"My parents are now residing at The Hearth at Castle Gardens. They've been very helpful, and they've gone beyond. When I'm asking them to do different things in there, they would take care of it. Of course, the storm didn't help things here for a few days, but they're finally getting back into running things the way they would normally run them. If you ask them something, they take care of it. My parents have only been there a week, and three days of that was when the storm hit. They have a lot of things on their agenda to do, so that's good. Right now, the food is okay. In three days, they had to have food brought to them because of the storm. They have a bigger kitchen in the room. They don't have to cook. The room is very clean. They clean the rugs, and they make sure they are clean. They painted and fixed things and did some things that I asked them to do. The staff have all been very nice. The building itself is very nice. They have everything they could want. The dining hall looks like a little dinette, which is cute. They have a gym room for them to do exercises, balance things, or games. They get together and play bingo once in a while."

"My father has been a resident of Elderwood Vestal ( formerly Brookdale East ) for over 7 years. I can't say enough good things about the staff and facility in general. For starters, many of the same staff that were there 7 years ago, are still there today including Director Colleen H. That speaks volumes about what a good facility it is. I worked in health care for over 30 years and have seen first hand the high rate of staff turnover. So it is reassuring to my family that our father's care is consistent. The staff have become like family to my Dad and our very large family. My Dad's room is bright and nicely decorated. The staff encourages residents to bring in personal belongings to make them feel more " homey ". The facility is clean, bright, and welcoming. The nursing care is also excellent. The food is good. Plus there are many activities to choose from daily. My Dad particularly likes the bus trips to Tioga Downs. Elderwood Vestal is definitely worth checking out if you are considering assisted living care for yourself or a relative!"

"The person who accommodated me during my tour at Sterling House of Ithaca was very nice and polite. The facility is very nice, and it also seemed to have very nice people. I have no problems with it, except that I'm just not quite ready to do this yet, but this facility would be a satisfactory place for me to go if I were ready. As far as I could tell the facility is kept clean and kept up well. "

The activities staff keep the residents engaged and provide and all round family atmosphere. I cannot say enough good about this facility. My mother was there over a year and I also was very present on a daily basis and saw much. "

"Sayre Health Center provides total care. Mother is in a private room and it's beautiful. It isn't just a nursing home, it's for rehabilitation and all sorts of things they have people in for. The Alzheimer's and dementia patients are right in with the regular population which is what I like because that keeps her more active and she will cope to these normal people as well. The food is pretty good. I've had the food myself. The staff is very good and very helpful as far as I can see. If anything happens, they always notify me immediately and if they can't get me they call one of my other brothers or my sister. They're very quick to respond. If I have a question, they call me back right away. They have cookies and coffee during the day. They also have a snack cart that comes around in the afternoon. They quite often have popcorn night or movie night with popcorn. They really do a nice job, I think, much better than the other place that we were in but with a different setup. They have lots of groups that come in for singing, band concerts, choral concerts and country western bands. They have trips to the casino, trips to the mall and trips to see the Christmas lights. They have bingo and book club. I like the place. My whole family is quite happy with it. "

"My mother-in-law was at Ideal Senior Living for a couple of years. She went to their assisted living, and she really loved it. She was elderly; she was 98. I couldn’t take care of her anymore at home because I was working, and I was getting called at home because she was falling. The assisted living was great. We would go where they had a beautiful dining room. The relatives and friends were able to go and eat with her whenever they wanted to. We just had to let them know so they could make reservations. The staff was great. They were very nice and very helpful there. They would help her with her bed. I still continue to do her washing. Everyone had their own little room, their own bath, and you could have a TV, and she had a phone. But if they wanted to, they could go out into this living area where a lot of the people went out and sat; they could converse with each other. They also had a recreation director who came in and did things for them. They would take them out for church services. Then she had gallbladder problems, and at that point she was very sick. She went into the hospital and they did the surgery. She didn’t bounce back at all. She had to give up the apartment. We moved her out of there, and she went across the street to their nursing home. "We visited The Pavilion at Vestal Park. We only saw assisted living there. It was very clean, very friendly, and had a lot of activities going on. The rooms were a good size. The bathroom with a walk-in shower was very nice. The administration there for the assisted living was very good. The staff was very good and they interacted well with the patients, and they were very forthcoming with information. They have a doctor on staff, too, all day. They have therapy, and they have single rooms."

