Savannah Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Savannah:

Coastal Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging

Address: 1181 Coastal Dr. Southwest, Darien, Georgia 31305
Phone Number: (800) 580-6860

The CRCAAA acts as a service coordinator for seniors in the Savannah area. It may help seniors 60 years of age and older access in-home care services to supplement other forms of aid. Caregiver support, including facilitating access to respite services, is another area of focus for the CRCAAA. Additionally, the CRCAAA regularly conducts educational workshops and training sessions for seniors and caregivers.

Georgia Department of Veterans Service

Address: 1170 Shawnee St., Savannah, GA 31419
Phone Number: (912) 920-0214, ext. 2194

The GDVS works through field offices throughout Georgia. GDVS representatives counsel and advise the state’s military veterans. Seniors who served in any branch of the U.S. military can contact the GDVS for help understanding and accessing their earned benefits. The Savannah field office is located in the area’s VA outpatient clinic. The GDVS also has a division that helps with appeals.

Minor Home Repair Program

Address: 1375 Chatham Parkway, 2nd Floor
Phone Number: (912) 651-6926

Savannah’s Minor Home Repair Program offers grants and loans to homeowners who qualify under the program’s income limit. The funds can go toward site and exterior improvements, though this program is not meant for major renovations. The size and location of the home affect eligibility. Seniors may be able to access loans involving no- or low-interest and deferred payments.

Economic Opportunity Authority for Savannah-Chatham County, Inc.

Address: 618 West Anderson St., Savannah, GA 31415
Phone Number: (912) 238-2960

The EOA runs the Low Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program, which eases the financial burden of heating costs, and the nonprofit organization also administers a companion program that does the same for cooling costs. Seniors and low-income homebound individuals receive priority for both programs, which run seasonally. The EOA also offers a housing counseling service for clients facing foreclosure and a payee program for individuals who need help managing payments from the Social Security Administration.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
