I visited this facility

I visited The Piper Assisted Living and Memory Care. They showed us some very good accommodations. It seemed like it was gonna be a good fit; it was just out of my cousin's price range. The staff was very accommodating, gave a nice tour of the facility, and gave a lot of great information. They had different rooms and different activities at that facility, so we did like that. The layout was very nice. The rooms were probably a little smaller, but that's something you have to get used to when you move from a house to a facility like that. Other than that, everything was fine.

My mom's been in The Piper in Kansas City for a week now. It was a very easy and smooth transition. The amenities are excellent. They have a social dining room. They have an arts-and-crafts room, which is the activity room. They actually have a specific dining room just for the people in the memory care area where my mom is. They have pianos and people who come in to play music during the meals. They're served individually. The rooms are very nicely appointed. They're actually small apartments with a living room, a bathroom, and a bedroom. They include a washer and dryer and a kitchenette. Their staff is very pleasant and very attentive. The food is very good. I've had several different meals with my mother, and she enjoys them. She's always full and there's plenty of food. They get three meals and two snacks a day. It's very clean, and it smells wonderful when you walk inside. The cleanliness is great, and those are all things that I was looking for. They have a lot of new staff, so they're getting up to speed. That's just a concern to me. Some of the food is good, but it could be a little bit better. For senior citizens, though, it's probably the best for them because they don't over-season it or anything like that. The activities are excellent. The activity director is very lively, very good, and very inclusive. She makes the residents get up and do things. They've had a carnival, they've had bingo, and they've had musicians come in. This is all within one week, so every day there's something going on.

Everybody's friendly at The Piper. It's nice and clean. The residents seemed happy. I knew a couple of people that lived there. I know someone that works there as well, and we've had meetings there before. I was pretty pleased with it.

We placed my parents at the Piper a month ago, and they're fine. The staff took us on a very nice tour. The facility was very clean, very neat, and very receptive of special requests. They're in assisted living, and they help my dad with meds. They have a van available if somebody wants to go. The builder for the piper is a piano enthusiast, so there's a grand piano in every one of their sets of suites. It's really a positive thing because my mom plays the piano and the organ.

Provider Response

Thanks for the kind review, Vicki! We love having your parents here. Your mother often plays the piano in the community room during events and everyone enjoys listening to it!

The Piper is a bit understaffed. There are a lot of people and only three caregivers on the floor. Mom's doing pretty well because she likes to be around people. She enjoys the company of all the residents. We had to get after them about cleaning the place up and we had issues with her oxygen. She takes her oxygen off and we find the nose piece on the floor. We also had an issue with the medication there awhile back. There was a slipup, which was straightened out. They're doing better with her and they've cleaned the place up. They seem well fed and they take them out to ballgames.

What an amazing community! My father-in-law is living here and we are all amazed at the quality of staff, the compassion of everyone, how his needs are consistently met, and how many things there are for him to do when he wants to participate. Doing what he wants to do (and not do), allows him to still have independence and be in control of his own life - all the while in a safe, beautiful environment. The Piper calls this the Household model and it is unique in this regard, from our research. Dad is always clean as is his apartment, and the food - he loves the food! Our family can not speak highly enough of The Piper and it’s caring staff.

I would recommend that you steer clear of this facility. Our experience was not good, and all indication is that things are still headed down hill fast. - VERY high employee turnover of employees. The hard working staff got over-worked and quit. - Staffing appears to be way below what is recommended / needed for this type. As a result, the non-ambulatory residents get 100% of the care in the evenings and overnight. The rest are left to "entertain" themselves. - Staff are not monitored, so there is alot of lounging around, checking Facebook, texting friends, and complaining about who's turn it is to go help someone. Witnessed this first hand MANY times. - Front desk staff are non-responsive, give inaccurate information and don't appear to know how to run this type of facility. - Cleaning of the rooms rarely happens. We visited our family member 2 times a week (min.) and we had to clean the entire suite. Many times our family member was left with full soiled trash cans, chairs, floor and bedsheets. Had we not visited with frequency, the staff would potentially have left him to live in these conditions for longer than 2-3 days. - Slow to no maintenance response to fix broken toilet, toilet seat, and sink leak. We ended up going out to buy the parts to fix the toilet and toilet seat, and doing the work ourselves. - Virtually NO activities for the residents, despite what was told to us. No dedicated activities person on staff. I think they went through 2-3 people during a 6 month period to try and get this going. Didn't ever happen. Our hearts go out to some of the residents that don't appear to be getting the attention they need to help them cope with their health issues. The building is very nice and it's set up to help support a successful program. Problem is that it this place does not appear to be run well and by competent / caring staff.