"The staff at The Barton Adult Home are very caring and treat my mother with the special attention that she requires as she is a Dementia patient. The director believes in keeping the residents active which benifts them both physically and mentally. She is taken outside whenever the weather permits and every effort is made to make her life safe and comfortable. I truly felt blessed the day that I placed my mother in their care. "

"We toured the assisted living at Hilltop Campus. I also attended a party there for somebody that was in the nursing care on a different occasion. The tour was nice, the facility looked clean and well-taken cared of. I didn't see a lot of the patients. I saw the whole thing. I think they've had activities posted on a wall with a list of things. They have rooms where you can have a party for your family member. I went for my husband's family member, they had like a birthday party and they gathered in a room and brought in food. It looks like they had outdoor areas where they can sit. During the tour, it was good. When we went to the party, we got lost and we had to walk through residential or some skilled nursing areas and it definitely felt like we were in a hospital. When he came to the party, his clothes were dirty, like he had food and stuff on them, I guess that happens, but in general it was okay."

"I have worked as a volunteer at the Bethany Village, and I find it to be a fine place for senior assisted living. It has a clean, quiet, and professional atmosphere. Throughout my time in the facility, I never saw any sort of abuse or neglect committed against the residents: the staff took such matters very seriously. Occasionally, I would sense a lack of compassion among the staff, but as a whole, the residents were treated with care. The nurses knew virtually all the residents by name, and when I asked the residents if they liked it at Bethany Village, the response was, as a whole, quite positive. Many times a month they are taken to fun off-site places, such as museums and the like, for some time away from Bethany Village. After volunteering in Bethany Village, I would recommend it to anyone in Horseheads who is looking for an assisted living home. "

"I visited Elizabeth Church Manor with my son and daughter-in-law and loved it. Both of the buildings were so clean, so neat, and so welcoming. I wish I could move in there tomorrow. There were several shared rooms, but at 82, I don’t want to share a room with anyone. They were all clean, spacious, and neat. I kept asking my son, “Have you filled the application yet? Have you heard anything?” because if I had my way, I’d be there this minute. The staff was very nice, but I didn’t have that much contact because we went there and took a tour on a Sunday. The people I saw were very nice. There was a chapel, which impressed me, and, as far as I know, it was available for people to go in anytime of the day. I do a lot of needlework and there was a whole room set up with large tables not too far from the room that I hope I will be getting. I was very impressed. "

"I have looked at Longview a couple times. First on a official tour and second was a surprise visit. The facility is beautiful and clean clean clean. This does not happen usually. lots of things to do, transportation available. They have an Enhanced assisted living section completed in summer 2011. Would love to place mom here but need to get her insulin adjusted. Consulting with the doctor. "

"Smiths Personal Care Home was a lovely little home. The staff are very friendly and seem to really care. They would frequently sit and talk to the patients and families. The home is small but that allows for more time with each patient. The town the home is in is very small and felt very homey and friendly. My mother was well taken care of here and never had a complaint. She enjoyed the activities that they had.The patients were bathed regularly and laundry was washed on a daily basis. A piano was frequently used in the living area and alot of patients would sit around it as it was played. The home was very clean and smelled pretty good. The home was also modern and had a large tv for patient enjoyment. The food here is good and freshly made.Pets were brought in for the theraputic benefits for all patients. Overall this is a very nice little home and I would recommend it to others. "

"I am a currently going to school as an LPN and was required to volunteer at an assisted living home in our area. I visited The Good Shepherd Fairview home in Binghamton, New York. The nursing staff was quick to introduce themselves and show me around. The residents seemed to be happy in their environment, playing games, socializing, and watching television. Although their facilities did not seem up to date, everything was well taken care of and clean. The rooms seem to have been spacious and comfortable. I did have the opportunity to eat lunch there, and I would say that is the only thing I would not give 5 stars for! As mentioned before, the nursing staff seems to care about their residents and take good care of them. Overall it seemed to be a nice play to live and be employed at. I would recommend The Good Shepherd Fairview to anyone who asks. "

"I was very skeptical of my grandmother going into any sort of facility. I am of the mindset that these facilities are often not run properly and the staff is not competent. That being said, I was pleasently surprised with Bridges Cornell Heights. My grandmother is not in the worst shape, but her mind has gone somewhat over the years. But she is mobile, which helps. The facility is "nice" meaning that it's not overly luxurious but it is certainly pleasent. The biggest concern I had for her was the staff and this is where my expectations were really blown away. I found the staff to be extremely competent and most importantly, kind and understanding. They were patient with with her always even when she had no clue where she was. Overall, it changed my opinion of facilities like this and I have no direct concerns for her well being. "
