Located one hour northwest of Detroit, Fenton is one of Michigan’s two municipalities that stretches into three different counties, with the majority of its 11,403 residents living in Genesee County. Fenton is home to around 1,995 seniors over the age of 65, who represent 17.5% of the town’s population.

Despite its small population, Fenton offers a wide range of interesting activities for seniors. Southern Lakes Parks and Recreation hosts senior-friendly yoga, aquatics and self-defense classes, and Senior Fridays at the Fenton Community & Cultural Center brings the town’s older adults together each week for card games and social events. At Seven Lakes State Park, seniors can go camping and fishing, and the nearby nature preserve Dauner Martin has miles of peaceful walking trails to explore. Between the town’s orchestra, Fenton Village Players community theater and monthly independent film screenings, Fenton offers an abundance of opportunities to appreciate the arts.

On average, Fenton’s seniors spend the same amount on in-home care and home health care, $4,576 a month. Nationwide, seniors typically spend $95 less for in-home care, while their home health care spending is identical to Fenton’s.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Fenton, so data for the closest city, Flint, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Fenton area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Fenton Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Fenton:

Home Delivered Meal Program

Address: 225 E. Fifth Street Suite 200, Flint, MI 48502
Phone Number: (810) 239-7671

Managed by the Valley Area Agency on Aging, the Home Delivered Meal Program provides homebound seniors with nutritious hot and cold meals daily. To qualify, seniors must be at least 60 years of age, lack the ability to prepare their own meals and have no adult available to cook for them. A $2.00 donation is suggested but not required.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 2727 Lippincott Blvd., Flint, MI 48507
Phone Number: (810) 787-0199

The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low-income seniors save money on their utilities by improving the energy efficiency of their homes. Installing CFL light bulbs, replacing attic and sidewall installation, and repairing windows, doors and furnaces are some of the services the program provides. Most funding comes from the U.S. Department of Energy, and the work is completed through contractors chosen by the Genesee County Community Action Network.

Home Help Services

Address: 125 E Union St, Flint, MI 48502
Phone Number: (810) 760-7300

Medicaid recipients requiring assistance with at least one activity of daily living can receive money directly to pay someone to visit their home and help with a range of tasks including laundry, meal preparation, dressing, grooming, shopping and light housework. The Adult Services Unit of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services manages the program. While providers are not employed by MDHHS, they must be enrolled in the Community Health Automated Medicaid Processing System.

MI Choice Waiver Program

Address: 225 E. Fifth Street Suite 200, Flint, MI 48502
Phone Number: (810) 239-7671

The MI Choice Waiver program is run by the Michigan Medicaid program with services administered through the Valley Area Agency on Aging. Participants receive a variety of in-home services including respite care, private duty nursing, personal emergency response systems and help with chores. Basic Michigan Medicaid services are included as well. To be eligible, seniors must require a nursing facility level of care, be at least 65 years of age, and meet income and asset guidelines.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
