"We went to The Reserve at Thousand Oaks yesterday. We wanted to see that one in person. What we liked about it is the size of the campus. My father-in-law is 90 years old and we would consider him pretty independent at this point. He doesn't require all the services but they went in-depth on what some of those are. What we like about it is the way that he had a balcony or a terrace, if you will, that he could open a door to and sit outside. He's not like being closed-in in a room. We also liked seeing the socialization. We met one woman that has only been there for 2 weeks and she seemed quite engaged in some conversation and laughing when Dylan, the one who assisted us, introduced her as their newest resident. I asked her if she came there because she knew people and she said she didn't know anybody. That made me feel comfortable knowing that he's going to go in there probably like the first day of school, a little bit scared and he doesn't know anybody. I think once he opens up and starts socializing, he's going to find it very different. The other thing that we liked was their dining room because it's a restaurant theme. They showed us their menu. My father-in-law doesn't eat at home so I think he's going to like that a lot. That will also provide more socialization. They had daily specials, maybe they change that every 2 days. They also have a seasonal menu where they can order whatever they want. If they want to order pancakes morning, noon, and night, they can do that. We toured the gym where they offer physical therapy if you would like to have one on one. They have a library of books and we saw people here and there sitting and reading. Dylan took us down to the theater so they have movie nights. One thing that just dawned on me in the room that we liked was they have a button for check-in. They have to hit that button before 10:00 a.m. and they have to hit that button around 5:00, 6:00 p.m. when they get back to their room. If they don't hit that button, then they go and check on them. They keep tabs on them and they've got, as I call it, a command center. They're right on top of where their residents are. We asked about emergencies and how they evacuate everybody. He told us that they now have a contract with a charter bus company, that they will get everybody out immediately, and that they have drills since that fire up at the Reagan Library. It was after that that they put a lot of thought and created some protocols on how to get the residents out of there. They also have independent living and you can tell that they're independent based on the apartments. They've got their vehicles at their apartment and all that. My father-in-law will be in their assisted living. They do not provide memory care, so if at some point, he would require that, we would possibly have to move him. Everybody was very, very attentive to their residents, very caring, and very personalized. We watched a whole group coming into the restaurant when we were leaving because it was dinnertime, and they were calling them all by name, helping them to the table, and just very caring."

"My mother moved into the memory care here. The staff is very engaging, very nice, and helpful. I had dinner and lunch there; the food is good, chef prepared, and includes seafood, chicken, and sandwiches. Toiletries are provided, except for shampoos, plus laundry, housekeeping, and meals and drinks. They really have their eyes on my mom, and they placed a bracelet that will sound off whenever she is close to the door; they asked our permission for that."

"Vista at Simi Valley has been transformed. My friend's mother has lived there for several months and she is raving about the place. She tells me that, since new management took over several months ago, the care is superb, food is great, activities plentiful. Apparently, better than ever. I've stopped by there several times and always received a gracious welcome from their staff. Sat in the new living room and looked at the models, which are beautiful. A+ rating in every way. "

"We chose Sage Mountain Senior Living for my mom, she's moving to their assisted living before June 30th. We've toured it, it looks modern, the staff is helpful, and I saw a studio apartment. I like the size of the room, it was wide enough to accommodate someone in a wheelchair. The bathroom door, the bathroom itself, all could accommodate someone in a wheelchair except the sink. They showed a patio area, a theater, the gym, a massage room, quite a few other things."

"We selected Oakmont of Simi Valley for my father. I found it to be very friendly. It's brand new, so it's very clean. The people are very nice, caring, and professional. They had good-sized apartments and they had restaurants, a fitness center, a place where you can get your hair done, a movie theater, an activities room, and a library. They have everything my dad needed. It's a good size apartment and brand new, so everything's clean, new carpet, new appliances. The facilities are brand new. They gave us a calendar of all the activities and they went over the calendar, what's available, and how frequently. They let us eat in the restaurant for free to try their meals. The staff during the tour was wonderful, very friendly, worked with us, and answered all of our questions. I went by myself, then I took my father and we went on another tour. We wanted to make sure before I brought my father that it was the place that I liked because I didn't want to bring him to something that I didn't like. I was pleased with everyone. I know they're brand new, but even the people who give you the medications were a family. The people who work at the front desk remembered us already. They knew my dad by name. They're still working on getting a better cook, but they have promised they would look into it and try to make sure that they make the improvements based on comments that they've received from us as well as other people."

"I had put a deposit down at Varenita of Simi Valley, and I was in the process of getting the paperwork done. My husband had dementia, but he just went downhill all of a sudden when I was getting ready to place him. Overall, I like the feeling of this community. It was very nice and comfortable, and the people were very nice to work with. The person in charge of the senior memory care was very nice. He seemed to care about the people living there. He made sure they exercised, and he talked to them. He's very nice to them. I felt like the people were comfortable there, and they were happy. They had activities all the time. If I went there, I would like it there. The rooms were good, too. They're nice-sized."

"Sunrise was very nice. We made an unexpected visit, and they gave us a really nice tour and showed us around. We went up to the Alzheimer’s unit, and we saw all the people in three different groups all doing something different. It seemed very pleasant. The people were very pleasant. The rooms were nicely laid out. There were two to a room, but it was almost like a private room the way they had been set up. It was very bright, and the grounds were very pretty. They had a whole program of activities that they did in a week. What was nice about them was they would work with us financially, too. "
