San Pedro is a community within Los Angeles, located between Manhattan Beach and Long Beach and best known as the busiest port in the country. Approximately 59,600 people reside there, with around 9,600 being aged 60 and over. San Pedro’s above-average senior population suggests it has a lot to offer the age group. The below-average health care costs will certainly be a factor, as will the excellent climate and large number of Medicare-registered physicians. Being a port town, homages to maritime life are everywhere, such as the Battleship IOWA Museum and the Point Fermin Lighthouse, while the ocean views from Angels Gate Park are also popular.

Assisted living communities in San Pedro typically charge $5,000 per month for quality accommodation and supportive care, which is average for California. These facilities enable seniors to enjoy more of their later years by ensuring their rooms are cleaned regularly by housekeepers, meals prepared by chefs and medications managed by staff trained for the task.

This guide reveals the costs of assisted living and other types of senior care in San Pedro and Southern California. It also considers the advantages and disadvantages of living in the port town and lists some senior-friendly resources.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in San Pedro

The California Department of Social Services, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for monitoring, regulating and licensing assisted living facilities in California. It has the authority to make announced inspections on licensed facilities to ensure they’re complying with the conditions of their licenses and to revoke licenses from those that aren’t.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in San Pedro

  • According to Sperling’s Best Places, the mean cost of living in San Pedro is 64.9% more than the national average. The community is also more costly, on average than the typical Californian city. However, this isn’t the case with health costs, which are lower than the mean figures for the state and the country.
  • Crime in San Pedro is slightly above average. The community is in the 32nd percentile for safety, which means 32% of U.S. cities experience more crime. The safest locations in San Pedro tend to be in the southwest, with those in the direction of Terminal Island being less safe. Seniors concerned about crime may be pleased to know that many assisted living facilities include surveillance cameras and other layers of security, such as staff on-site 24/7.
  • Little Company of Mary Medical Center is the only hospital within the San Pedro community. However, many others are only minutes away, such as the South Bay Medical Center and Torrance Medical Center. The community is also home to a significant number of Medicare registered physicians working in multiple fields, including family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry and optometry.
  • San Pedro’s climate is ideal for seniors. In January, temperatures average at a comfortable 47 degrees, while in summer, the ocean air cools the heat, averaging at a pleasant 78 degrees, which means seniors aren’t subjected to extremes of weather. There’s no snow, so no slippery sidewalks or drives, and rainfall averages at 13 inches annually. San Pedro’s seniors also enjoy approximately 73 more sunny days than the average U.S. city, which gets 205.
  • San Pedro’s water quality is slightly below the U.S. average. However, air quality is noticeably better. This is mainly due to the community’s location beside the Pacific Ocean. The community also excels at dealing with the causes of pollution, scoring an impressive 92/100 for its contributions towards the EPA’s Superfund program, which aims to respond rapidly to environmental emergencies and clean up contaminated land.
