It’s difficult to express how helpful LiveGood was to me. Owner Oniika and those in her charge took care of my mother like she was their own family for about a year before she passed away. My mom was in various stages of dementia during this time, and I live in another state. I relied on this group of people to tend to her medication needs, meal prep, groceries, light housekeeping, and even help her take care of her little dog. I was in near daily communication with them, and am so grateful for all the work they did for us. By the end they felt like family. Oniika greatly respects elderly people, and has an understanding heart for those with dementia, in particular. The kindness she showed my mom in her most confused times was incredible. Hiring them was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Comforcare provides 24/7 care for my 91 year old neighbor (I have POA for Health and Finances). The staff arrives on time, and is very attentive to my neighbor’s needs. They make sure he stays clean, eats well, takes his meds, and check his blood sugar and blood pressure. They take him to all of his doctors’ appointments and also get his groceries. They keep the house and laundry clean and make sure he has what he needs. All the caregivers all are willing to do whatever is necessary. The agency has been very responsive to all of our requests. I would recommend the agency to anyone.

The care provided by Rejuvenating Concepts is very good. There were four or five that is located in the New Orleans area, and they are the first number that I called. I am very happy with the care. I’d say their attitude is fine. It is just when I have to be in court. Eighteen hours a day, I am able to be home with my husband, so I only need the caregiver about six or seven hours a day. She takes care of his pills, and she also clears out the refrigerator of things that are expired. She is a very good spirited woman. As for scheduling and billing, they do a fine job.

My family hired Three Caring Hands, LLC in July 2018. We went through a couple of different sitters. The checks were originally made out to the company. Later, it was requested that my mom just make out the checks to owner. We had to ask numerous times for copies of invoices and failed to get the very last invoice. When we hired this provider, it was advertised and stated that the sitter would be able to drive my mom to and from doctor’s appointments. The last sitter didn’t drive, so, she used Lyft to get my mom to and from her appointments. Through this process, the sitter obtained my mom’s credit card numbers. She was arrested for allegedly stealing and using my mom’s credit card numbers for her own personal use. This sitter was also found to have been lying down in another room instead of tending to my mother and allowed her boyfriend to use my mom’s vehicle without her permission. She was supposed to leave her shift at 6pm, however, when the next shift would get there, the daytime sitter was already gone. I would not recommend this sitting service to anyone.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in New Orleans, LA
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.
Free & Low-Cost Home Care Resources in New Orleans, LA
New Orleans seniors who want to live independently can get help through a number of free and low-cost programs, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Habitat for Humanity's A Brush With Kindness (AKWK) program provides affordable home repairs to low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners. Volunteers complete minor projects designed to improve home safety and accessibility, such as fixing damaged handrails, adding wheelchair ramps, repairing flooring and cleaning up yard waste. AKWK fees are based on the homeowner's income.
The New Orleans Council on Aging is a private nonprofit agency that acts as the Area Aging on Aging for the City of New Orleans and Orleans Parish. Seniors aged 60 and older can contact the NOCOA to learn about local free and low-cost services for older adults, including legal aid, congregate dining, and Medicaid and Medicare counseling.
Meals on Wheels is a low-cost nutritional support program for housebound seniors aged 60 and older, as well as their spouse. Anyone can apply for Meals on Wheels service regardless of their income, and program participants are asked to make a $7.21 donation toward the cost of each meal. Volunteer drivers conduct brief wellness checks while delivering meals.

Seniors who are unable to use the regular RTA bus service due to a temporary or permanent disability may be eligible to use RTA's paratransit service. This on-demand, shared-ride service operates 24 hours a day, and all paratransit vehicles are equipped with wheelchair lifts and other accessibility features.
Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
