American House is like any typical assisted living in the United States--focused on profit, expensive, not enough staff, and extra charges for many things. It's very discouraging what over $6500 a month (after yearly increases) will get you these days. My person has been at the facility for a few years now. Whatever your intro pricing is, American House will raise prices by $500-1500 a month at least every year. Management puts profit first and staff and residents last. But what else is new when it comes to assisted living facilities. I rated staff as 2 not because of the staff themselves, because most of them would get four-five stars, but because management is unable to retain enough staff. PT told my person he needs to walk down the hallway and back every day, and he needs someone to walk with him, and Medicaid says this is included in the amount they pay the facility for his care, but staff barely have time to attend to resident daily needs, much less actually assist a resident with a goal. You also have to manage your own appointments--if you need someone to assist you with scheduling, you'll have to hire in someone private. As a dinner guest of a resident, you pay $8 for what amounts to a microwave meal. Sure, they follow whatever the national guidelines are and it is cooked on-premises, but whenever I eat there, I always feel like I've filled up on salt and sweetener, and I always eat real food when I get home. Since I'm barely a buck ten, that's saying a lot. My person there is supposed to be losing weight and has dietary restrictions, but staff always ask him if he wants dessert, and of course he takes it. As for staff, the facility never has enough and it isn't out of the ordinary for a single person to work 12+ hours a day 6-7 days a week. Over the holidays they had to call in staff from vacation because no else showed up. Sometimes management has to fill in to actually have "staff" present. The facility used to have two buses, but when American House took over they got rid of one. Twice a week the bus is reserved for medical appointments. They've only had to cancel once in a few years because the driver got sick and they had no one to fill in. The current driver is consistently on time and has a great attitude. I don't know how many fun activities the bus is used for--I've only heard of one recently. But in general, AH has an excellent activities coordinator who has really brought a fun atmosphere into the community, and they have in-house activities regularly. They recently installed automatic front doors, but all of the doors to the courtyards are still heavy manual doors. I've never seen anyone in the courtyards though many of the residents congregate outside the main doors when the weather is nice. The Wi-Fi quality tanked when American House took over from Elmcroft. The parking lot has ample spaces, including handicapped spaces, and the dumpster has always been well-maintained, even if excessively full (it doesn't stink up the parking lot). The facility has a generator and a red outlet in every room. Each room has recessed foot lighting near the entry, but no ceiling lights in the main room. You have to bring your own lamps. The windows can be opened to let in fresh air, but only if you have an aide do it for you. You can mount stuff on the walls (or have maintenance do it for you). When you're moving in or out, they let you use one of their carts. It's been impossible to find any city transportation that will go out there for the days the bus doesn't run. There's a piano in the lounge area and a covered seating area in one of the courtyards. I've never noticed the smell of stale urine. The maintenance crew does a great job of general upkeep. If you have to take a trip to the hospital, you'll have to find your own way back (or have the hospital take you back--I don't know how that works if you're not on Medicaid). American House won't assist you in getting back to the facility. I don't know anything about the memory care ward.

I visited this facility

American House Bristol was very, very clean. One thing I did like about it is that it had a courtyard. When you go inside the building, you have a nice lobby area and then you also have doors that go to a courtyard and they have sidewalks and tables out there and it's enclosed, if anyone has problems with wandering. You have to sign in and out when you're leaving the facility. You let them know that you're leaving and when you come back. The staff during the tour was very nice. The one bedroom was a little bit smaller than the other place, but it's also for assisted living and memory care. If I was at that point, the one-bedroom would be sufficient for me. It has a nurse medical staff 24/7. We looked at the dining area, which was very nice. Since it was an open house, they had beverages and snack food set up and all of those were very good, but I haven't had a meal at American House. The personnel was very nice. I did meet some of the department heads at the open house, and they were all very nice.

Memory Care has zero activities. Residents are kept in the kitchen. Do not believe what you are told. Medicine dosage error caused my mother to be admitted to the hospital with a blood glucose level of 20. From there she went downhill and ultimately passed away at a different facility. The last few days of her life all she knew was pain. If your loved one needs memory care consider a different facility.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad is at American House Bristol. He seems to be adjusting well. They seem to be very sensitive and typically are well informed of anything that he needs. I'm very pleased with where he is right now. My dad is an Alzheimer's patient. It is one of the few facilities in the area that has assisted living, but does have two other levels of memory care that he is probably going to need in the near future. I wanted a place that would be able to help him when those needs arise. His room is cozy. It's not a large room, but it meets his needs. It's a studio, and it's newly remodeled. It's not hardwood, but it's laminate flooring. It's freshly painted. It is small, but he is not really mobile, so it meets all his needs. So far, I have not had any problem with upkeep. They come in once a week and clean. They do a nice job of keeping it clean. When I come over at mealtimes, the food looks really nice. They seem to have well-balanced food. It's more like country cooking. The other night I was there, and they had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a variety of desserts. They also always have soup and salad, if you want that. My dad loves that kind of cooking. For activities, I know they have people come in and entertain them. They do luau and different things like that. Unfortunately, he has not been able to be there during the afternoon as much, which is when they have those kinds of activities scheduled.

