"We toured the Sunshine Assisted Living in Alexandria. They gave us a tour of the whole assisted living community. I liked the layout of it and the distance from where we lived. The staff there were very kind and polite. The coordinator was very nice and explained everything that my wife and I talked to her about. The dining area was nice and clean. The staff showed me where they dine, the playing area, and the salon where they do their hair, which was nice. You have to go underground and off the street to park. Other than that, I think it appears nice. It's also right on the corner, so you can't miss it."

"My mother moved into Sunrise at Mount Vernon, and it is great. I've thoroughly enjoyed the staff. They're great people and very caring. I have great relationships with the staff. They've gone through a couple of executive directors. I don't know the current executive director as well as I knew the old one, but they seem to be constantly moving forward, so I've appreciated everything they've done. The food is pretty good. I'm a food person (a foodie), and I'm a trained chef, so I always look at it like I understand what things cost. I think they could be maybe a little bit more creative in their menu planning, but I don't know everything that goes on behind the scenes with their cost. I think their cleanliness is top notch; it's very good. The common areas are amenable, accessible, and well patrolled, and there are plenty of staff available. I have on occasion been there late at night, and I think there's a dramatic drop off in the number of staff versus residents after eight o'clock at night. I would prefer that ratio to have been a little bit better. There have been situations where I've gotten a call from somebody at eleven o'clock at night, and I can't communicate with them because I can't hear them or understand them. It's not always the best at night, but I think it's the best possible scenario overall, because during the day the staff there is phenomenal. I definitely think they could improve on their overnight staff, though. How many staff are available to care for people after the hours of nine or ten o'clock at night? I also think that they can improve upon the quality of individuals, and accessibility to the phone. After nine or ten o'clock at night it's very hard to reach anybody to get any answers."

"My mom is at Spring Hills Mount Vernon for memory care. So far, they have been a very caring community. My mother loves it there and we're glad we made the choice. We got one of the larger rooms for her. So, she's got a bedroom, a nice bathroom. She enjoys walking in the garden. She did a cooking class the other day so it gives her a chance to be social and have some fun. She seems to enjoy the food too. She has no complaints in that department."

"We settled on Sunrise of Springfield, and Mom has been very happy and satisfied since her move there. The place is excellent, and the services are very good and of high quality. My mother’s room and the amenities are outstanding. We are very pleased. I haven’t eaten there, but I was able to look at their menu, and I can say from all account the food quality is very good. With their activities, they have them posted with the time and where they will be taking place. My mother has enjoyed several of the activities. She has gone out for lunch a couple of times. She has met friends for bingo and bowling. "

"I got to tour Vitality Living Arlington. It's more geared to someone who can move around and be mobile, and that place isn't a fit for our needs. It was a great place. It's clean, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. It seemed like a great place for a family person who'd feel comfortable that their loved one would not fall. It was a very special place. The staff who gave the tour was an excellent person. She was on point with everything, and she really was informative on everything that was going on in the building. The suites were fine. You have to bring your own furniture. It was very comfortable. I had no qualms about it at all. It was a decent place. I thought that the dining area looked good, but I didn't eat there. The staff I dealt with was very respectful and good to me."

"I chose to visit Sunrise at Bluemont Park because it was in Arlington and I would like to live in Arlington. It was near my doctor. I liked the apartments pretty well. They had been updated and had a nice kitchen. They had a washer and a dryer in every apartment and the bathroom was updated. They didn't have much closet space. They had a nice dining room. They only serve one meal a day and the price was over my budget. The one-bedroom was $4,003 a month. But I liked it because it actually was in a park and they had a lot of walking trails. They had porches all along so people can sit outside. The people were nice. They seemed to know their business. "

"My dad moved into The Jefferson a few months ago. It's been great. It has lots of activities. So, he signed up for a lot of different clubs. He's connected with people and I feel it's been a huge improvement for him because he was living alone for 30 years. So, to now be with people is good for his mental health. He just seems a lot happier and he's more with it. I feel like he's sharper. So it's been great. My dad is in a one-bedroom, one-bath with a study, and it has a small balcony, and a lot of natural light. Each day when you look in the elevator, there's a full list of all the activities going on for the day. So they have things like swimming. They have a small swimming pool to do lap swimming or probably water aerobics. And then they have musicians who will come in and play. They have chair yoga. They bring in speakers to talk about things like I saw they had someone coming in to talk about a car-free diet. That means not driving so much. So, like how you could do urban design differently. They do trivia sometimes. They have a little pub that's in The Jefferson. So they have happy hour many nights. He's in a politics group. So they talk about politics once a week and he's in a theater group. So they do stage readings periodically. They have a schedule for the shuttles that will take you to the various grocery stores. And they also have a movie viewing room."

"I liked Rembrandt Assisted Living. It's a beautiful place like it is. I want her to go there, but that is something we can't afford. It was open and bright, and the residents were very cheerful and happy. I saw the caregivers that were there on staff helping, smiling, and encouraging the residents, whether it was helping them eat or helping them walk to the restroom. And the facility was just beautiful. It was decorated nicely and the staff was also very friendly towards me. Nobody was on their cell phone or anything like that. It seemed like a very loving atmosphere. They have personal training and physical therapy. The facility is nice and has a beautiful backyard for them to visit as well."

"I found the Paragon Assisted Living Potomac House Communities for my father. It's a group home. He moved in and he loves it -- the best place he's ever lived. This was perfect for him. The staff is great, my father feels very special there, it's very small, only eight residents, so it's very individualized. It's like they really care. He has the same, consistent people all the time. They have a chef who comes in every day and prepares the food. It's a brand-new facility, it's not even a year old. It's well-maintained. They clean the room every day. They have nice, big, open hallways. They have minimal activities, and they could probably do better for people who have the ability to do stuff. They're a great alternative to a bigger facility."

"I was able to see Prince of Peace I. They didn't have many amenities as far as common areas, it was just one little small TV. Although they have TVs in their rooms, it would be good for them to get out of their rooms and be in a common area with other residents. But there's not enough space for that. The staff members and employees were very welcoming, they went over a lot of things and asked a lot of questions about my grandmother, and they spoke about their specialties or their focus. They kind of specialize in dementia, so that was nice to hear. Whenever I call, they answered and were happy to answer any questions I had. They had a van that they use when they need to take the residents to places and stuff like that. But that's the only amenity that I remember them mentioning. They have physical therapy that comes to the house, but I didn't like that they didn't have nurses or a nurse onsite 24 hours. "

"We’ve placed my mother-in-law in Sunrise of Falls Church. It seems like a very nice facility. They have a number of different activities. I know they have a senior exercise class. They play bingo; they have music programs. They take the residents out for dinner. The dining area seems good. My husband has been there to eat personally, and he thinks the food is good. I wish her room was a little bit larger, but I think it’s perfect. It’s an adequate room; it’s nice and bright. Having a little refrigerator and a little entry way is nice. I’ve interacted with the staff. They’ve all been very helpful and nice. "

"We were greeted by Diana the minute we stepped into Henson Creek Assisted Living. She's the person that manages the day-to-day operations and she was very pleasant, very professional, very warm, and very caring. She was just an exceptional person. The facility was also exceptionally clean. They had several options in terms of rooms. The residents had made their rooms very personal. It was almost like they were at home. The open areas were very homey. In the dayroom, there were several people watching TV. Then there was another lady in a different day room doing puzzles. The dining area was very clean as well."
