"Right At Home provided transportation to a medical procedure. Because of COVID, I was having difficulty finding someone. Dustin was very helpful making the arrangements. Deanna arrived on time, stayed on site during the procedure, then drove me home. The entire experience was very positive and I would recommend Right At Home to my family and friends. "

"I needed help with my 98 year old mother who lives with me. My doctor suggested Home Instead, as she had prior contact with the company. Well, she was right, I have been so pleased with staff and how accommodating and responsive they are. My caregiver Nicole is wonderful, she is professional, kind and goes above and beyond completing requested task. She also does many things around the home that I did not request. Who does that? My mother can be difficult but she is so patient with her and lets things flow off. She knows how far to push her and when to let her rest. My mom has said many times how professions she is. Home Instead has made it possible for my mom to stay in my home and supply the additional care that I am unable to do. I highly recommend them."

"My father, in his early nineties, gradually required more and more care due to increasing physical limitations and dementia over the past two years. Prior to Home Instead, he had "fired" several other services, Home Instead survived due to their accommodation and gentle persistence. During the last three months, he required 24 hour care and they, as a team, stepped up and provided the care that he needed. Several of the care-givers came to understand him well, in spite of his difficult moments, and were an essential comfort to him in his last days; which he was able to spend at home due to their care and diligence. Home Instead's staff and supervisors were generally pro-active in anticipating needs and made good suggestions for resolving issues as they appeared. During extra-ordinary circumstances they went well beyond what could have been expected, and it was correspondingly very much appreciated. I can recommend them highly and without reservation."

"My sister has Alzheimer's and needed care but we really wanted her to be in her own home. The care givers that Tanglewood Home Care provided were heaven sent. My sister was treated and cared for with love and respect. Tanglewood met every need we requested of them and went above and beyond. They took her shopping, prepared meals, cleaned her house and most importantly helped her maintain a sense of independence. We could not have imagined a staff that would be more perfect for our sister! "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Howell:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Howell Senior Center | (517) 546-0693 | 1661 N. Latson Rd. Howell, MI 48843 | Operated by the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority, this social hub for seniors organizes and administers a wide array of fitness and education programs. Activities include book discussion clubs, knitting groups, live music performances and low-impact intramural sports such as pickleball. The center’s programming is open to adults ages 50 and up. |
| Area Agency on Aging 1-B | (800) 852-7795 | 29100 Northwestern Hwy., Suite 400, Southfield, MI 48034 | Covering residents of Livingston and five other Michigan counties, this nonprofit organization supports seniors by providing access to services that can help them delay or avoid moving into a nursing home or assisted living facility. The AAA 1-B runs meal delivery and community dining programs, in addition to an ombudsman program that helps seniors who have concerns about the quality of their home care. |
| MyRide2 | (855) 697-4332 | 29100 Northwestern Hwy., Suite 400, Southfield, MI 48034 | Part of the AAA 1-B’s senior-related offerings, the myride2 service focuses on connecting seniors with low-cost curb-to-curb transportation options for safe travel. In addition to its concierge services, myride2 staff provides educational seminars that help teach seniors how to use public transportation and a counseling service for seniors deciding to cease driving independently. There is no cost for the myride2 service itself, but third-party transportation services may charge users a fee. |
| Livingston County Catholic Charities | (517) 545-5944 | 2020 E. Grand River, Suite #104, Howell, MI 48843 | This faith-based organization’s Community Liaison program offers area seniors help with locating legal services, financial support, low-cost home repair, elder-focused psychological counseling and assistance with paying for prescription drugs, among other common needs. As Certified Medicare & Medicaid Assistance Program counselors, the LCCC’s specialists can also help seniors understand and apply for related benefits. |
| Community Mental Health Services of Livingston County | (517) 404-0614 | 2280 E. Grand River, Howell, MI 48843 | The CMHSLC offers home-based emotional and physical support services to Howell seniors through its Senior Reach program. The program focuses on helping withdrawn or disoriented elderly adults access help before a crisis occurs. Specialists can also intervene to help seniors who are at risk of misusing prescription drugs. Concerned third parties may request Senior Reach’s free services on a senior’s behalf, but such services are contingent on the senior’s consent and cooperation. |
