The small, sunny coastal town of St. Augustine is considered to be the oldest city in the United States, and its Spanish cultural heritage shows. This historic town enjoys a humid subtropical climate of year-round warm weather whose humidity is moderated by ocean breezes. Despite its small size, St. Augustine doesn’t lack in attractions. The city has many lovely beaches, and its age means numerous historical sights, such as the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. There’s also no shortage of dining and nightlife options. St. Augustine’s 2019 U.S. Census estimated population is 15,415 residents. 22.7% of them are 65 years of age or older. This is much higher than the national average of 16.5%.

Despite the town’s small size, quality healthcare is easily accessible in St. Augustine. The most extensively equipped hospital in the city is Flagler Health Center. According to Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020 data, homemaker and home health aide services in St. Augustine and its surroundings cost $4,385 and $4,433, respectively. This is moderately cheaper than the respective U.S. national average prices of $4,481 and $4,576 for these same services.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for St. Augustine, so data for the closest city, Jacksonville, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Saint Augustine area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Saint Augustine Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Saint Augustine:

St. Johns County Council on Aging

Address: 180 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Phone Number: (904) 209-3700

The St. Johns County Council on Aging offers a plethora of social support and information services for elderly residents of the county and the city of St. Augustine. The Council’s programs help elders with home care, independent living and memory support services in the case of elders dealing with dementia. The Council on Aging also manages its own Transportation Department, which provides seniors with multiple specialized public transportation options to destinations in the county.

ElderSource

Address: 10688 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257
Phone Number: (888) 242-4464

Eldersource is the Area Agency on Aging & Disability for the Northeast Florida region and provides seniors and their caregivers with numerous referral, information and financial support resources. The organization can help seniors or their caregivers by giving them consultation sessions on state health insurance benefits, in-home services and long-term care options. The agency also offers direct caregiver support to eligible seniors and their families for more manageable independent living. This is done through the organization’s TCARE program and requires an assessment consultation with ElderSource staff. The agency operates a helpline phone number for seniors and their family members if they need advice on care and senior living options.

Meals on Wheels of St. Johns County

Address: 180 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Phone Number: (904) 209-3632

The Meals on Wheels program of St. Johns County is also run by the Council on Aging in coordination with its nonprofit partners. A licensed dietician monitors all meal menus prepared for this service, and each daily hot lunch delivery contains a fully balanced single meal. Anyone may apply, but elders who are 60 or older can apply for subsidized service on either a short-term or long-term basis. The staff of this Meals on Wheels program also check on the well-being of their clients to ensure that they’re not in emotional or physical distress.

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of the Elderly)

Address: 4040 Esplanade Way, Suite 270 Tallahassee, FL 32399-7000
Phone Number: 1-800-963-5337

SHINE is run by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs as the state’s health insurance counseling program for seniors and their families. This initiative offers elders free and unbiased advice about applying for and managing their health insurance benefits with programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and prescription assistance. Seniors who need to speak with a SHINE representative may do so through its helpline or via their regional Area Agency on Aging.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
