There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Arlington:

Vial of Life Program

The Vial of Life Program puts essential medical information into the hands of emergency responders when most needed during a crisis, even when people aren’t able to speak. Vial of Life magnets can be picked up at any Arlington Fire Station for free. The resident’s medical information (filled in with help from their primary physician) is placed inside of the magnet, which should go on the front of the home’s fridge. All Emergency Medical Personnel working in the area have been trained to look for this magnet. 

Handitran

Handitran is a discounted public transportation program for Arlington residents age 65 and older. There is a $10 application fee and proof of age must be shown to qualify. If approved for the program, seniors pay only $2 one way for local transportation. For those who plan on using Handitran frequently, there’s an option to purchase a monthly pass for $55. The monthly pass allows for unlimited trips during a calendar month. 

SilverSneakers Program

SilverSneakers is a fitness program offered to seniors age 65 and older on certain Medicaid programs. It provides free online classes and allows qualifying seniors to work out at local participating gyms, such as LA Fitness or the YMCA of Arlington for free. Eligibility can be checked anytime online or over the phone. Someone is available to answer phone calls Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging

This is a government agency that helps seniors living in and around Arlington. It provides a range of services for people age 60 or older, with a focus on those with low incomes or chronic health conditions. A few examples of services offered include benefits counseling, care coordination, health classes and meal delivery services.
