My mom was at Saint Luke's Bishop Spencer Place for 28 days. She was there for rehab and as far as rehab is concerned, it was effective. The food was also good. They were kind of short-staffed, though. To improve, I think they need to get a staff that's older because it seems like the younger staff is kind of just there to get a paycheck.

A 20-day rehab period paid for by medicare was cut short due to a "lack of progress." We then paid for a 14-day stay at the nursing home. During this period my relative was injured at Bishop Spencer and sent to the hospital for treatment. We were then advised that my relative could not return to Bishop Spencer.

Night shift is disgraceful * Need meds? Plan on waiting until the next day. * Need a doctor? Only get sick on the 2 days a week they see patients. * Filing complaints with the director of nursing does nothing Make sure you have a family or friend that can advocate for you at this place, especially the “skilled” nursing unit. The PT/OT was decent, that’s about the only positive at this place.

Our second choice would be Saint Luke's Bishop Spencer Place. We like the place, the activities that would be open to us if we live there, and the people that we met including the person who showed us around. We had lunch there a couple of times, and the food was great. We liked all of those things. The big negative for us was the upfront cost. We certainly had the money, but we were reluctant to dip into our nest egg to pay the upfront amount, and that was what we liked the least. The staff were friendly and professional. They had the offerings of what we were looking for with one exception. They did not have a swimming facility, but everything else was excellent.

The staff claims they lost my mom's paperwork and were unable to get it to the social worker to confirm visits, so visiting my mom was next to impossible. When I visited - In the morning (9:30am), I found my mom slumped in bed with oatmeal on her face and neck, and still wearing her night gown. I helped her get dressed. While visiting, a nurse came in and explained that my mom was in too much pain earlier to get changed. Later in the day (2:30pm), my sister visited, and my mom had not received her pain medication or any lunch. When my sister found a nurse and demanded that my mom receive her meds, the nurse said she was offered them and refused. When I called that same night after talking with my sister, I asked my mom if she had lunch or dinner. She said, "I order too much food. It's my responsibility to eat it all." I asked several more times if any food had been brought - she said, "I know I ordered some. But I'm not hungry." When I asked about her pain meds, she said, "It's my responsibility to ask for my medications."

My mother is at Bishop Spencer Place. It's amazing. She pays a monthly fee, but there is a full buy-in. It's not for everyone, but that's what she wanted to do because she was selling her house in Denver so she can afford that. The food is great. The people all knew who she is. They have a welcome committee, so she has been welcomed. Numerous people have reached out and stopped by to meet her. They're responsive. It's a nice place. They've been great. So far, my mother hasn't participated in activities, but what we've seen that was a big thing for her. They have movie nights, bingo, chair yoga, and activities where they take people to the museums, baseball games, and all of that. They also do shopping trips and grocery trips and allow them to use the van; they just have to sign up to make a reservation. The place is beautiful; it is the nicest place I've ever seen.

Totally disappointed with the lack of care my father was given. When my Mom got him out of there he had Stage 4 bedsores, even on his ankles! His blood sugar was through the roof and hadn't been checked in ages. To make matters worse she had asked repeatedly about his condition and was repeatedly told they had everything under control. Stage 4 pressure ulcers do not occur overnight! Pretty pictures on the walls do not make up for ignoring the health care of residents. Mom thought she was getting him the best, instead he got the worst at double the cost!

Bishop Spencer Place is in a premier location off of the plaza. Although, this facility is under staffed when it comes to efficient service for all senior needs. My mother came to Bishop as a fall risk who needed rehabilitation from a left fractured hip. While attending this facility in Kansas City, Mo. on her 9th day she is left solely alone for lunch on the 9th day and she unsupervised gets up from her table and fell to the floor breaking her femur and later dying in hospice. There only method is to put sensor packs in her bed and wheelchair. The sensors are to alarm the staff that the patient has got up, but this method is horrible and ineffective. Ex. 3 times my mother has got up from her bed and wheelchair resulting into a fall.. I and and a friend ask the facility if there was something else they can do to keep her safe. Nothing else was done until she fell and broke her femur all the away across her bone. As a result of this fall she gave up and died in hospice. They need to come up with another safety method. The staff does not sanitize their hands when coming into or going out of the room. They don't even do that when they serve the food. Because of that my dad got influenza A (the worst kind) and had to go back into the hospital. Once, while I was there, he was served meatballs and pasta. I didn't think they looked right so I cut them open and took a bite. They were undone and I got food poisoning that night. So glad I didn't let my dad eat them.

Bishop Spencer Place was very nice, but it didn't have a pool and there was a big buy-in fee. I liked the fact that they were affiliated with the Episcopal Church.

We chose Bishop Spencer Place. It had independent living, assisted, and skilled nursing all under the same roof in the same complex. I like having all of those things together. They have a little bistro restaurant. All the food is excellent. They have a beautiful garden area. They have quite a few activities. I thought this one fit the best. My mother was in the rehab facility there. We liked it really well, so that was one of the influencing factors to go ahead and stay there. The location was good and the personnel is excellent. It's just a really, really good place. They're very caring. Everything is clean. I wouldn't have anything to complain about.

My dad is at Bishop Spencer Place and so far everything has been very good. What I liked about this facility is that my dad is in the assisted living and yet we just have to pay a little more money for extra care. My dad is a little bit independent but they make amends for the extra care.

The only complaint I had was that the people that lived there were very rude. They seemed like they were so annoyed with the staff that they could not help but be rude to any one and every one that crossed their path. My mother lived in the facility and she loved it. She loved how the nurses friendly the nurses and med techs are. She even has some that she considers her close friends. The cost isnt extremely . I loved the way the places were set up. The closets are generous. and cable tv and utilities are taken care. With the new technology they adopted i am able to stay connected w/ the staff easier. I also liked that they would give my mother bathing, dressing, and appointments.

This facility is definitely among the luxury-apartment style facilities. It is the only facility operated by the Episcopal Church of Kansas City, and closely affiliated with St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. It is located just off the corner of the Westport district in central Kansas City. It is a faith-based, not-for-profit facility which serves all faiths. Their chapel contains beautiful stained-glass windows and a full-size organ. In addition to Episcopalian services, they hold Catholic mass once a month and the facility encourages several devotional activities throughout the week. The buildings themselves are exquisitely and richly decorated at every turn. The large, formal gathering space includes several formal, high-backed chairs and a grand piano. The facility offers two library spaces, on-site banking, beauty and barber shop, complimentary laundry (some in the apartments themselves), and all sorts of similar amenities. In addition, there are almost too many planned activities, so one could never be bored, and much of the transportation is complimentary. If residents must travel someplace special they are able to rent cars with drivers for an additional cost. Another remarkable component was the way the facility handles catering. They have several restaurants on the campus, including a formal dining room, a casual bistro, snack areas, etc. Bishop Spencer Place has actually contracted out to a popular, well-known restaurant management chain in Kansas City who has taken over the operations of all catering on the campus. All the food looked and smelled amazing, and I didn't want to have to leave to find my own lunch. I would highly recommend this facility to my loved ones.
