New Orleans has over 390,000 residents, with 14.1% being age 65 and older. Seniors can explore the local history and culture. The Garden District is home to St. Charles Avenue, a major leg of the Mardi Gras route, and many 19th-century, single-story cottages and mansions with Greek-style architecture and lavish English-style gardens. While there are plenty of shopping and fine-dining opportunities in the Garden District, other districts, such as the French Quarter, also have vintage shops and restaurants with their own unique charm. History buffs can enjoy the plethora of museums, including the National World War II Museum, featuring immersive exhibits and an expansive collection of personal narratives, and Ogden Museum of Southern Art, which celebrates Southern art and artists throughout the years.

According to the Genworth Cost of Care 2020 Survey, the average cost of both homemaker and home health aide services are $3,909, which is significantly lower when compared to the national averages of $4,481 for homemaker and $4,576 for home health aide services.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the New Orleans area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

New Orleans Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in New Orleans:

New Orleans Council on Aging (NOCOA)

Address: 2475 Canal Street, Suite 400, New Orleans, LA, 70119
Phone Number: (504) 888-5880

The New Orleans Council on Aging (NOCOA) can connect seniors with home care services and transportation. The agency also provides a full list of seniors centers located throughout the New Orleans area, connecting seniors with daily recreational activities, wellness programs and group outings to local attractions. Hot meal programs offer low-cost congregate and home delivery meal options, with both options costing about $7.

Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)

Phone Number: (504) 827-7843

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) partners with local agencies across the state, including the New Orleans Council on Aging, to provide one-on-one counseling and assistance to seniors with Medicare and their caregivers. Beneficiaries can learn more about coverage options and better understand changes to the Medicare program through phone calls or face-to-face meetings.

National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP)

Address: 2475 Canal Street, Suite 400, New Orleans, LA 70119

Provided by the New Orleans Council on Aging, the program coordinates its efforts with other providers to give seniors the level of personal care they need. This can include offering information about caregiving services and connecting them with four hours of in-home respite care performed by qualified professionals to give primary caregivers a break and peace of mind. Material aid (such as adult incontinent items) is also available on a limited basis.

SeniorRx Program

Administered by the New Orleans Council on Aging, the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) assists seniors with providing free or discounted prescription medications through the SeniorRx Program, depending on their income level. The program can also help individuals apply for other government programs they may qualify for, including Medicaid, Medicare and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Senior Companion Program (SCP)

Address: 2475 Canal Street, Suite 400, New Orleans, LA 70119
Phone Number: (504) 821-4121 ext. 114

As part of Americorps Seniors, the Senior Companion Program is a volunteer-based program that provides in-home assistance and personal care to seniors who need help with daily tasks and home management. This includes light chores and meal preparation, as well as providing respite for home health aides. Volunteers must be age 55 and older and participate in pre-service training.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
