"I toured TerraBella Pheasant Ridge. When I went there, they were playing a game, like a little treasure hunt game. They had the patients go around looking for certain things. It was interesting to watch them doing things like that. They like interacting with the patients and everything. They also have a garden there. They help the patients with gardening. The staff was very good and informative. She was able to explain things to me and answer all of my questions, and she was very pleasant. It was very clean and seemed very pleasant. They showed me how they had them come down for lunch and everything, so it was very nice."

"The Harmony Collection at Roanoke - Assisted Living is my favorite. They have the same amenities. The only extra thing this one has is a movie theater on the third floor. It's a huge screen with chairs set up, but they have a popcorn machine, too. The rooms are the most gorgeous apartment rooms I've seen in any of them. It's a newer building, too. They're really big, and they have things like built-in bookcases or places to display things. It's nice. They would replace the carpet and paint, and when you move in, you would get a brand new room. I loved the staff who gave the tour. She was probably the only one that got to meet my mother. She was so personable and so cute, and my mother enjoyed meeting her. I saw the patio where they have grills and things like that, and sometimes they have music out there. The patio opens up onto sort of a protected area. They're going to plant some things back there that would protect it from the wind and such. There's an overhang so that you're not going to get burned by the sun or wet by the rain. They would do your laundry and clean your room twice a week. It costs more, and it's the most expensive, but everything is included. There's nothing extra for you to pay for."

"We went to The Harmony Collection at Roanoke - Independent Living. My mother-in-law was impressed. She liked that it was all in one building so she could access all the amenities. It was convenient. They gave us a complete tour. They showed us the dining area, the arts and crafts area, and two different apartments. The floor plans were very nice, and both are great options. We also tried the food, and it was good."

"We visited the English Meadows Blacksburg Campus and toured their memory care facility. What we liked best was that the companion suite area has two separate rooms with doors and a bathroom. Then there was a main door to go to the main hallway. The place is also close to home, and the price was reasonable. They had a dining area for memory care, and it was separate from the others. They had activities, too. I don't remember exactly what type, but they had some special ones for memory care people. The staff members were nice and friendly and gave us the information we wanted."

"I took a tour of the memory care at Salem Terrace at Harrogate. The memory care is a locked unit where the patients cannot leave, whereas assisted living, they can come and go. It's a very nice community. The building is very attractive. When you go in, there's a visiting area, and that's for the whole facility, no matter what area they're going to be in. And then you take an elevator down to the lower floor for the memory care. When you go into the memory care part, it's like an open area. One end of it is tables where they actually eat, and then down on the other end of it is more of like a lounge area. There's a big TV and some books and things, then along the sides of this big open area is where the rooms are. The individual rooms have a bathroom and a closet for their clothing. Also, at the far end of this open up area, is a door where they can go out onto like a patio area, which is completely closed down. In the nice weather, they can go out and walk around to visit out in this outdoor area, which is very nice. The staff seemed very friendly. Like everywhere, there's not a lot of them, but the ones that I saw seemed very nice. Once a week they go to a music activity, and then a social worker takes them out to terrace where they can go outside. They encourage them to go out and walk around and do that kind of thing. On one of the walls down there they have what I would call a busy board. It's like things that you would manipulate, like a screwdriver or a wrench where you can turn bolts, like a little steering wheel that you can steer around, so there are different items that you manipulate and do different things with, like eye-hand coordination type things. The rooms are small, but they don't really need to have a large room of their own because if they want to do activities, they can go out in that big open activity room. It's mostly a bed and a dresser. They have a nice little closet where they can fit their clothing and things. There's a bathroom with a shower, and they can take showers there in their own space. The flooring is nice. It's not carpet, which is good, because it's cleaner than what it would be with a carpet. The rooms seemed very clean. I was impressed with it."

"My mom is in Joseph C. Thomas. The staff and the housekeeping is excellent, and the food is just average, but the quality is OK. The room is great and beautiful. It’s private. They keep everything very, very, clean, and there’s no odor. The grounds are excellent and kept very clean, and they are very well maintained. She is happy there. She can sit outside when the temperature is good. "

"Brandon Oaks has a great reputation. It is beautiful, but it is out of my price range. They're extremely friendly. I had lunch there and it was great. They have a library. They have everything. They have a pool and a tennis court. You name it, they have it. There's a hospital right down the road, and there's a big shopping center and a restaurant there. You name it, it's there. With regards to upkeep, it's spotless. It's very well maintained."

"My husband is currently at the Virginia Veterans Care Center. They've done a very good job with him, and they're doing regular, weekly COVID testing, and they've been very diligent in keeping that out of there. Even though they have a lot of cases now, they've actually done a very good job. Everybody's been fine, everybody's been very professional, and there's good communication with everybody up there. He seems satisfied with the food."

"My tour of Woodland Hills Community was very good. It was a very lovely facility because it's quite new, so it's very beautiful. And they have some unique features for their residents that are quite nice. One is that they offer enrichment classes for their residents. The residents can learn about all kinds of things while they're there during these enrichment sessions. They have a beautiful facility. The rooms that they used for respite were lovely. They were like one-bedroom apartments. The kitchens in the entrance area of the room were a little bit cramped, so we weren't quite sure how that would work with a wheelchair or a walker. That was one concern we had about the rooms in that facility. But the dining area was lovely, and the menu looked like gourmet food. The chef was from Italy. We talked with a couple of residents, so that was helpful. Overall, it was a very nice facility, but they required a 30-day respite stay."

"Magnolia Ridge assisted living facility, located in Roanoke, Virginia, is one of the smaller assisted living facilities that I have ever visited. According to their website, they only host 34 beds in the entire place. The benefit of having such a small facility is that each and every patient admitted gets much more attention and care than they would be able to at a larger assisted living facility. This truly sets Magnolia Ridge apart as one of the best assisted living facilities that one can hope to find themselves in. Not too long ago, I had a relative who was admitted to the facility. Due to health complications, he was no longer able to care for and maintain himself, so an assisted living facility was one of the last options available. Due to the small size of the facility, he was able to receive the care and attention that he deserved, and up until his passing he was very happy to be staying at such a comfortable, homely place. "