My experience with American House was very disappointing. When I signed my mother up as a resident, I feel that I was sold a dream. My mother resided at the Bristol facility for just a 3-month period, and we experienced nothing but disappointment. Within a month my mother was hospitalized with a fractured wrist. Her room was never clean nor was she bathed regularly. I had to clean both her room and her person in order for her to not have to live like a homeless person. I understand that individuals with Alzheimer's/Dementia are not always the most compliant patients but I was promised a staff that was well trained in handling patients with this horrible disease. I visited my mother 4 to 5 times weekly and every time I was at the facility the staff was sitting in the dining area watching T.V. There was never anyone supervising the patients roaming the halls. I never saw the staff involved with the patients doing any kind of enrichment activities as I was promised . When I complained to Anita, the executive director or Kimberly, the head nurse, I was given excuses and more false promises that were never kept. The one bit of information I received from Anita consistently was that no matter what day of the month I removed my mother from the facility I was still responsible for 30 days worth of payment. I actually have many more complaints than I can fit on this review but I will say that my final decision to remove my mother from the facility was when I showed up to visit my mother and found her with a severely swollen ankle and wrist . She was in so much pain My husband and I had to carry her to her room to retrieve some of her belongings. After asking the aid what happened I was told my mother doesn't sit still and she fell in the courtyard. Apparently, my mother was in the courtyard unsupervised again and she fell but nobody knows how she fell. When I asked why I wasn't notified I was told that the facility was in the middle of a shift change and they didn't have time. I would think the patient's wellbeing would come first. Also, once again I was reminded by Anita that if I removed my mother from the facility that I would still have to pay for the next 30 days. This seems like a complete lack of concern for a patient coming from your Executive Director. Absolute revamping of the staff is necessary for this facility to be a safe and companionate place for elders with severe illnesses as is my mother. I am making my opinion of this facility public because people should know about this facility before they entrust their loved ones to this facility. I would have rated this with zero stars if I could of.

My brother moved into American House Bristol. It was in our price range, and it seemed to be a very clean facility, with very good staff, and the residents seemed to be very happy with their surroundings and the way they were treated. The people there at the facility seemed to be very caring and very knowledgeable about their jobs. They seemed to be focused on those that are there, on their care and their needs. He's been very happy with the meals. The food has been prepared in a very timely manner, and he enjoys it. I know they just hired a new director over the facility to administer activities. They do have a courtyard, a ladies' salon, and a barbershop. They do have lots of activities. They seemed to provide all of his needs there.

I visited this facility

When I visited American House Bristol, everyone was nice, and it seemed like the staff was nice. The room was more crowded there, and I didn't like that. The guy that showed me around was super nice. It seemed clean; it was an older building, but it was clean. It's near a hospital and it's kind of near where I live. It's also near a very big shopping area.

I visited this facility

American House Bristol was very clean and inviting and the staff was very kind and accommodating. I had a very good experience with the person I was with. He even went so far as to follow up with me after I had made my decision. They have a beauty salon. The dining area was also clean, well lit, and well organized, but I didn't see any food.

I visited this facility

The staff seem to be really friendly, and they try to answer all the questions that we had. They seemed to be very clean. The folks that were living there were sitting around talking. It seemed like an inviting atmosphere. The rooms were kind of small, which was a big negative for my uncle. He was also looking for a place with a small kitchen, but it is my understanding that small kitchens are not allowed in Tennessee's assisted living facilities. Other than the rooms being small and no little kitchen for him to fix something for himself, everything was great. The dining area was really nice, but we declined to have a meal. They have an activities director that we met. They play bingo, and I'm sure of other games as well. My uncle was concerned about being able to drive himself, which they allow. They have transportation if you need to go somewhere. The layout was fantastic. All the rooms were on one level. The assisted living was separate from memory care, which is a particularly good thing for the memory care part. Overall, it seemed like a really good facility.

I have decided to put my mom in here. It is a very friendly place and is nice. I think my mother would feel right at home there. They had a little jazz band playing there when I visited. It is just a nice and friendly place. It is close to my house, it is in Tennessee, and it just seems like the place to put her. I think it is very nice and clean. It is one floor, so it is easy for her to maneuver around. The people are very friendly. The apartment is very clean. It is a fine place to put her, a place that she would feel at home. They also have a very friendly staff. Everyone I spoke to there was very personable, very friendly, have a good sense of humor, and are very good natured. I only saw them for a short time, but I did not get any hostile vibrations from any of them. What really impressed me with that place is that everybody seemed to know everybody. They all said hello to everybody, they greeted everybody very cordially. It was nice, it was like a big family. I enjoyed the music, the band that was playing there was nice; my mother I am sure would enjoy it.

I visited this facility

It was amazing. The staff was absolutely incredible, and they offer hope to people. They allow them to have a more independent life and give assistance when it's needed. If my grandfather was a moderate assist, that would have been perfect. Everything about it was perfect. The residents there have a wonderful quality of life.

I visited this facility

It was very pleasant, and it's very convenient to hospitals and doctor's offices. The décor was fine, and the rooms were a little bit small, but then that's all you need. They had quite a few activities listed. The person there said they frequently go on field trips and places for different activities depending on what people like to do. The people were very pleasant, cooperative, and gave lots of information. He also said they serve 3 meals a day, and drinks and snacks are available in between. They provide some transportation for doctor's offices and visits.

It was very clean, and the staff was extremely nice and helpful. I had a lot of questions and they help me through the finances. They also have nice open common areas and some outdoor areas as well. The rooms were of fairly good size.

I visited this facility

It is our favorite because of the location since we live five or six miles from it, and it is easily accessible. The rooms were a good size. They had two-bedroom options, and ones with two bathrooms which we would definitely be interested in, so we are on a waiting list for them.

I visited this facility

My parents are happy here; their happiness was the only thing we were concerned with when placing them. They like the housing and can cook in their own apartment. My mother does most of the cooking, but they do like to go down and have dinner or breakfast with some of the other people who live there. They could improve on the activities that they offer since there aren't many. The staff is very friendly and very helpful.

It was good and it was very nice. The rooms were based on the size we were looking for. They had a restaurant style dining room. We ate lunch there and the food was good. What stood out was the kindness, the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff.

I visited this facility

We chose this community because it is close to where we live and they have a smaller venue. The rooms have bathrooms in it. The staff was nice and the food was good. My uncle seemed to really like their services.
