"Hearthwood Senior Living had a full range of services, from you know, three days a week meals if you wanted them, complete apartments of various sizes, and reasonable monthly rents or fees, and no entrance fee. That was a big deal. As many places do, they had craft rooms, a library, and a swimming pool. The staff was wonderful, and the people were active, very friendly, and welcoming. It's very clean, and they have a new owner, so they're undergoing a remodeling with new carpeting and new woodwork, and so forth. We toured for independent living, but it's a continuous care community, so there is a wing for rehab or for more assisted living if you need it."

"My mother passed away 3 years ago just a month shy of 104. I acknowledged the wonderful care my mother received during her time in Assisted Living and the Nursing home. Addolorata Villa provided excellent care, kept residents in all areas engaged. The level of care in all sections was consistent and of high quality. Some of my best memories come from special events such as the celebration of those 100 years old and over. From the quality of the food, cleanliness of rooms, the comfort level and furnishing throughout the Villa demonstrated top quality. Most important is the staff. Not only did they provide support to my mother, but to me as well. They also did not forget about my mother after she passed away. I cannot adequately describe my feelings from the card and note and remembrance in a Mass over the past few years. Thank you Leo Burns"

"Bridgeway of Bensenville is in a good location for the family members. They have a great rehabilitation section from surgeries and injuries. The staff and nurses are very caring, very accommodating, and very sincere about wanting everything to be good. They are in the process of remodeling right now, so it's a little difficult going to different entrances in the front door because of the construction going on. The food here is better compared to other places. "

"One of the best decisions I ever made was to move to Sedgebrook. The activities are so many and varied, for example the garden plots where we can grow flowers and vegetables. The apartments are bright and the food is high quality. But best of all is the inside parking that we did not find at any other facility."

"Our visit to Concord Place was great. It is a wonderful facility. It is beautiful. It is like a little island in the middle of an industrial area; however, without a car, you are kind of stranded there. My dad said if it is in a better location, he would have picked that one. Their staff is very nice. I saw their apartments and I think they were probably a little bit bigger than the ones in the other facility we visited. It is a beautiful facility but its location is just inconvenient for us. "

"We loved Covenant Living at the Holmstad. It was lovely. I would love to have my mom go there. Everybody knew each other. The residents knew the staff and said hi to them as we walked through the place. The 2-bedroom was phenomenal. It would fit my mother's needs completely. It would have been just perfect. They had so many amenities and so many things that they do like going out shopping and all these things. It's a fun and caring place for people that have limited ways to get around and that needed just a little bit of care."

"I'm doing research for myself, and so far, the one I like the best is Vi At The Glen. It has everything. I have Raynaud's; otherwise, I'm very healthy. I still drive, but I'm 85. So if I cannot drive or if I don't have a car, that's one place that I would never have to leave. It has absolutely everything that I like to do. When I was there, I noticed the people were active. In all the other places, I hardly saw any people, and here at Vi, I saw people playing cards and doing things. I also like the fact that it has a pool, a workout room, a library, and all sorts of activities. It has places to walk inside. If you have a car, it has indoor heated parking, and they bring your car, and there's no charge for it. It's all included, and no tipping for that, so how nice is that? I saw the apartment that I would choose. I only want a one-bedroom. It's a living room, a bedroom, and a bath and a half. They supply all appliances, even a stack washer and dryer. They offer a full kitchen and 30 meals a month, which is probably plenty because I only eat three meals a day basically, so for me it's good. I also like where it is located in Glenview. The staff was very pleasant. The gardens are beautiful. I don't garden, but it's pretty."

"Lincolnwood Place is beautiful, and the apartment we will be moving into is lovely. They serve two meals a day. We saw the dining room and we ate there a couple of times. We saw the auditoriums, a workout room, a beauty shop, places to exercise, a library, and a game room. The person during the tour was wonderful."

"Three Crowns was very lovely and seemed like they had very good services. It’s continuing care, which is definitely on the top of our list. I could see people doing aqua aerobics and hanging out having coffee. It’s very nice, clean, and new. We have a friend whose parents are there, and she is certainly happy with it. "

"I am currently in the Village at Victory Lakes. You start with independent care; then you go to assisted living; then you go to the other levels of care. The food is satisfactory. I wouldn't say it was great, but it's four meals a day. We start with breakfast and end with an evening meal. You can take it to your room or eat at the dining room (we have dining rooms here). The staff members are very, very nice people; I don't think there could be anyone that is nicer. They're very courteous and caring. My biggest complaint is the finances. I haven't been to others, but this place is very expensive for independent care. I'm paying $5,000 a month, and I've been here for a long long time; that's $60,000 a year. The activities are very limited. We're very lonesome; there's nothing going on here that would keep the people occupied and caring. We have what we call enrichment programs. There are branches here hired specifically to get seniors out of their rooms. We tried Wii bowling, bingo, book reading, and playing cards. They don't take you to show you shows, and we don't even get to play golf off the complex. It's demoralizing."

