Financial Assistance for Home Care in Malden, MA

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Malden Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Malden:

Mystic Valley Elder Services

Address: 300 Commercial Street, #19, Malden, MA 02148
Phone:  (781) 324-7705

This is a nonprofit agency that works with senior citizens to help them apply for support and health care services in the community they may be eligible for. In addition to physical care for seniors, Mystic Valley also helps reduce the isolation that many elderly people experience by connecting them to volunteer opportunities and social programs. For those who need it, there is also housing placement assistance available.

Meals on Wheels & Senior Dining

Phone:  (781) 324-7705

Mystic Valley Elder Services runs 14 different food pantries in the Malden area for seniors in need, as well as programs to educate the elderly on proper nutrition. Meals on Wheels programs include home delivery of Ensure and other nutritional supplements. There are senior dining opportunities at local community centers free for the elderly, although a small donation is suggested. Eligibility for each program is determined by an MVES case manager.

Boston ABCD

Address: 18 Dartmouth Street, Malden, MA 02148
Phone:  (781) 322-6284

Seniors who qualify for the Boston ABCD Fuel Assistance Program may also qualify for free weatherization of their homes, including replacing or adding insulation and installing draft protection seals along with windows and doors. Each project is overseen by a professional contractor and is based on income guidelines. To qualify, families must have an income at or below 60% of the Massachusetts median income.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Address:  One South Station, Boston, MA 02110
Phone:  (617) 737-2836

LIHEAP helps low-income seniors in the Malden area cover the cost of heating and utility bills during the winter season. This is a program based on income, and first-time applicants must apply in person. Seniors receiving Social Security Income may automatically be eligible.

Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund

Address: 107 Ridge Avenue, Athol, MA 01331
Phone: 339-502-5900

Sponsored by the Salvation Army, the GNEF offers seniors in the Boston area with help paying for energy bills (gas, oil, heating, and electric). If an individual doesn’t qualify for the LIHEAP, this community outreach program may be able to help. This program has an income-based eligibility guideline; applicants must have a gross income between 60% and 80% of the state’s median income level.
