Arlington Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Arlington:

Vial of Life Program

Address: varies (located at all Arlington Fire Stations)
Phone Number: (817) 459-5500

The Vial of Life Program puts essential medical information into the hands of emergency responders when most needed during a crisis, even when people aren’t able to speak. Vial of Life magnets can be picked up at any Arlington Fire Station for free. The resident’s medical information (filled in with help from their primary physician) is placed inside of the magnet, which should go on the front of the home’s fridge. All Emergency Medical Personnel working in the area have been trained to look for this magnet.

Handitran

Address: 1101 W. Main St., Arlington, TX, 76013
Phone Number: (817) 459-5390

Handitran is a discounted public transportation program for Arlington residents age 65 and older. There is a $10 application fee and proof of age must be shown to qualify. If approved for the program, seniors pay only $2 one way for local transportation. For those who plan on using Handitran frequently, there’s an option to purchase a monthly pass for $55. The monthly pass allows for unlimited trips during a calendar month.

SilverSneakers Program

Address: varies
Phone Number: (866) 584-7389

SilverSneakers is a fitness program offered to seniors age 65 and older on certain Medicaid programs. It provides free online classes and allows qualifying seniors to work out at local participating gyms, such as LA Fitness or the YMCA of Arlington for free. Eligibility can be checked anytime online or over the phone. Someone is available to answer phone calls Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging

Address: 616 Six Flags Dr., Arlington, TX, 76011
Phone Number: (800) 272-3921

This is a government agency that helps seniors living in and around Arlington. It provides a range of services for people age 60 or older, with a focus on those with low incomes or chronic health conditions. A few examples of services offered include benefits counseling, care coordination, health classes and meal delivery services. The Agency on Aging also helps seniors by providing additional resources and information.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
