Located just north of Boston and considered part of the metro area, Malden, Massachusetts, is a popular place for retirees, as 12.2% of the population is aged 65 and older. Malden is close enough to Boston proper to allow easy access to the city’s transportation, medical care and other services, something that may appeal to many seniors. The coast of Massachusetts is a beautiful place to explore, and places like the Boston Harbor Islands National Park have plenty of accessible sightseeing points where seniors can take visiting family and friends.

Many Malden seniors prefer to stay in their own homes as they age, and with a little extra help from a home health care aide or assistance with chores and shopping, they may be able to. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019, seniors in Malden can expect to pay around $5,500 per month for care. Homemaker services in Malden average about a dollar per hour higher than the rest of the state, at $28.50 compared to $27.20. In-home medical care runs about the same, $28.75 in Malden and $27.50 in the rest of the state.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Malden, so data for the closest city, Boston, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Malden area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Malden Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Malden:

Mystic Valley Elder Services

Address: 300 Commercial Street, #19, Malden, MA 02148
Phone:  (781) 324-7705

This is a nonprofit agency that works with senior citizens to help them apply for support and health care services in the community they may be eligible for. In addition to physical care for seniors, Mystic Valley also helps reduce the isolation that many elderly people experience by connecting them to volunteer opportunities and social programs. For those who need it, there is also housing placement assistance available.

Meals on Wheels & Senior Dining

Address: 300 Commercial Street, #19, Malden, MA 02148
Phone:  (781) 324-7705

Mystic Valley Elder Services runs 14 different food pantries in the Malden area for seniors in need, as well as programs to educate the elderly on proper nutrition. Meals on Wheels programs include home delivery of Ensure and other nutritional supplements. There are senior dining opportunities at local community centers free for the elderly, although a small donation is suggested. Eligibility for each program is determined by an MVES case manager.

Boston ABCD

Address: 18 Dartmouth Street, Malden, MA 02148
Phone:  (781) 322-6284

Seniors who qualify for the Boston ABCD Fuel Assistance Program may also qualify for free weatherization of their homes, including replacing or adding insulation and installing draft protection seals along with windows and doors. Each project is overseen by a professional contractor and is based on income guidelines. To qualify, families must have an income at or below 60% of the Massachusetts median income.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Address:  One South Station, Boston, MA 02110
Phone:  (617) 737-2836

LIHEAP helps low-income seniors in the Malden area cover the cost of heating and utility bills during the winter season. This is a program based on income, and first-time applicants must apply in person. Seniors receiving Social Security Income may automatically be eligible.

Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund

Address: 107 Ridge Avenue, Athol, MA 01331
Phone: 339-502-5900

Sponsored by the Salvation Army, the GNEF offers seniors in the Boston area with help paying for energy bills (gas, oil, heating, and electric). If an individual doesn’t qualify for the LIHEAP, this community outreach program may be able to help. This program has an income-based eligibility guideline; applicants must have a gross income between 60% and 80% of the state’s median income level.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
