I felt that it was a mistake hiring anyone. Their employees could have been much more aware of covid policies, and I needed more guidance than what I was given.

Edmond Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Edmond:

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

Address:  PO Box 25352, Oklahoma City, OK 73125
Phone Number: (405) 521-3444

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps Oklahoma residents cover the cost of their home energy bills. The program is open to low-income seniors and is made up of two schemes. The Regular Energy Assistance Program (REAP) makes one payment per fiscal year to cover heating and cooling bills, and the Energy Crisis Assistance Program (ECAP) helps those who currently have no energy supply or are at risk of disconnection.

Oklahoma Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: Oklahoma Department of Commerce, 900 N. Stiles Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73104
Phone Number: (405) 815-6552

The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low-income households, including homeowners and long-term tenants, reduce their utility bills by making the property they live in more energy-efficient. The program funds the cost of a number of home improvements, including wall insulation, loft or attic insulation and caulking. The Weatherization Assistance Program is open to all low-income households, but the elderly receive priority.

Homestead Exemption and Valuation Freeze

Address: Oklahoma County Assessor, 320 Robert S. Kerr Avenue #313, Oklahoma City, OK 73102
Phone Number: (405) 713-1200

The homestead exemption is a $1,000 exemption taken off the assessed value of an individual’s primary home, reducing their property taxes. To qualify for the exemption for a given year, the individual must be the homeowner and reside in that property on the 1st January of that financial year. The Senior Valuation Freeze locks the assessed value of the property for homeowners aged 65 and older, helping reduce the risk of their property tax bills increasing year on year, even if their property appreciates in value.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
