. They do not welcome you there, they just can’t wait to send your loved to the next emergency room and never see you back again, even if they always have room available, they will tell you, they are over capacity. Overall it is clean, but they hate helping your loved one with showers. Generally no urine odor! They really need to hire more RN's to professionally manage this place so there's better guidance. If you try to talk to any staff member, forget it. This is not a place where you want to take your loved one. Ps: Even if you have insurance, they will make a way to ask you for extra money and charge you extra, why? I have no idea. Even Medicare said: “We do not understand their policies”. I could say more, buy my sense of education will not allow me to write what our family really felt during my “loved one” staying there. We choose to run away, :BEFORE IT WAS TOO LATE: and we are much happier now in another care facility whom is giving my our love one, respect, care, and mostly wound care and physical theraphy every single day.

If you are looking for a place when people don't care, don't give you the medications you need, the care you need, the physical therapy you need... if you are looking for a place where nurses and employees treat you with disrespect and make you feel like you don't belong, this is the ideal place for you. Berkley is the most horrendous place and the employees are the most rude, and uncordial people that we ever met. If you try to call them, good luck! I would only recommend this place to my worst enemy.

This place is an absolute disaster. There is only one nurse to 15 patients, and I genuinely feel bad for the hard-working nurses. There are a few who just sits in the back and does absolutely nothing to assist the elderly in need.

Berkley West was horrible. It was dirty, it smelled, nobody was on staff, and I had to wait for 20 minutes to see anybody. I wouldn’t recommend it for anybody who cares about their family member. It couldn’t be any worse.

I visited this facility

My mom was at Berkley East Convalescent Hospital for a while. The facility is beautiful, clean, and in a great location. We were extremely unhappy with the care and the service, and I had to hound them daily to do things for my mother. She was hard of hearing, so they put a ‘Hard of hearing’ sign up, and they didn’t speak directly to her. They lost things. There were a couple of people there who were very condescending to my mother. She couldn’t wait to get out of there. The dining area was OK. She was on a soft food diet and it was horrible; then when she got back onto food and requested things, she didn’t always get what she requested. It was not good service. For some people, it’s fine, but if the person that is there cannot do things for themselves, it’s not the right place for them. They need to improve communication between the staff and the doctor, then between the staff and the guests that are staying there. They need to be a little bit more compassionate about the work that they are doing. The ratio of nurse’s aides to patients is not a good ratio, and they need better training for their nurse’s aides.

My mother was at Berkley East for three weeks, and my father was in their rehab facility previously. I think they were adequate; they did their job. They were a little overworked, and my mother was very difficult, so actually you have to give them some credit for being tolerant with her erratic behavior. She was really out of sorts for a while, getting up and fighting, kicking, scratching, and throwing tantrums, and they were extremely tolerant in dealing with her, so I have to give them a lot of credit for that. She was in a room with another person, and it was OK. It was just adequate. Their PT and their OT were pretty good and easy to deal with, so that was one of the highlights. The food was OK; it wasn't great, but it was good enough.

I cannot say enough about Berkley East. They have four floors. They have excellent care for their patients. In fact, the elderly may as well stay there because they have all of their medical needs, and they are well taken care of. I don't know how many people they have on their staff, but there are 7 patients per nurse. They come in at 8 and leave at 3, and they are around the clock or 24-hour care. They are extremely knowledgeable, and they take very good care of their patients. It is a little pricey, but it is worth every penny. They have a rehab department that is to die for. There are at least 15 or maybe 20 therapists. They are working with their patients, and no matter how minor or serious the rehabilitation is, they are right on the spot. They are all very well equipped and very knowledgeable with their patients. We are very pleased, and my husband has very good care.

Considerate and professional. My mother is at Berkley East for the second time in two years. Being in a rehab facility is a complete drag for any person let alone someone with limited mobility and ability to care for herself. Still my mother is receiving considerate and professional care in an warm environment. Apart from quitting my job and moving in with my mom, I cannot replicate this level of care at home to say nothing of being unable to provide the PT and OT that she needs. I am grateful for the care she is receiving at Berkley East.

When first entering the facilities of Berkley East, I was charmed by it's overall ambiance and setting close to the beach. The rooftop allowed for lovely days with my grandfather in the beautiful California sun. However, in terms of the staff I was not to impressed. While most had a great aura about them, the ones designated for my Grandfather where often neglectful or unwilling to do difficult tasks, such as helping him stand up. Instead they would say things like, "he is not quite ready, he needs rest." rest was the last thing he needed! Subsequently my grandfather would often appear tired and lathargic. To prevent themselves for being liable for his condition, they over 3 times had him transferred to the nearby hospital, which ended up traumatizing him further. At 87 these visits to the hospital where not easy!

My dad lives here. While she was still living, my mom lived here too. We chose it because it's across the street from St. John's Medical Center -- very convenient if you have doctors there or are having radiation, etc. in the John Wayne Cancer Center across Santa Monica Blvd. from St. John's. Staff is available to take residents via wheelchair to both those facilities. It's clean and mostly furnished (hospital-style) doubles with a few singles. There is no separate dementia facility, though patients with dementia are accepted here on a case-by-case basis; most have private-duty nurses. The staff is pleasant and works hard to create activities such as ice cream socials and bingo that will interest residents. They work well with the private-duty staff, and have always been good about assisting Dad's nurses with diapering, walking etc (Dad can walk the halls with a walker and assistance, which he does several times a day). Physical and occupational therapy is in the basement, as is the hairdresser/barber. A couple of very friendly therapy dogs come to work with one of the therapists, and visitors are welcome to bring family pets along. The roof garden is wheelchair-accessible and very pleasant, with views of the ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains. There are occasional outings, but most residents are so infirm that they're really not able to benefit from this type of activity. It's in a nice residential area between Santa Monica and Wilshire, so you can take your loved one for a wheelchair spin in the neighborhood if he/she feels up to it. Parking (paid) is also in the basement and is very limited. When it fills up, parking spaces more than one hour are several blocks away, so you have to keep feeding the meters. Parking in this part of town is only free on Sundays.
