I visited this facility

I looked at this facility for my 91yr. Old mom who has dementia. I feel it is a perfect solution for her . The staff were engaged and genuinely caring of the residents. It was a warm and cozy home without a hint of the institutionalized feel but at the same time I felt confident that the CNA ‘s were very capable. I would highly recommend visiting and considering this type of facility .

Provider Response

Dear Maggie, Your mom was a hoot! We loved her stories and hope she comes back for our Thanksgiving celebration. Everyone enjoyed having her over for a luncheon, as they all love to host visitors. It can be a big transition for a 91 year old to move, even to a fabulous home. Change can be scary. Give her time. Thanks for the kudos. Much appreciated. We will see you again, soon. Warmly, Deirdre

I visited this facility

Just Like Home's Dogwood Home was in a rural area. The rooms were spectacular and they had a walk-in shower. The residents were taken out of their rooms to an exercise room and they all looked showered. It's just like being in a home. It was beautiful. There's a nurse and two other helpers for the memory care residents. They have a barber/salon for them to get their hair cut, a woman that comes in and does exercises in the big community room, and televisions in their rooms as well as in the front living room and the exercise room.

I went to Just Like Home's Dogwood Home. It was just like home. It's small and intimate. We walked in and there was an activity going on in the living room and it looked like there was a family there. All the residents knew each other. They were very caring and kind and I was extremely impressed. The residents were very involved, and they all seemed content and happy. It just was awesome. There were about eight residents and they all had their own room and their own bath, and all the bathrooms were wheelchair roll-in. You didn't have to step over anything to get into them. You could just get wheeled in with your wheelchair. The staff was pleasant and seemed extremely nice. When I walked in, they were having a Bible study or something, but they were all engaged and happy. They had a living room and there was a backroom to visit with family or something like that, but it seemed like they do most of the activities right there in the living room. The building was excellent. The food looked good. It's all homemade.

Provider Response

Thank you for a rave review Christine. It really is just like home, the name could not be more fitting. We have just six residents and being full up, with a waiting list, we will be opening another home nearby in Shelton in a few months. IT really is a different kind of experience. Your words were much appreciated. Sincerely, Deirdre

My daughter and I are interested in Dogwood as a potential assisted living/memory care home for my wife who is currently residing in a large assisted memory care facility. We found the very warm homelike atmosphere, the 24 hour staff care, the beautifully remodeled interior, the resident activities, the small but very engaging resident population and the overall management care and safety philosophy provided by Deidre, Cece and the staff to be what we believe will be in the best interests of my wife. You can feel the love and care being provided to the residents as soon as you walk in the door.

Provider Response

Dear Dick, It was such a pleasure meeting you and hearing all about Patty. We look forward to having Patty move in, when we have a vacancy. She, along with your family, would be a blessing. Dogwood is the residents' home-and we love when family visits. Everyone loves it. Everyone's life is enriched to have loving, supportive families come visit. Thank you again. 'Hope to see you soon. Warmly, Deirdre

I toured Just Like Home's Dogwood Home. It was just a tour, so I was only there for a very short time. I wasn't there obviously, to have a meal or see them have a meal or anything. Everything that I observed was very good, and I was very impressed. It's assisted living for people with memory care and people who need extra help. I did ask the woman who gave me a tour, and she said all the residents there were memory care people. It's a private home in a residential neighborhood. They have a lovely, large, wooded backyard and a large deck for the residents to sit out on in the nice weather. The house is a regular ranch style house. They all have their own bedroom suites with showers that are wheelchair accessible, and then they have the regular the kitchen, dining room, and living room. She said those that are able to take part in the regular household activities like folding laundry, cutting up vegetables, and things like that. It's run like a regular house. Many of the residents were sitting in the living room watching TV, and there were some in the kitchen. She gave me a tour of all their bedrooms, and they were all very nice. They are all furnished. They were also allowed to bring in furniture and things that they had in their own homes to make it seems more like their own. I was very impressed with that. They have a large solarium-type room, which would have been nice on a nice day with the sun coming in. The staff said they have an activity room, and they bring in people to sing, entertain, and do things like that. They can accommodate six residents, and they all have their own private rooms. The staff was able to answer all my questions. She explained that there's one fee when you go in and that one fee, the rent that they pay monthly, stays the same. It doesn't fluctuate or go up. Once you come in, you're locked into that fee. They provide all the services. They wash clothes. They clean the room, and they can help the residents with dressing, walking, or whatever they need. There are two CNAs there all the time. The ratio is three-to-one to the residents and the CNAs, so that's very good. It's much more cost effective to be in a residential place like that than it is to say to go to a larger facility. I didn't have any food and I didn't see what they were eating. When I did speak to the woman, she said that they can accommodate dietary needs of the residents there. She said that everyone there is on a low-sodium diet because it's the healthiest. They are fed fresh vegetables and fresh fruits, and they watch their diet very closely. I was impressed with that, even though I didn't see them eating.

Provider Response

Wow, Carol, you can give the next tour! You captured it perfectly. A home l, a real home full of love. You’re a good daughter!

I visited The Dogwood Home with my daughter to find out if it would be a good fit for my husband who has a brain injury The house is impressive, light and airy, the rooms are also light and airy and personalized to each residents requirements. They have communal meals in a lovely dining area, they have living room and den options plus a delightful deck to enjoy the good weather. A very caring and pleasant place to be.

