"I was very impressed with the overall appearance of Bickford of Iowa City. I think that's important that the first time you walk in seeing that everything was clean, and the residents that I saw at the time looked pleasant. I was there around lunchtime. I got to see how those services were being brought out to the residents. I was also given ample opportunity with the director of the facility, and she was very accommodating and answered all my questions. I got to see some of the actual units that were available if I would have my parents moved into that location. Overall, it presented very well. I thought it would have been a possible good solution for my parents, but things have significantly changed with my mom's situation where her level of care exceeds what an independent living or even an assisted living facility could handle. They had a big social board up on the wall. It showed that they were having activities every day for the residents, so it was clear right there like a calendar that's available. I was able to view one of their activity rooms. They had some games they were doing like a chair activity. They had like a little puzzle area set up, they had like a little library set up, they had like an activity area set up for them there. Just knowing that those calendars were present and that things were going on every day, I thought that was important. The food looked really good, and it smelled good. The staff said that they have a chef that comes in. I was able to view the meal plan right there, it was like a menu, and in my opinion, it looked healthy, and it looked like it gave the residents diverse options of food to have. And the fact that it's just warm and cooked daily, I think that's important."

"My mom moved in at Bickford of Marion the first week of December. We chose it because of the staff and the location. They've been patient and good with her in helping her to transition. The facility is nice and clean. It's a circle, so you can't get lost. They have a salon, gardening, and a courtyard. So far, I've got no issues whatsoever. They are located near restaurants, but it's about 20 minutes away from a hospital. There's urgent care across the street, though."

"When we were visiting community living facilities, we appreciated the fact that the Brown Deer Community Relations Coordinator realized that time was needed to weigh the lifestyle changes and benefits of community living. She checked in periodically to see if we had questions, but never tried to hurry the decision. We appreciated her friendliness and patience throughout the decision process, which was a key factor in choosing Brown Deer Place."

"I found Melrose Meadows Retirement Community to be very nice, light, and pleasant. One of the nicest things was the pool. The dining room and everything that was presented was very nice. The staff was very helpful and gave me all the information that I requested. I saw a studio room and saw that I would have to bring my own furniture in. "

"This is a top notch facility and probably one of the best for the type of care delivered. The kindness, caring and understanding of each individual resident is not often found in other assisted living facilities. Attention to detail and the ability to work with each individual family member in the care of their loved one is truly quite amazing. "

"Oaknoll Retirement Residence is a top notch facility. There is a waiting list for the facility and I think that says a lot. People can't wait to get into the facility because it's known as the best in the area. On our local radio station you here a famous radio personality (and senior citizen) Dottie Ray talk about the highlights of the facility and based on my experiences she is spot on. Everyone is very friendly, the facility is very clean, and I feel like my grandmother is in good hands. Before we made our decision for our grandmother we visited a number of facilities in the local area. There were some very questionable places and once we visited Oaknoll we knew that we had found the best place. They offer shuttle service and my grandmother loves this feature because she likes to visit the Sycamore Mall and the Coral Ridge Mall. She has met a number of friends and she feels like she has a great network of people to talk with and take part in activities with as well. "

"The facility was very nice, but I found the atmosphere very sad and dull. My grandpa had to stay there for some time because he had gotten surgery and my grandma could not take care of him. I saw the food that he got to eat for lunch and it just looked and smelled really really bad. Also, the whole place is so gray and dull, the walls are white, the carpeting in gray, there are no posters anywhere, I don't know why anyone would want to stay there. Pets are not allowed, and I thought that that was so sad because my grandpa loves his cats and he was not even able to see them. When I went to visit, they had to check who we were and it took forever to make the nurses accept us into the facility. They were really really slow and no at all active. the room he stayed in was nice, the bed looked comfortable, and it had one chair in it, so my grandma could sit down when she went to visit him. his room also had a nice tv propped on the wall, so he could watch his favourite shows. "We moved into the Legacy Retirement Community. I like the apartment that they had to offer us, and I like the personnel. They're very helpful and accommodating. The people who live here are very welcoming. They're good people, and it's a good place to live. The food is very good for the most part. They have a wide variety of activities. I don't participate a lot because I'm also taking care of my husband. They're good and fun. They also take people on outings. They have a lot of things going on here at the center. The facility is very nice. They're well-maintained and clean. And right now, they're in the middle of doing an update. They're building a bistro and trying to keep things updated. It's very welcoming, and they allow us to have pets."

"My mother is in Mayvil, and it's been OK as far as I can tell. They have bingo, and on Presidents' Day, they had some people acting like presidents. They serve three meals a day and they provide snacks at 8:00 or 9:00. They do her laundry and help her with showering and getting dressed if she needs it. It's pretty clean, but they could do a better job cleaning inside the rooms."

"I chose Amana Retirement Community Lakeview Village. The price was much better and I didn't have to make a deposit. The staff was very good and it has a very good reputation. There's nursing home care, independent living and assisted living. I can choose from those depending on the need that I have at the time that I enter there. I inquired about independent. The rent was very reasonable and affordable for independent living and for nursing home care. A large private room in the nursing home wing was 235 for a daily rate. They had an exercise room, a recreation room and activities. I'm familiar with the administrator and I feel good about her. Everything is well done and taken care of there."

"My mom moved into The Gardens of Cedar Rapids. It's ten minutes from my house and from my grandchildren, and that was a big thing. If she would have to go into assisted living, she does not need to move from the apartment that she's in, and that was a big plus. They have a beautician that comes in by appointment. They also have a bath technician by appointment, where you can have a spa-type thing that my mom was really excited about. They have activities that you can go to. They have a community area where they have happy hour. They provide music and entertainment for the residents. They did some special things for Valentine's Day, which I thought was very thoughtful. They have a big area with a TV and a fireplace where families can meet. They provide three meals a day, and my mom seems to be enjoying the meals. They provide a cleaning service and laundry. The cable is included in the price. The staff has just been terrific. They've been very friendly and helpful. It's a very nice-looking facility, inside and out."

"We went to Higley Mansion for my mom. Higley was very nice. It was an older building, but it was still very nice and well kept. The girl that took us on a tour was friendly and helpful. They did have activities going on. They were playing bingo. As far as I can see, the facility was very clean. There were no odors. The size of it was smaller, so there was a closer and more one-on-one type sense about it. Overall, I was impressed with it. It would have been my second choice for my mom; however, it was more for a short-term stay. "

"My father was in this facility for a few years. He eventually had to move to a full care facility due to his health and lack of ability to walk. I was impressed with this facility from the moment I walked in. It was clean and airy. An attendant was always present near the front door and just down the hall from the residents. The cafeteria was also very clean and the food wasn't bad. They would often have special events like Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners plus celebrate the residents birthdays. My father's room was nice. It was always well maintained and clean. He really enjoyed his stay there. The nurses and attendants were always available for him, day or night. They were very attentive and friendly. Even the head of the facility would visit him from time to time. Overall, it was a good experience for dad, and he hated to leave. I highly recommend this facility. "
