"This home is very run down and understaffed. All of the people staying at the facility are mentally (and mostly physically) disabled. The staff spends a majority of their time ignoring outbursts from some patients, which in turn upsets other people living in the facility. The staff also posts on some patients facebooks calling them a "bum" and other weird things that upset their family members- which I then have to hear about if I run into them during visiting. I've also seen staff updating MY family member's facebook page saying she "..is feeling crappy today." My family member is 78 years old, disabled, and mentally retarded- she cannot talk or communicate, this is unacceptable!!! Is this a joke to someone?! Because it is not funny to us! The staff is very unprofessional and does not have much training. I only hope that some day the funds coming into this organization will funnel into fixing up this particular Groton facility and also into proper training for staff rather than hiring young adults for minimum wage. I am unsure of how the other houses operate, they have several in the community, but from what I've seen in this one- I would never wish a family member to come here ever again. "

"About 4 yrs. ago, it became necessary to find assisted living help for our mother, who was 82 y/o. She had been recently diagnosed w/COPD, had oxygen needs 24/7, also with early onset dementia and needing help. I looked at 3 different homes and went back to the Bixby Home, because the proprietor was so helpful. Mom was a Veteran of WWII, raised 4 kids in the 50's & 60's by herself and worked hard all her life. We wanted "a home", where people cared - not just a place to put Mom, so we wouldn't be bothered. We found not only kind & caring staff, but those who truly cared about her well-being. My youngest brother was there, every day that she was. He even took his therapy Golden Retriever, which not only our Mom, but all the residents loved. I saw this staff work with many residents who didn't have families in the area or had out-lived their family members. The residents were provided a clean, safe & caring environment, 3 home-cooked meals & snacks when they wanted, as well as hot coffee, tea or other beverage if desired. In the time our Mom was a resident there - we saw the summer picnics, a fall camp outting in a local park, the Christmas tea & several other seasonal celebrations. The staff loved our Mom & she loved them. She fell & broke her hip in December '10, the staff on duty were wonderful to her & she often shared how one of the 3-11 aides had gotten Mom her pillow, placed it under Mom's head and the aide got right down on the floor, next to her to comfort her while one of the male residents ran to get help. After her surgery & week stay in the hospital, she could not wait to get back to the Bixby Home & was welcomed by the staff & residents when she returned. She never recuperated from her hip fracture, but was cared for by hospice, right in her room. The staff cared for her as if she were a member of their own family. The morning she died, the staff cared for us too - bringing us coffee, donuts and being there for moral support. Mom loved the Bixby Home & we were at peace knowing she was safe and cared for. We are most grateful to Debbie and all her wonderful staff for providing our Mom, Betty, with tender loving care in her last years. PS I am an RN of 40 yrs. & a nurse practitioner of 11 yrs., so I know bad, OK or BEST. The Bixby Home is one of the BEST! "

"My grandpa has been a resident of the facility for the last 9 months and I can't express enough how grateful I am for the care he has received in those months. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly and the rehab team exceeds all of my expectations. "

"This is listed as an Assisted living center. It is an Adult home for independent living. The aides are PCA's not ceritifed CNA' or HHA's. They do assist with shower and dressing when needed, The medication is given at appropriate timing for each resident. Nursing staff is only available during weekdays. On call nursing if an emergency comes up. Aides are not allowed to lift a resident if they have fallen or slid out of a chair. Either EMT's or ambulance are called in. This is not reassuring for me. This is very costly as my mom has had EMT 4 times this year. "

"We toured The Courtyards @ Bethany Village. We saw a memory unit there, but they require certain ambulatory abilities, and my mother isn't appropriate for that. She just isn't up to it physically. The room would be probably just the right thing. It's a very good size for a single bed. It's got nice, covered space and drawers. The bathroom is very handy. It's relatively small, and it's not a double room, but it would have everything that my mother would have needed there. We're also glad it did not have a kitchenette, because, in memory care, we wouldn't have trusted her with anything that's heated up. So, it's good that there's no small kitchenette; that would have just been inappropriate. They have a courtyard, and they are located next to a big natural area and an old orchard. They've got a pond, so the landscape looked very inviting. We didn't get to go out and around, but they said that they did have outdoor paths. Melanie, our tour guide, was very pleasant and very understanding of what we were looking for. She described all the amenities and had whatever papers we'd need right away. She was just very gracious and welcoming. We were there at 3:00 PM, so it wasn't a mealtime. I believe they have three meals. We saw the dining room, and it was very lovely. It's a very nice dining room. The smaller rooms for puzzles and stuff were very nice. Everything was very clean. The entryway was inviting. Each unit was relatively small, I think it was 15 rooms per section. I was just picturing mother coming out and looking down the hall, you could see the end of the hall was a window. So, I just got the sense that if I were a memory person, it didn't seem overwhelming that it was going to be an unending hallway."
