It's a crying shame the meals served to these precious residents. Imagine a bowl of oatmeal with egg in the middle. Imagine a cold, hard piece of fried chicken with 1 cold piece of baked chicken and a few carrots. Or get this, a scoop of mac and cheese, 3 bag meatballs and peach cobbler. Nasty, just nasty. The owner should be ashamed.

The building is old but the care is 2nd to none. I spoke with the Director and he is the most caring person I have met. Activities, games, outing, they have it all. Staff is very nice and helpful. Just seems like they really care about the residents. It’s like a big family. Rooms are nice and you can’t beat the pricing.

The Colonial (Colonial Assisted Living) is not very new, which is not a problem, but it is plain, and it needs some updating on the outside. The rooms are all private. They have a number of activities for the residents. They have bingo where they win some play money, and with that play money, they can buy different items that you would get at a grocery store. They have a central kitchen, and they do laundry at a nominal charge per week. They have an attached nursing home next to them as part of their facility, so you can go from assisted living to nursing home with a minor move. The Colonial could use some updating inside, but they did have a very friendly staff. It is one of the 2 places that every staff member said hello or greeted me, and every resident did the same thing. I was remarkably impressed with that.

We liked Colonial Care Retirement Center a lot. It smells good and doesn’t have that nursing home smell. They do stuff that they aren’t even required to do for my mama. When she first gets up, she’ll be nauseous, but they’ll bring her a breakfast tray to her room. They don’t have to help with the laundry -- it’s extra -- but they had been helping her with it. They do a lot of little things as far as helping her to be comfortable and happy there. It’s harder for her to be able to eat because her esophagus doesn’t work, but as far as the way the food is presented and cooked, there’s not an issue with that. She says it’s pretty good. The location is very convenient for us. She has a much larger studio room with a big window. The kitchen area is very huge, nice, and bright, but it’s kind of small. They have at least 3 or 4 things every day. They have bingo and sing-alongs. We’re very Catholic in South Louisiana, and they do have the rosary once a week. There are a couple of times a month that they take them to Wal-Mart. Each month, they go to a different restaurant. You can go if you want to, and you don’t have to if you don’t want to. For Christmas, they have family day.

My husband lives in Colonial Care. He has been there for 2 years, and it’s a horrible place. The people who work there are surly, but the administrator is nice. He has been requesting for 3 weeks to see a physician there, but he never did, and he was finally sent to the emergency room without notifying me. That’s the second time that he went to the hospital and they did not call me. They don’t give him a diabetic diet even though he is a diabetic. They are supposed to check his blood sugar 4 times a day, but if we’re lucky they check it once. They do not give him his medicine on time as prescribed, and they don’t change his sheets or give him a bath regularly.

I would rate it lower but can't. My husband has been a resident in Colonial Care. Since being here has lost a significant amount of weight. He is a diabetic and is not fed a diabetic diet. His insulin levels are not checked regularly, but he is given insulin anyway. He very ill and [ asked the nurse to have him transported to the hospital. I was told he didn't qualify to go to the hospital therefore she would not call for transport. That night he was taken to the ER and admitted with a severe UTI and pneumonia. The nursing home did not contact me. I discovered he was in the hospital when I went in to visit and he wasn't there. He had a tooth pulled and began hemorrhaging. The nursing home called me to take him to the doctor. I was in a doctor"s appointment myself and could not leave. I asked them to take him, as it is their responsibility. I also asked them to keep me informed of his condition. Six hours later my husband called me from Our Lady of the Lake hospital, and informed me that he needed a ride back to the nursing home because he had just been left there. At one point the nursing staff at Colonial Care took him off all of his psych meds. After a month without them he was so sick he had to be hospitalized. Their excuse was his cardiologist did not write instructions for his psychiatric meds. My husband is bipolar and has a psychiatrist who takes care of his psych meds, not his cardiologist. In the last four weeks he has received only three baths, and one of those was because I pitched a fit. Yesterday he had not had a bath in five days. My daughter and I brought him to our upstairs apartment, and the two of us helped him in. I gave him a shower at which time I noticed his left foot was cold and I could find no pulse. The toes on both feet were turning dark, and the skin was peeling off. Six weeks earlier he was hospitalized and his feet were fine. On a regular basis he is given part but not all of his medications at the right time. Tonight they did not give him his nighttime medication at all. He went to the nurses station and asked for his meds. They said they forgot. The nurse was refusing to give him his meds then because she said it was past the medication period. He pitched a fit and was given part but not all of his meds at that time. He has gone weeks without his bed linen changed or his bed made up. I would not treat an animal this way, yet they are allowed to treat a human being this way. Do not put your family in this nursing home.

Money was an issue. Mother doesn't have any money and neither do I, so affordability was a primary concern. Colonial Care is the least expensive in Baton Rouge. They are very old, but they are refurbishing and getting it modernized. I think that is probably the only reason we can afford it is because it is so old. It is extremely clean, and the food is very good. We talked to a couple of residents, and they say they are very happy living there. It isn't as appealing in appearance as some of the newer ones. In talking to the director, they make up for it in extreme cleanliness and attention to details. The bedrooms are actually fairly large. There is a small functional kitchen in it with a refrigerator and stove. They were old enough that mother would know how to work it. The dining area is adequate. It has enough tables and chairs for everybody to eat at the same time if they wanted to. I saw the calendar, and I think I remember them saying they took them shopping to Wal-Mart once or twice a month. I think I remember them saying that they exercise every morning before they went to breakfast. It is well organized every day.

They were decent. They seemed like they were actually close to my grandmother, like their admiration for each other was genuine and since she liked it, I liked it.,