Provider Response

We apologize for your dissatisfaction while your family member lived at The Piper. Our Community Leader and entire Household Team takes every concern seriously. We understand your comments related to staffing and have implemented additional training and have made other adjustments. Our desire is to create a home like atmosphere for each of our residents to enjoy.

I am beyond disappointed in the consistency, communication is nonexistent with administration. There is a lack of professionalism with a few staff as they look on their cell phones instead interacting and stimulating the patience with games or activities. There is a great employee turnover, and lack of activities and interaction to motivate and give the patients stimulation. Basic needs are met but because of short staffing, there is not a good patient to care taker ratio. Too many patients are being ignored because of the patients who need more hands on assistance. While it's a nice looking facility, it's quality of care is falling short.

My husband is a resident in the memory unit. The facility is new and is beautifully laid out and decorated. The meals are very good with adequate proportions. Most of the employees are very friendly and helpful. However, the management is much less than we expected. There has been billing errors every month my husband there. There staff is over worked and there is a high turn over. Meetings with management is not communicated or implemented on the floor. The resident's bathrooms are not checked or cleaned often enough not thoroughly enough. My husband was out of medication for a week which resulted in behavior problems. There are not enough employees to properly over see the residents and when some employees do not show up for work, others are required to work 16 hour. We are very disappointed.

Provider Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We also thank you for your time today to discuss your concerns, which we are looking into. The situation you have described is not up to our commitment of quality service and care that The Piper is known and recognized for, and that our team strives to provide every single day.

While the place is clean and looks good (it should since it is fairly new) the care of patients is on and off. Mom had soiled herself and had been left unattended long enough for it to go up her back and dry. This place is expensive. The level of care should equal that. The Administration is less than attentive to the paperwork process. It took a family member showing up and refusing to leave until a phone call was made to get the insurance claim process finished. This was four months after mom's passing, multiple phone calls, and several unanswered messages. Four months of waiting for a 5 minute phone call.

I visited this facility

The Piper felt like a home and a community. It smelled fine. The private rooms were definitely adequate. The meals were set up very nicely, and there was a small, personal kitchen for each floor. They had a chef and some aides. It was set up almost like a home, and they made sure that patients were involved in as much as possible.

I love The Piper; it's awesome. They are very friendly and very helpful. All the residents are new in their house, so they are getting to know each other which is very good. The grounds are beautiful, and the place is new. The rooms are beautiful and spacious, and Mom brought her own furniture. I had a meal there, and everything I had was good. Each house has 20 apartments connected to it, and each on has its own dining room, but there is a central kitchen where all the food is cooked. The house lady takes care of special orders or anything that they want that's not what the chef prepared that day.

I really liked The Piper. It was really homey. It felt comfortable. If I were to go, that’s where I would want to be. I loved the people that were in there. They were all friendly. They had a 24-hour kitchen; if anybody got hungry anytime, there was somebody there to cook for them. It was a very nice place.

My father has been a resident since The Piper opened.. He is able to care for himself except help with a shower. We have been greatly satisfied with his care. Plus, The Piper is only 6 minutes from my home which is another plus. I rest easy knowing he is at The Piper. Also, when I have a question from anyone, I normally get an answer fairly quickly. I highly recommend The Piper

It is a brand new one called The Piper. We didn't go inside to see anything, but the lady that talked to us was very nice and very informative. She gave us the information, but right now my mother stays where she is. She went over the cost and where it begins, and the more care somebody needs, the more it is going to cost. In a nutshell, they don't have any assistance to be able to help anybody else to pay the cost. It is strictly out of your pocket. We couldn't go look at anything because they are building it brand new. All we can do is go to the office. It looks like it could be a nice place. They explained that whoever would live there can go eat there. They will have their own private place to live. They will have nurses on staff to assist whoever needed help.

Our family is excited to move our Mother into the new Piper facility! We read up on the household model they created and believe that concept will foster more social interaction for her. Another concept that has been lost on other assisted living facilities is "patient-centered care". The staff will get to know our Mother's personal schedule, likes/dislikes and family members and not treat her care as just another thing on a list of things to do. We were able to tour the facility in Manhattan that converted to this model and found the staff and residents all interacting well and many stories were shared on their outings. Awaiting anxiously for the June move-in!

I have attended seminars at The Piper Welcome Center. These meetings were very informative in regards to Elder Law, Dementia concerns, how to handle falls. The staff and speakers were very informed on the subject discussed. I'm hoping at some time to transfer my mother into The Piper community as I feel comfortable with the staff and secure knowing they will do their very best to provide for her as I would.
