Neighborhood Service Center

The Neighborhood Service Center is a Talbot County nonprofit group that provides services and assistance to low-income and elderly residents. It equips seniors with tools to be self-sufficient. Among its many services is the Emergency Food Pantry, which provides nutritious food to income-eligible households. It can also help with access to the Electric Universal Service Program, the Rental Allowance Program and the Emergency Services Program, among others. 

Accessible Homes for Seniors

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community offers deferred zero percent interest 30-year loans and grants to seniors to improve their homes’ accessibility. To be eligible, Maryland residents must be over 55 years of age and have a structurally sound home. They also have to meet income requirements. A range of improvements is covered. These may include installing grab bars and railings, widening of doorways and installing ramps.

Brooklets Place, a Talbot County Senior Center, runs the Meals on Wheels service. Meals on Wheels is a national nonprofit that has been providing nutritious meals to homebound seniors in their homes for over 60 years. Meals are delivered to the senior’s home three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) by volunteers. There is a small charge to cover the cost of meals.

Maryland Energy Assistance Program

The Maryland Energy Assistance Program is part of the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program helps eligible residents heat and cool their homes. There is an income test for eligibility. The benefit is a grant that is paid directly to the energy provider.
