"Brighton is its own little community"”a nice factory town, with plenty of amenities. This is one of the more modern-looking care facilities in the area"”nice and clean on the outside. There is also an covered sitting area with rattan chairs and tile floor. On the inside, the common area has a large glass birdcage that's a focal point in the den, with fireplace and books and a desk. The décor provides a homey feel. The communal dining room is elegantly set with tablecloths and cloth napkins"”and the meals are fair to good. Lots of activities are offered, including a range of arts and crafts and a cooking club. The staff has a lot of interaction with residents because the facility is rather small, with room for 60; the staff to resident ration is 3 to 1, which is quite good. Assessments are done continually, which is a rather rare benefit. There is also a doctor who visits once a month, but no dedicated memory care is available. Cost of housing starts at $2,800 a month for a studio; $3,000 for one bedrooms. Beyond that, the care is customized per person--$88 per month for shower assistance, for example, so added care can mount up to be quite costly. Sterling House accepts Medicaid, Medicare, longterm care insurance and private pay to cover costs. In fact, the biggest drawback for many potential residents may be the price. For others, it might be their mental health too, since memory care is not specifically offered here; while it might be possible for a resident requiring memory care to stay, the additional in-home personal care would be costly. -This reviewer, Ruth Hillesheim, is a social worker with extensive nursing home experience, with an emphasis on Alzheimer's and dementia care.
