Known for its warm weather and enjoyable oceanfront, Lake Worth Beach is a city that many older adults call home. Until recently, the city was known as Lake Worth. Over 14% of the city’s 38,526 residents are 65 years of age or older. Living in Lake Worth Beach gives seniors access to the nearby JFK Medical Center, which specializes in stroke and spine care. Also in the area is the Select Specialty Hospital, which focuses on patients with complex medical needs.
In Lake Worth Beach, the average nursing home charges $9,095 per month for a semiprivate room, which is higher than the national average of $7,756, according to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey. Licensed nurses and nursing aides are commonplace in nursing homes, which provide 24-hour staffing. These and other features make nursing homes a relatively expensive senior care option meant for elders with advanced needs. Seniors whose abilities are suitable for home health care or assisted living can likely find a better, more affordable fit with one of these options.
This guide’s following sections dive into the cost of nursing home care in Lake Worth Beach and area resources for seniors.

Poor care. Unorganized. Management and owners could care less unless you have Medicare. Wry scary place. Would not return. Bug infested. Untrustworthy owners and administrators.

Following my hospitalization and surgery, I was told I needed to go to rehabilitation for therapy before returning home. All I know about rehab, was that I needed to be in a facility, where the staff communicated with each other. to better serve the patient. Fortunately, for me, I went to Signature, where that takes place. The list of nurses, nurses aides, physical and occupational therapists, swallowing assistant, is too long for me to mention here. But at Signature, they all communicate and work together for the benefit of the patient.I am not only grateful for my experience there, and the progress I personally made. But I would Highly and Sincerely recommend Signature to anyone needing the very best rehabilitation anyone could ask for.

To whom it may concern, Medicana Nursing & Rehab Center is second to none. I would like to identify the physical and occupational therapy team (John and Rick) at the facility as the BEST I’ve ever had. The rehab far exceeded my expectations they got me from bedridden to actually walking with a walker again in far under 1 month. The social worker Kia, unit nurse manager Monique, CNA Irene, and rest of administration always responded to anything I needed during my stay to make me as comfortable as possible. The food was 5 stars, Joe the food & nutrition manager came to my room and made sure I got the menu selections I wanted everyday. I owned 2 restaurants, so I know good food. If I ever have the need for rehab services again Medicana would be the only place I’d want to go.

While researching nursing home options for my aunt who has terminal cancer, I reached out to admissions for more information about this facility. Liz returned my call a few hours later. During our short conversation, I was interrupted repeatedly by Liz telling me to call back once the medicaid application was approved. I tried to explain the urgency of my aunts condition and that we were in the position to private pay until medicaid is approved, but she continued to interrupt me with requests to call back at a later time. I will not consider this facility an option for my loved one due to Liz’ rudeness and lack of compassion during this difficult time.

We chose Heartland Health Care Center-Boynton Beach for my husband, because of the proximity of its location to my home, the cleanliness of the place, and the very knowledgeable and energetic staff. They’re very caring and they have good communication with me and my husband. I am just very satisfied. I think any nursing home food needs improvement, but he seems to like the food there. He eats everything. They have daily activities and an activities director. They do puzzles, exercise, entertainment, and play games, but it depends on the resident, as far as how much they want to offer the individual, because of the different levels of Alzheimer’s. It’s the cleanest place I visited and no matter what time of day I go, it’s spotless. I’ve never seen a problem. The other thing that I noticed about that place that no other place could match is there’s never an odor. I’ve never experienced an odor going there, and I did in every other place I’ve been.

I feel compelled to detail the unprofessional, arrogant, and negligent treatment my 92 year old mother and I received at Boynton Beach Rehabilitation Center (Boynton Beach, Florida) who was admitted to this facility on
December 12, 2022. Less than a week prior, she underwent major surgery (after falling and fracturing her hip) at JFK Hospital (Atlantis, Florida)
While waiting a day and 1/2 for AMR ( American Medical Response)
to arrive at JFK and transport her to BBRehab, she arrived at the facility scared, agitated, and confused. My mother was immediately approached by several staff members who insisted on doing an initial assessment. She was very upset so I suggested they wait a bit – in my mind nothing needed to be done at that exact moment until she calmed down.
Prior to that, the admissions director took it upon herself to give my mother a xanax (not yet prescribed by the physician). This Director is also the same person who insisted I immediately go into her office to tell me that the billing department said they received the "wrong" secondary insurance info for my mother. This director wrote down exactly what I was to tell Medicare and that I needed to call Medicare immediately. I did exactly that only to find out that the director’s information was completely wrong – there was no insurance error.
Within an hour of leaving my mother, I was called by the nursing "supervisor" who was working the same day (December 12, 2022) – sometime between 10:00 am and 4 pm) mom was admitted to BBRehab. In a threatening manner she screamed that my mother was BEING DISCHARGED NOW – her exact words. When I asked where to, she said to the JFK ER. I pleaded with her to wait for my husband and I to arrive and speak to the physician but she repeated the same threat and slammed down the phone. She then called a couple more times again screaming "she is being charged NOW!!"
After my mom laid there (at BBRehab) 4 or more hours for AMR to arrive, she was sent back to JFK ER. She arrived alone and confused. I pleaded that someone from BBRehab call me when AMR arrived so I could meet my mother at JFK, but noone called.
I immediately contacted JFK ER and they said "this makes no sense, your mom was dicharged from JFK this morning and after only a few hours she is being readmitted to the same hospital??"
In all my life I have never experienced such
negligent, frightening, and horrendous treatment by "so called" professionals.
What happened with my mother is UNACCEPTABLE.

A few weeks ago, her roomate later died at 1 am. They refused to move the body from the room and refused to temporarily relocate my mother. She had to lay in the same room with the dead roomate all night until morning or sit in her wheelchair for the remainder of the night is the hall way. Mother asked to be moved so a new bend or the body moved, they refused either request.
I could go on and on about the failure to answer call buttons, their gross failure to feed people who need assistance in feeding. In fact, I had to feed the roomate myself, because she could not feed herself and the staff would just leave food on a tray. I could not watch her starve, but the staff didn’t seem to notice or care.

It reminds me of the Jefferson Institute in the movie Coma. There is no staff around and patients are left alone for most of the time. I visited my dad who is there temporarily and could not get out…the door was locked and alarmed and there was no staff at the door or anywhere. I walked around asking loudly for assistance to leave and finally heard a women’s voice down the hall. She told me to give her a minute and it was several minutes of waiting before she remotely unlocked the door. My elderly mother was stopped at the door and told she couldn’t leave because she was a patient, well she’s not and had to show proof. They have hardly any staff to take care of the patients or even know what’s going on. It’s like a scary movie…just awful.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Lake Worth, Florida
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
