"We had an excellent experience with Visiting Angels in Irving. My father was very hesitant about getting help at home. Olevia came over and explained the entire process to him, how they worked and how it would benefit him. They matched Dad up with Rosie and she has been a blessing for 2 months. She put Dad at ease and was such a big help on her visits. She came twice a week for 2 hour shifts and Dad always looked forward to her visits. Rose was always pleasant and did an outstanding job at what needed to be done. Thank you Visiting Angles for your assistance in getting dad back on his feet."

"I'm using Comfort Keepers for my mother, and they're great. Denise -- the caregiver -- is awesome. She works 9 hours a week -- Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 3 hours. They can improve by cutting the prices in half. It's just very expensive to have someone come and stay. If it was cheaper, we'd have the caregiver here longer. "

"We chose Home Instead - Fort Worth NorthWest for dad. He has been in it for about a month now. Their services include keeping him clean and dry and taking him to the restroom, checking his blood pressure, and watching him in case he gets up and walks so that he doesn't fall because he's at high risk of falls. They do light meal prep, laundry, sweeping, and a little bit of mopping, and they make his bed. It's mostly been good. He's had more different workers than I thought he would have. It's hard sometimes to adjust to change, but so far, we're doing pretty well. He has one person who's really great about keeping up with him and his blood pressure and everything else, and making sure he's clean and dry. A couple of the others aren't really working so hard at keeping him clean and dry. Dad seems pretty happy with it for the most part. I don't have any problems making sure someone is here for him. They always find someone. The only thing I notice is that sometimes they don't communicate well with each other, and so when another one comes in, it's like they need to learn all over again. Communication is lacking a little bit, but other than that, it's good. They have a nice list. They just need to communicate it a little bit better to each worker that comes in, and maybe remind the worker to keep up with the client a little bit better if they need to go to the bathroom or if they need to be changed."

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
While paid home care services are a good option for older adults who want to remain in their homes, there are many affordable alternatives through community-based initiatives. The following resource table highlights agencies and programs that provide services to supplement what older adults obtain through home care, which may help you reduce your out-of-pocket care expenses.
| Resource | Contact | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Senior Centers | (817) 459-5474 | Arlington is home to several senior centers where older adults participate in social and recreational programming, receive nutrition services and get help with finding resources in the community, helping older adults who live alone to avoid isolation. Many locations offer transportation services to and from the center. |
| Area Agency on Aging of Tarrant County | (817) 258-8000 | The local Area Agency on Aging offers a range of services to those aged 60 and over in the Arlington region. It provides benefits assistance to connect seniors with programs that may pay for in-home care and contracts with local care providers to offer subsidized services. |
| Tarrant County Veteran Services Office | (817) 531-5645 | The Tarrant County Veteran Services Office provides benefits counseling and assistance for older veterans and their families, helping them determine whether they qualify for programs such as Aid and Attendance and the veterans' home care program. The office can also provide referrals for services in the community. |
| The Senior Source | (214) 823-5700 | The Senior Source is a regional nonprofit organization that provides social services and financial assistance to older adults in Arlington. Through this agency, you can obtain help with utility bills, letting you avoid service disruptions. The agency also hosts lectures, webinars and forums on age-related issues. |
| Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County | (817) 336-0912 | Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County provides home-delivered meals to qualifying individuals in the Arlington region. Through its Home-Delivered Meals plan, it delivers up to two meals daily, including a hot noontime meal and a cold supper. It also serves congregate meals at adult activity centers throughout the region. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