"In general, I think that this is a beautiful facility, obviously upscale, but in extremely good taste. There is a library and a little shopping area with candy and jewelry. There is a very nice dining area. The lobby is spacious and comfortable. The receptionist is friendly and helpful. The one draw back is the parking in the back of the building, which is often full and it is hard to find parking on the street. This is definately an urban setting. Many of the patients are Holocaust survivors. The staff are very helpful and will work with the patient and the family if there are financial or other problems. The facility offers an array of activities -- opera programs, ice cream socials, current events, etc. The facility also provides religious programming and services for the mainly Jewish population. There are individual apartments where residents can live in an independent living situation. There is also continued care and nursing home facility on other floors. On the top floor is a lovely activity room with glass windows. Sometimes there is a pianist who plays music. Patients can go up and get an icecream cone or can go out on the roof patio when the weather is nice. I would highly recommend this facility. The patients that I talked to seemed happy because there are many activities that are offered. "

"I toured Franciscan Village. They couldn't show me an assisted living place because there was none available, but I did get to see an independent living apartment. It was very lovely. Everything seemed very clean, and everybody seemed very friendly. When I first got there at 10:00, I walked in and a siren was going. Evidently, they contacted the fire department. The siren was so loud, I had to go sit in the car. Then when the fire department left, I went back in. I went to the front desk, and the staff had no record of me coming for the appointment. She had nobody to show me anything or talk to me. I wasn't very happy because I would have to come back another day. Then I guess she contacted somebody that was more into assisted living, but she still knew a lot. They did find somebody (not the right person), but there was somebody to talk to me. She was very, very good. I had no problem with her. She had all the answers to my questions. Everything was very, very nice. It just seemed like it was very religious. Everybody had by their doors statues, crosses, and all that. I had nothing to say about the place. Everything was good. They couldn't show me the dining area because the main elevator wasn't working. In fact, when I was sitting and waiting to be shown around, one of the people that lived there came up to me and was very upset because you can only get to the dining area with the main elevator. There's another elevator to get to your room, but it doesn't connect to the main dining room evidently. They were asking the main desk constantly, 'Is the elevator fixed? Is the elevator fixed?' There was a little issue with the elevator evidently, so I did not see the dining area. The only thing we went to was one of the independent living apartments. They showed me that there was a place to sit outside on each floor. The staff explained, which to me was very important, the assistance you can get even though you're independent if you pay for other services. Even if you get worse, they have another building. This is what I'm interested in. I just feel I want to have something available without having to have to him too much. I really like it. One of my neighbors went there, and I respect this neighbor. I looked him up there, and he came and talked to me. I'm 100% for this. I like this place. Everything was very clean and very nice. Everything was good."

"I have lived at the Clare for nearly 16 years. It is very much "home", but in addition to that, it is FAMILY—residents and staff caring deeply for one another.. Life here enhances the good experiences of my earlier life. The excellent staff perform unbelievable services; the food is extraordinary. I cannot imagine living anywhere else. I couldn't be happier."

"The Garlands of Barrington is very nice, but for my husband and I, the entrance fee is very high. The food is absolutely wonderful. We also saw an apartment that was on the first floor that has a patio. I like this a lot because I'd like to put flowers out there. I really think that The Garlands of Barrington is a Cadillac or Rolls Royce of retirement living. There are plenty of activities. It's really a wonderful place."

"I liked the Windsor Park Manor quite a lot. I am not really happy about how far away this one is from Geneva. The staff was very nice and very helpful. I had a very good tour. It was a very lovely place. One of the things that my wife and I like a lot about both Windsor Park and another facility -- which we have not visited -- is that they have duplex homes for independent living. I had an excellent time. It was very helpful, and I liked it. My only concern as I said was location. It is not really far, but I would like it to be a little closer. It is not quite as convenient as I had hoped. "

"I thought the Covenant Village was a small one, but it's a building that is connected from one building to the other because they have skilled nursing, they have memory care, and it impressed me because the people were not segregated. They can interact with each other in the big dining hall and order food if they want to, or they can also make their own food. There were also small apartments like a home or the independent living, but some of their independent living residents hire a private CNA to come for a couple of hours to tidy up things. It was beautiful. They have a huge library, a salon, and an exercise room. That is probably because they have a rehab center too. Their buildings were connected with a canopy, and they use the middle part as a park, which is a very nice plan because they have an outlet for getting out. Some of the people in the independent living can do their own laundry if they want, or they can ask someone else to get it done for them, but with an additional fee. I was actually overwhelmed by the system and what I saw. It was beautiful, and they have like a restaurant where the assisted people would like to come in, have coffee, and be served just like when they used to do it by themselves, which made me feel great. I thought, "Oh my goodness, I never thought that there is a place like this." It was real and beautiful. I told my mom that this was one of the two places she would be going to if that time would come. "
