For retirees who are academic enthusiasts or arts and culture lovers, there’s no limit on what to enjoy in Boston. The Athens of America offers spectacular entertainment at the Symphony Hall and other live performance venues at the Boston Theater District, while the Freedom Trail’s historic sites showcase New England’s charm. Seniors can shop, dine and enjoy year-round events at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, take relaxing strolls at Emerald Necklace parks and watch live games featuring teams from the City of Champions. With 11 percent of its residents aged 65 and older, Boston is home to state-of-the-art healthcare facilities including Massachusetts General Hospital and other institutions in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area.

Older adults who wish to call The Walking City home should know that home care in Boston averages $5,434 per month, based on Genworth’s 2019 Cost of Care Survey. Home health care costs slightly higher at $5,482 monthly. These costs make Boston a relatively expensive area compared to the national averages of $4,290 for in-home care and $4,385 for home health care.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Boston area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Boston Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Boston:

Central Boston Elder Services

Address: 2315 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02119
Phone: (617) 277-7416

This non-profit organization provides a comprehensive range of home care programs and other supportive services for Greater Boston seniors and disabled residents. In addition to in-home care, CBES offers the following services at little or no cost based on eligibility:

  • Home-delivered meals
  • Minor home adjustments for improved safety and accessibility
  • Transition coordination for nursing home residents returning to their communities
  • One-time financial assistance to cover vital expenses
  • Elderly housing
  • Elder protective services

Age Strong Commission

Address: 1 City Hall Square, Room 271, Boston, MA 02201
Phone: (617) 635-4599

This department of the City of Boston offers senior programs and resources to help make life easier for aging Bostonians. Some of the services offered are:

The Boston Home Center

Address: 26 Court Street, 9th Floor, Boston, MA 02108
Phone: (617) 635-4663

This division of the Department of Neighborhood Development has dedicated programs for senior homeowners. The Senior Home Repair program offers deferred home improvement loans at zero-percent interest, while the Senior Save program facilitates the necessary replacement of faulty heating systems. Eligibility for these programs is based on household income, the status of property tax and water utility bills payments, and the requirement that the seniors own and live in their homes in Boston.

Brown Bag Program

Address: 70 South Bay Avenue, Boston, MA 02118
Phone: (617) 427-5200

This senior program by the Greater Boston Food Bank delivers free supplemental groceries monthly to elderly residents in need. It operates at multiple distribution sites, particularly senior and community centers, with the help of the staff and volunteers. A typical grocery bag weighs about 15 lbs. and consists of nutritious food items such as dairy, grains, fruits and vegetables to support the health of its recipients.

ABCD Fuel Assistance Program

Address: 178 Tremont Street, 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02111
Phone: (617) 348-6000

This program by the Action for Boston Community Development provides payment assistance on winter heating bills from November to April, following the federal guidelines for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program). Seniors who are eligible for LIHEAP are low-income homeowners and renters living in non-subsidized housing and have a gross family income below 60% of the Massachusetts median.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