Provider Response

We really enjoyed meeting both you and your daughter and hearing about your husband. Finding a good fit is the key to everyone's happiness; the resident's and the family's. We encourage people to explore. Our small, loving, family-style environment is perfect for some. We wish your family the best and hope to meet your husband one day.

I went to Just Like Home's Dogwood Home. It was so much different from the other facilities because it's an actual home where only 6 people were living there . It's a lot more comfortable, more the personal connection between the residents and the caregivers, and it would be a quieter environment. The staff was very helpful. It was very modern and very clean.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Dogwood Home is an extraordinary place. It is pretty much a template for what a care home for the elderly should be. One key factor in its remarkable success is that it is small - only six residents. These residents are not in an institution, they are in their home; cared for by a small group of staff that they get to know well, and who know them well. The physical environment in Dogwood Home is impeccable. Each resident has his or her own spacious bedroom with an equally spacious en-suite bathroom. The whole facility has been designed by someone who truly understands the needs of the elderly and infirm. Every visiting medical worker I met there was deeply impressed and more than one said they had never seen anything like it. The driving force behind Dogwood Home is a remarkable woman with a deep commitment to caring for the elderly with dignity and in comfort. This is a commercial operation but profit is not the primary goal - providing a secure and pleasing environment for the residents is. Following a stroke, my wife was in a large nursing home for awhile, where she was almost totally withdrawn and immobile (the fact I could not visit her because of Covid-19 restrictions did not help). In a short time in Dogwood Home, where I was free to visit whenever I wanted to (subject to negative Covid test and being masked), she progressed to being much more like herself and to being able to walk [short distances] with the aid of a frame.

Provider Response

You have me tearing up. Thank you so much. I love your wife and am glad that we could help her in her recovery. It is really all about the care and treating people with dignity and respect and on top of that-having fun! That is the reason the Caregivers work for days and weeks in a row, they are devoted to the residents. Keeping a small, tight, loving staff keeps it like a family. Lifting spirits through laughs, love and levity is what I love best!

Upon visiting and touring Just Like Home's Dogwood Home, I was very impressed by the level of attention and care that the caregivers were able to give to the residents. The home had a very intimate nature while being luxurious at the same time. Additionally, it was well situated and planned out to be able to uniquely cater to the residents needing memory care.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The first time I visited Just Like Home at Dogwood with my father I immediately noticed how warm, inviting and calm it was. The home itself is new with a well thought out floor plan with each resident having their own private room and bath. It is beautifully decorated, with lots of natural light, clean and has many spaces to gather together. My father loves that he is in a neighborhood that feels familiar to his own home. He especially loves spending time in the back deck and yard. Deirdre and all of the staff are extremely compassionate and caring. It was a difficult decision to move Dad into a home but it was the best decision for him. He is safe, well cared for and because there are only 6 residents it feels like family. The caregivers are extremely patient, attentive and communicate regularly. We were blessed to find this assisted living home for Dad. With Dad's alzheimers he could no longer live alone and it is comforting to know that he is safe, well cared for and not alone. Most importantly he is happy.

Provider Response

We are so happy that you, and your dad and whole family are happy. The home is beautiful yet it is really all about the care and the family environment. Especially since your dad is having memory issues, it really helps to be in a small, intimate nurturing environment. Thanks for being part of the family!

Beautiful, well appointed home that has considered all the possible needs of memory care residents. The staff is attentive. The security system prevents residents from wandering off the premises. Medications are kept locked and distributed to residents as required. The Home provides a much more personalized care than the larger care facilities I have toured.

I saw Dogwood Home featured on Channel 12 News and I was very intrigued. Never had I heard of this concept, an actual home for seniors who have memory loss. When you arrive at the home, you pull up to a house in a lovely neighborhood, and that was our first impression of it feeling like a home. Once inside, the home was meticulously detailed for seniors; wide hallways, special sinks, showers that you walk into. My dad really loved the bedrooms with private bathrooms, and the idea of someone cooking and cleaning for him! I loved the way the caregivers were so warm, loving, kind, and the way they looked after the residents there. Very warm and inviting.

Provider Response

Dear Dean, 'Glad you saw us on the news as did so many people. We got a lot of calls. The newscaster actually had a personal interest in Dogwood Home because his own mom had Dementia for 20 years and he had taken care of her all of that time. She had recently passed and he was enamored with our intimate home.Stay tuned for part II of the newscast as he is coming back to do a feature.

The food here is terrific. I envied my Dad for eating so good! Beautiful, bucolic setting, the home is all set up for wheelchair, etc., access. The house manager is onsite all the time, and her two cats bring a lot of life to the home. Many activities are offered.

Provider Response

Dear Rick, We loved having your dad stay for respite care. He is full of interesting stories and has all his wits about him. It was great to meet all of the family over lunch and over the weeks he was there. I hope you will all come back soon. Channel 12 news is doing a story on us, I hope your family can be there this Sunday.

Just Like Home was a godsend for my family. We were searching for respite care for my Mom as she is my Dad’s sole caregiver and we found the Dogwood Home which is located in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood in Shelton, CT. It is a gorgeous, fully equipped home for 6 residents with every possible amenity, and totally handicapped accessible. He had his own private room w/ private bath, he was served delicious, homemade meals everyday and we were able to join him whenever we wanted. They follow very strict Covid guidelines which gave us peace of mind and the care and attention he received went above and beyond our expectations. If you are looking for a small, loving, family like environment with top notch care, this is the place you have been looking for !
